Some unfinished business in a rough gully in alpine Victoria brought myself and Dylan Smith (‪@thewilderlifer9910‬ ) down south for a backpack hunt. Having recently worked on my rifle for increased accuracy, a cross gully shot was on the cards. The carry out was full on and our good times were natural.

Good hunting mate well done. Also, that is a Red Belly Black snake. Tigers, copperheads and RRBs dont mind the cold so youll see them out even in low temperatures. They usually sit close to their borrows trying to get some sunshine or they gotten hungry.

That snake encounter has freaked me out. I nearly trod on two exactly like this in late march and assumed they were Copperheads. Now after watching a few vids on highland Copperheads it seems they'll still have the pale under belly even if they are jet black. It seems all black is most likely a Tiger and the way its posturing probably confirms that yeah? Gaiters all year 'round then!

Interesting video fellas - how big was his head gear? Head shape says its a garden variety, adult female red-belly black snake. Very dark because it's the middle of winter. Many years ago I saw an eastern brown snake in Sofala active late arvo in the middle of July - it was barely 5 degrees. Snakes never cease to surprise, but you were in no danger - just don't pick her up & you're golden. Those mongrel dogs are fearless and WAY more of a danger !

Thanks mate, there’s no doubt that controlled aging can be beneficial to making meat tender, so much of it comes down to the individual animal and its condition at the time too.

If off the beaten track you have good chances of getting one or at least seeing one or more because you can see them or signs of them closer to suburbia 1 hr out of the Melbourne CBD to the north in the King Lake Region & many people are lazy & after learning this don't put in much planning or effort . Not saying they have a lot of success but that's what lack effort gets you

Cheers mate, it’s all a temperature thing. If it’s going down to 5degs at night it’s going to be fine. But getting the cape into a freezer as soon as possible is far more important than fleshing everything or salting it

Its the dingo issue that makes it complicated, arguments are being made that in the high country, wild dogs have been there for almost 6000 years now, more than enough time to acclimatise and be part of the environment. Near farms though they're extremely dangerous to livestock. Its hard to differentiate between dogs gone feral and wild dingo as well down that so much interbreeding happens

@@06hunter54I’m a snake catcher in the alpine high country. Catch these quite often. It’s a tiger snake. Have done multiple scale counts to confirm. I’ve never seen an all black rbbs, I’ve caught hundreds of snakes in this area. They sure looks similar but we get 3 different coloured tigers around here. One of which is all black. No colour at all. Obviously I can’t count scales on the video, but in this region I’d be 99.99% sure it’s a tiger. Either way, good to see it out and looking well fed.

The snake looks like what we used to call a mountain tiger snake they are black but if get up very close you will see the stripes all be it very faint.

Yea personally I run an aldi special, but if I had a nice scope nice binos I'd want the glass and accuracy of my rangefinder to match the performance of the rest of my kit. Like u say each to their own I'm not running out to buy one, that's not to say I never would though. Great the company is supporting those who support us hunters though.
