Samaneri Jayasāra - Wisdom of the Masters

Samaneri Jayasāra - Wisdom of the Masters

Жыл бұрын

A selection of profound, direct pointers for meditation by Master Hongzhi on the nature of the mind taken from various texts.
Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091-1157) was one of the most accomplished Chan masters of the Song dynasty who authored or compiled several influential texts. Hongzhi's conception of silent illumination is of particular importance to the Chinese Caodong Chan and Japanese Sōtō Zen schools. Hongzhi's distinctive teachings are well illustrated in the poetic practice instructions he left behind and are beautiful lyrical celebrations of our Buddha Nature and of all existence. However, they are not merely celebrations, but practice instructions and descriptions of meditative experience.
Music: Time for Peace - "One (Part 1)" - with deepest thanks to Swami Madhuram Puri for his kind offering of this exquisite music for this channel.

"Through concealment thins are ever more manifest". Dear Samaneri if you happen to read this and find the space could you expound on this? Or if anyone else has some thoughts that they want to share 🙏🏼 Thank you so much for reading this to us. It is truly transformative, a real inner journey to listen to this poetic piece 🪷

Hi Juliette, this beautiful pointing and reflection: "Through concealment they (things) are ever more manifest". speaks to me of the power and all-pervading presence of the unborn, unmanifest Reality. Although the Absolute is not a 'thing' or phenomenon; nor something that one can see, hear, smell, think about, taste, etc. or 'know' (in the normal sense of that word), it is the very ground of being from which all manifest existence arises and ceases. Without this background, substratum, or Ultimate Reality, nothing could be perceived or experienced. The appearances and forms of all things arise from that which is (and will always be) concealed. I often like to reflect on the mystery of gazing at the stars on a clear night and recognizing the vast space in which they are contained and shine. Without the empty space, nothing is possible - the stars and planets could not exist. The dark, empty background is the screen onto which everything can be seen, heard, known, etc.. When we place our attention more on the reality of the space, darkness, emptiness, silence (however you wish to call it), rather than fixating on the objects and their apparent 'separateness', it takes us back to this abiding, peaceful, and all-pervading spaciousness. The fabric of the Universe. When we recognise that this is our very Essence, our True Nature; and it contains the conditioned perception of "us" as a separate personality, we have arrived back home and all confusion and striving ceases. The entire verse provides the deeper context for this: Through darkness things are bright and Through concealment they are ever more manifest - A crane dreaming in the winter mist, Autumnal waters, sounding from afar. The poetic stirrings offered by this wonderful Master - the mist laden scene with a dreaming crane, the far off sounds of the autumnal waters - point to beauty and wonder of nature (the manifest) forever held within the vast, unknown, unmanifest mystery of Reality. "Through concealment they are ever more manifest." We also recognise the essential emptiness, fleeting nature, and rainbow like appearance of all manifest appearances, held by this unchanging, unmanifest background. Hope some of my musings are of help. 🌈

"When we listen to music, we can notice how there’s a quality of spaciousness between each note. There’s a gap between each note where there’s no sound at all. And if we pay attention to that gap, we can notice how there’s a quality of stillness, of peacefulness, of clarity in that gap. And that gap is not separate from the note; it’s part of the note. It’s part of the music." Ajahn Amaro When you sit down at the piano, what are you thinking about? Probably the notes, right? As well you should. Yes, we need to play notes. But equally (or maybe, more) important is the space in between the notes.
