Hard to say which of the two variants I like better. The poisoned pawn not being able to capture could lead to some really fun bluffs, but also gives a lot of information away. Love the variant though, it was very tense. Your move with that C pawn was amazing and I'm surprised Levy picked up on it.

33:08 was a brilliant move, Eric guessed right that the c pawn was Levy poison pawn and the only reason for Levy to not take this pawn was if the c pawn was Levy's poison pawn. Eric could know almost for sure the c pawn is Levy's poison pawn but Levy couldn't know if eric fake it. Impressive stuff!

I agree that it was smart by Eric, but wasn't it actually a bad move? if Levy had captured with the queen (which would have been the logical continuation after he figured out Eric's plan) Eric would have been unable to re-capture with his pawn, so he would have just lost a bishop...

@@dominiks5068 This whole variant is about taking risks, Qxd6 even that it was good if you know Eric's poison pawn is very risky because Eric's move didn't say for sure that the c pawn is poison but it made Levy to show if it was is poison pawn almost for sure.

@@hamerheads12 Dont think Levy was fully convinced that they both had the C pawns as the poisoned pawns. Eric could have hung his bishop just to confuse Levy, but Levy hanging his Queen in a similar way is much riskier if Eric's C was not actually poisoned.

@@abdullahimran4624 i sometimes cant figure out if hes genuine or not. He doesnt have a monotone voice but his reactions are so dry. But if hes actually surprised, he'd say "DAH" but i think he'll catch on that the phrase is one of his tell of being genuine and finds a way to fake it

This is such a cool variant. As an avid board- & card-game player I'm a big fan of hidden information and the psychology of play that come from it. I will be playing this with my friends (writing the poison pawn on a slip of paper)

@@musickaraoke7853 Samay clarifying that the variant allows poison pawns to actually capture pieces to chat due to the chat being confused. Eric had just taken Levy's E pawn with his own F (poisoned) pawn. Under previous variant rules that would have been an automatic loss for Eric which is what the chat was confused about .. but not in the game they were playing. But having to clarify that meant that obviously Eric's F pawn was the poisoned pawn as only then that clarification would be needed.

poisoned pawn wins it for me ,, since it is a new variant people have not used it effectively to bluff ,,, for ex advancing multiple pawns and keep them guessing ,, however out of all the poisoned pawn games that i have seen eric vs levy was th ebest ,,, what a great move by eric to take the pawn on d6

I think a good strategy for this variant at some point in the middlegame is to just push the poisoned pawn as far as possible (especially if you can stop it from getting locked). Imagine getting a pawn to the 6th or 7th rank without any responsibility to defend it, and the opponent must blockade it to prevent it from promoting. Also I prefer the variant where poisoned pawns cant capture - because it makes it possible to get information without putting the entire game on the line (for instance, if you think one of the pawns is poisoned, you can try moving a minor piece in front of it to see if it will capture)

I like inventing new types of chess. I have done quite a few, and I am always looking for new ideas on foruns or other creators (One example, V.R. Parton, for those who are interested) My honest opinion, I thought the poisoned pawn is too strong. He can take over the board singlehandly and there is not much of a counterplay. My suggestion would be to make, whenever a piece captures the poisoned pawn, both automatically disappear. You are only losing one piece, at tops, not the entire game

@@kpradheep8868 Yeah, but if a poised pawn takes the opponent's poisoned pawn, that player wins. So Eric taking the queen with his poison pawn and levy taking back would have meant an instant win for Levy. The reason Levy didn't do this was because of the risk that Eric was bluffing. Had that not actually been Eric's poisoned pawn Levy would have just lost his queen.

Edit: Even though Polish and Russian share a larger degree of similarity than other languages due to them belonging to the Slavic family, I think "psychological" would sound approximately the same in most of the Indo-European languages, since they heavily borrow scientific terminology from Greek language.

Brilliant idea. It kinda adds a little Stratego to the game. The only downside is that if they choose pawns at opposite corners of the board, then there's no chance at all that one poison-pawn will capture the other. Then again, I've watched only 4 minutes of this video. Maybe there's a detail I'm missing.
