Samba-Cup, 2023. F5J RC Glider competition. Czech Republic

The Samba Cup is the premier F5J contest on the planet! Every F5J enthusiast should try to attend at least one time in their lives! Held near the town of Litomyšl in the Czech Republic.
This year I was able to drag two other American pilots along with me. We had the most amazing time!

Watching this makes me want to break out my old Dodgson Windsong, but the FAA has killed RC soaring here in the states with the altitude cap.. Looks like fun and great looking field...

Awesome video as always Ali. So good to see soaring healthy and alive somewhere. Here in Canada it is all but dead because of the new restrictions. Not to mention where I live in NS, we aren't allowed to fly at all due to the wildfires. Did you notice many differences in "flying style/culture" between your usual west coast and the European crews? Any weird techniques that were new to you or other notable differences?

These are not motored correct? When they launch, it sounds like motors. EDIT. I definitely hear motors.... are they allowed a certain altitude and then motors off or so much time to use motors? The batteries must be tiny? I can't see them on the models. Great content, I'm glad you posted this!! Can anyone explain the rules? It's very cool! I don't hear Varios ....not allowed? I fly RC and this looks way awesome! Thanks again!

For sure. Learn how to fly on a simulator first if you don't know how.

@@lambda3374 I guess I meant to say that F5J models are very easy to fly. These contests are not so much about flying as they are about thermals and timing. So if you know how to fly RC models you will not have any problems flying a F5J model. You will have problems finding thermals! That is a totally different skill that needs a lot of practice! haha
