IM SO EXCITED TO WATCH THIS MY ULT GROUP! i already know your "hot take" is gonna be leo scream belting 😭 edit: thank you so much for your kind words about everyone's vocals!!! especially hyuk!!! when they first debuted he literally had ZERO lines and now he has his own mini album and composes his own songs. his vocal tone is so unique and i love him!! also i've always had leo as #1 in my list solely because of his vocal colors (and because hes a baby) but your vid made me appreciate jaehwan (ken) much more than i did!!! i saw ravi live last year at his solo concert and he sounds exactly the same in person which is crazy,, he even sang like one line in this really light airy tone that was beautiful. i love him. vixx have the most amazing and varied vocal colors and they will forever be my favorite group thank you for talking about them!!!!!

THE WAY I GASPED WHEN LEO WAS THIRD AND NOT SECOND! you should check out some of his musicals! when he’s singing live at his musicals he weirdly sings with more “support” and is less breathy and airy but he never sings like that during vixx songs. i’ve always thought about how amazing he would be if jellyfish had vocal coaching as good as sm did, as they definitely emphasize the importance of support

I really didn't expect that top 3 ranking!! But even though I love Leo's voice, I'm so happy that you recognise N's abilities, he has my fave vocals in VIXX and he's usually underrated. Oh and yes... Ken is a gem!, one of the best vocalist in kpop I'm not even being bias here (the sad thing is hes enlisting in a few days 😭😭😭)

I've been waiting for this the entire day!!!! Omg the way my jaw dropped when leo was at no.3 (literally have never seen anyone do it) and N at no.2! But I highly agree with everything you say! N is my fav voice in vixx and I absolutely love his tone (his voice tends to get overlooked coz he's such a great damn dancer, what can this man not do???) AND YOU FANBOYING OVER KEN IS EVERYTHING! I think you may already know, but some of the members have also started in musicals. Ken's voice for me represents the word "dramatic" this man is absolutely insane, the power, emotion and control he can present is just off the charts!

I'm actually crying tears of joy right now. Hongbin has been my ultimate bias for years now and he's always forgotten about or people say he's not talented and it always really hurts. I acknowledge everything you said about his voice and I do love the hyper nasal thing he does in vixx songs I think it's really charming and I'm biased as hell. But I'm no vocal expert so I hope it's not damaging his voice or anything. But all the compliments you gave him and his voice made me so incredibly happy and I can't thank you enough for recognizing my boy's talent that is usually ignored.

This is a very good ranking, yet again! As someone who has followed Vixx for a while now, Hyuk's improvement is absolutely insane. He went from 1 line during their debut era to having solo vocal projects by 2018 and beyond. Overall, Vixx is such a skilled group, and I'm so glad you got to hear them (especially vocal god Ken)

I am still watching it because while I don't really know them (I listen to them casually but I don't really know their names), it's always fun listening to your analysis! I also have a request for a later video, if they are not on your list yet: X1. Yes, they already disbanded, and yes, they are slowly and surely re-debuting in their own groups (old or new) or as soloists, but I would love to hear your opinion of them all together, if it's possible! I think it would be interesting. (Also I miss them a lot.)

I love Ravi and his singing style. He's a super talented guy. When talking about Leo 3rd place, don't worry starlights (Vixx's fans) wouldn't attack. They are a very chill fandom. Thank you so so so much for reacting to VIXX. They are a very special group to me. They seriously deserve more attention. I love that they are really invested in their concepts every time they have a comeback, seriously they are so commited to it. Also they are all such good singers and performers (Ravi is actually one of my favourite rappers ever). I feel so bad for kind of neglecting N and Hyuk's voices when i first got into VIXX. It probably took me a year until i started appreciating their voices more and more. Now they have all of my love and respect. While i love all of their voices i understand completely why you ranked Ken as number one. Serioisly every time i listen to him sing aaaahhhh i can't explain it. His voice can be very piercing and kind of almost like a laser beam (i can't explain it in other words), but he can also be quiet and emotional. I can tell he is confident in his singing abilities, cuz he seems very comfortable singing live, but his attitude is also kind of humble. Whenever he sings duets, despite his impressive abilities, he doesn't try to outsing or outshine the other singer, he always gives them the space to shine, and have their moment to shine, not trying to compete with them (cuz honestly in duets that happens and i am not that big of a fan of the tention it creates between the artists and if not used skillfully it can ruin the atmosphere). What i am trying to say is he is such a gentleman when performing with other artists. Thank you once again for taking the time and effort to make this video

I’m a baby Starlight just became a fan in 2023 (I hate myself for being this late). But I’m not a Kpop fan, I actually swore that I would never like Kpop, and in fact I’m still not a kpop fan but a VIXX fan. I loved everything about them, their songs, their concepts, their voices. And I just absolutely fell in love with Ken’s voice, is just breathtaking. I am amazed how low and how high he can sing, his range is impressive. I agree with everything you said. As a Musical theater fan, It was not surprised at all when I read that he have been the main role in many musicals. He’s by far one of the best voices I have ever heard.

The biggest reason I have been yelling about wanting a vixx analysis several times (on my other account, but anyway) is because I wanted to see your take on Leo. I do absolutely adore him and his voice, but as someone with absolutely no actual knowledge about voices, music etc. i wanted to see what you thought. I have seen people both calling him a vocal god, but also seen the complete opposite, where he is getting called the worst main vocalist of kpop. But, I just wanted to see another take on this, especially from you since you always explain your opinions/reasons so well! I was also very curious what you would say about Hakyeon, as he in my opinion has a very unique voice. I really love the more emotional voices, and his just does something beautiful I can't explain. But I have no idea to explain stuff like that and I was curious to learn more about how he actually is as a vocalist. Thank you so much for doing the vocal ranking!

I also want to say that people have really been underestimating VIXX's vocals for such a long time. It's like discourse always revolves around whether Leo is an amazing singer or not, when in truth, they are all great. There's more to their vocals that Leo's insane high notes, hope people will realise that.

I immediately dropped everything to watch this, omg, I've been waiting for this for weeks and it did not disappoint! I'm so happy you seemed to enjoy what you heard of our boys, and that they were even able to pleasantly surprise you in some instances. ^^ You didn't talk a lot about their harmonies, though, which surprised me a little since I half expected you'd bring it up at least in passing. Personally, their harmonies are one of the things I think they excel at as a group, and aren't something I see a whole lot of other groups doing quite to that extent (their acoustic medley of Chained Up, Dynamite, and Error comes to mind). Basically, the way their voices sound as a *group* is one of my favorite things about them, they all complement each other so well in their music. :( Yeah, he's not perfect, but no one who can hit the kind of notes he's hit for the past 7 years is a bad singer. As some others have said, he also uses different vocal technique in the musicals he appears in, so I don't think it's that he CAN'T use different vocal techniques, it's that he's trying for a very specific sound in VIXX's music that he can't get any other way. He also has an incredibly soft and quiet (and frankly very adorable) natural speaking voice, which I think contributes to why he has to strain a bit more than others to hit those higher notes. Heck, I didn't even think the man could physically YELL until a couple years ago. XD *flails wildly at N getting number 2* Okay, listen, LISTEN. N is my ult Kpop bias, and his vocal timbre is probably in my personal top 5 in all of Kpop, so I'm SUPER STOKED that you decided to place him at number 2 and you had so many nice things to say about his singing! Especially calling him "by far" the best at using light and breathy vocal techniques out of everyone else in every other group you've covered so far, fjdfjadklfjkladjfd A TRUE INTELLECTUAL, WE STAN. (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ I think we can all agree that you would have had to hand in your vocal street cred card if you DIDN'T put Ken at number 1, honestly. :P Your unabashed fanboying over him made my chest swell with secondhand pride, ngl. XD I love seeing our cutie main vocal get the praise and recognition he so rightly deserves for his powerhouse vocals, it doesn't happen nearly enough, imho. He's really one of the "forgotten great vocalists" of Kpop, and it's a crying shame people don't really talk about the sheer amount of hard work and talent that man possesses more often. Thank you again for checking VIXX out and saying such nice things about their vocal talents. ^^ I definitely look forward to what you have to say about the soloists you plan to cover. If I may make one suggestion, check Sandeul out if you haven't already. He's from the 2011 group B1A4 (would recommend taking a look at them as a whole if you have time for it, they've got some great bops, and WM artists tend to be really talented singers in general), but he's also a soloist, and he is widely considered one of THE best vocalists in Kpop, period. He and Ken are best friends and it's very easy to see why. Birds of a feather and all that. ;P (They're also in a chat with Mamamoo's Moonbyul, EXID's Hani, and BTS' Jin, 92 line 5ever.

Ah, Leo is my baby but I have to agree with your words. Unfortunately Jellyfish probably doesn't put emphasis on vocal training as much as SM Entertainment does. But I feel Leo would benefit from it so much because he does have a beautiful voice. But thank you for doing this ranking. I appreciate your positive, yet informed way of ranking them. ^^ They are an underrated group in my opinion, especially with Ken's incredible vocals and the overall mix of everyone's singing/rapping/dancing abilities.

i love that no one is surprised by the 'hot take' don't worry no one is going to jump you. (while i am in noooo way an expert or even slightly educated on vocals) i do think leo seems to have improved a bit over the last few years, as he does more and more musicals. I don't know why he's never brought that back to vixx, but I guess his voice is part of what vixx is known for, so maybe he/jellyfish don't want to change that. also i think that the reason he doesn't have much going on in the lower range is that even his speaking voice is soft, airy and high OR loud and high. nothing about leo's voice is deep.

thanks for uploading this!! vixx is such an underrated group imo and their vocals are all so good. in the future i'd love to see a vocal ranking of a band called the rose!! since only 2 of them really sing (1 of them sometimes sings), i think the ranking is pretty predictable but it'd be really cool to hear your opinions on their voices, especially the main vocalist woosung (aka sammy) because his voice is super unique! maybe you could do a ranking of loona sometime too although they have 12 members so it'd probably be pretty difficult

I’m really really thankful to you because i’m learning music for 7 years and VIXX was a turning point for my researchs. I’m really blessed to find VIXX because they’re full package of vocal. I have a long definition for VIXX but i’d like to say something about these incredible main vocalist. The most special thing in leo’s voice is he never runs out of breath. His vocal range is absolutely not that much wide but his breathing control ability is incredible. Ken is complete different from leo because ken’s talking voice is so deep but when he sings, from very low note to higher notes he touches it without getting tired. He’s little bit lack with breathing control but he put unbelievable variations to blend his voice with melody. It brings a heavenly feeling. You’re extremely correct with this rankings and also thank you for finding that true glamour of hakyeon’ s voice too. Thank you so much💙

They’re not exactly known for their vocals, but their main vocalist is wonderful. I'm all about this! One of the reason VIXX is my 2nd ult is that I LOVE the variety and color in their voices. Very interesting to hear them analyzed like this, thank you very much! I'd be very interested to hear what you'd do about one of the WM groups! That's B1A4, Oh My Girl, and ONF. They're my favorites, and I honestly love their vocalists--WM as a company seems to really like 'natural'-sounding kids, there's a lot of variety in voice types. ALSO, they don't have as strict (silly, if you ask me) requirements as far as appearance compared to some companies, so they get a lot of extremely talented kids that otherwise got overlooked because they weren't supermodels--so, for example, B1A4's Sandeul and OMG's Seunghee were already very skilled and trained vocalists before ever joining the company. ^^ (for Sandeul, you can find MANY performances whether on King of Mask Singer, Immortal Songs, Duet Song Festival, and even their concerts: here is a good intro, it's an old vid but it shows his progression from being already good at debut [19 years old!] to three years later kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2q1aomwnLtjec0)

I was guessing correctly with you till number 2 xD cuz u could go either way, I've seen composers/trainers who favored number 2 the most! personally, Ken is my favorite vocalist but Leo is my favorite in terms of musicality! It saddens me as a fan seeing Ken stuck with ballad solo career, since ballads bore me to death and they don't attract new audience x) but Leo knows well what works for his voice, he's very diverse and attracts people with different tastes due to his broad choice of genres. OmGOSH! I agree with your ranking 100%%%%%! I've been a Starlight since a little after they reached their first year as a group, and I've always ranked them like this. Ravi is an amazing rapper (top 10 imo), and a good singer as well :). Leo has a memorable timbre and can hit insanely high notes (the one in "Chained Up" ALWAYS GETS ME) but his technique is so rough it hurts me to see his live high notes. Hyuk also has a beautiful voice and his solo album slays (it's literally so underrated), but I understand why he didn't get many lines during the first few years of VIXX: He wasn't consistent and didn't have a good grasp of his instrument. Yet, both him and Hongbin practice and bettered their singing techniques so much throughout the years. For their last few comebacks, they finally had the lines they deserved and worked so hard for :). N is such a solid vocalist, he never disappoints, which is why I placed him second as well. And Ken. OMG KEN! He is also in my top 10 favorite idol male vocalists list alongside Baekhyun, Kyuhyun, and more. Every time he sings, I get goosebumps. I can proudly admit I've cried a few times while watching his stages. I just always comeback to his performances, they are jaw dropping and never fail to make my heart skip a beat. I'm so happy you saw him for what he truly is: An amazingly talented singer. Believe it or not, throughout their career together, Ken was always pushed aside to give way for Leo's crazy high notes. People treated Leo as VIXX's true main vocalist, and Ken as just "the other main vocalist." Simply tragic and quite ignorant of their part. Thank your for this video; I can't wait for what you have to say regarding New. He is one of The Boyz's main vocalists, but they don't give him many lines, I don't get why. He only gets the highest of highest notes in their songs (which actually aren't very high) and that's it. Because of that, I can't figure his voice out! Just how talented is he? It's frustrating not to know the full extent of his voice! The closest I got to an answer was during their "Tattoo" era, but it still wasn't enough :/... Or maybe I'm the only one who feels this way....

Vixx is the best group and I'm glad you covered them! Ken is absolutely amazing, have you heard him (and Leo) in their musical performances? I'm sad that Ken isn't higher on my bias list, so I can't fangasm with you, but it's a hard list to rank after all. TBH I thought Leo would be 4th! I love his range and vocal color, his voice was what drew me into Vixx in the first place, but his technique is painful to hear and I cannot condone it. I want to personally fly to SK and give him vocal lessons to end it, because I dread the day when he completely destroys his voice because of his screaming. I think just before he went into the army, he was starting to pull back and improve, but I can't be certain. I just noticed that his belts weren't going as high as they usually do and wonder if that was a conscious choice? Hmm, things to think about. Hyuk and N are amazing vocalists and I'm sad that they don't get as much attention because they don't sing stratosphere notes. But N's control is so impressive, and his tone is so heart melting, I love him so much. And Hyuk too, I'm in love with his voice and so proud of his solo works.

I highly recommend "Memory" by Ravi & Hyuk to see Hyuks vocal power. perfect song also recommend "차가운 밤에" by Leo & Ken. Probably one of the best ballad songs... P.S: Am I the only one missing all songs of Vixx on Spotify?

It's temporarily off Spotify because of the contract issues with CJENM, but it should hopefully get fixed soon. I hope their whole discography can get added since it never was, especially the old Japanese albums which I really like.

Thanks for making this 😀 finally If you was really amazed by Ken's vocals based on these videos, I cant even imagine what ur reaction will be based on his recent vocals. He is really improved so much and this man doesnt need autotune at all 😂 I love his overall vocal instruments. He is my no.1 singer I think Ken loved to use his mixed voice than his upper register and that was really amazed me (Ken be like "why I have to use my upper register if I can use my mixed voice for belting 🤣) His wide vocal range 👏 imagine if he could support overall his vocal range because his dynamics and his musicianship (ad libs & runs) already great. And I noticed his lower registers are stable now (just go check his covers from his channel) Ken is versatile singer, he nailed every genre but I think he loves ballads. Some people disappointed for his genre choice he made for his solo debut. But I think this genre more show his dynamics and vocal abilities than the other genre (musical not included) & he can play with his vocal range. He has many choices actually because his versatility. God blessed you Ken 🤗 I do agree with the ranking except for the hyuk, because he is 3rd to me 😀 he sounds full with his tone producing than Leo (because Leo more light ? His roundness almost absent) Please dont attack me for this guys 🙈 Hyuk maybe not main vocal and barely had line in vixx song (because vixx song damn high) but his singing pretty solid. N as 2nd is my vocal ranking for him too when I found Vixx for the first time on 2019. But seing the improvement of Hyuk now, he can be rank for 2nd too.

I love all your takes here, and it's nice to see someone talk about Vixx vocalists so long after their debut. I really really appreciate your placement of N because so so many people overlook his technique. That being said, I noticed that a lot of the examples you used for Leo were around or before 2016. I'm curious if you looked at more videos around 2018/2019 because I personally think he has improved a lot after 2017. I would recommend finding videos from his Muse concert or anything from his recent musicals. I'm not sure if it would change your ranking, but I'm wondering if your opinions in general would change.

hehe the second you said you have a 'hot take' i knew it was probably going to be abt leo. i think a lot of kpop fans have a misconception that main vocalist=most technically proficient singer which isn't always the case! the main vocalist/member with the most lines is typically a singer who can either a)sing the key the best or b)has a stylistic quality that fits the concept/group's sound the best. all that being said, vixx is such a talented group with great vocalists! i'm so glad you covered them! your tirade on how unfair ken's voice is!?!? soooo relatable haha. i found your channel through a friend on twitter who sent the gidle analysis and have been hooked since! i'm actually kind of surprised at the variance of groups, new and old you cover for this series!! i dont' know if you take suggestions, but if you do here are a few of my recommendations of groups that have not been done in this series: - *exid* (i think they have a unique group of tones and i really want you to discover the vocal goddess of a main vocalist they have!) - *big bang* -ot4 (legendary group! super interesting set of tones amongst them for sure! however this is the one group where it might just be better for you to not include the former member, but maybe run a poll to see how other fans feel i guess) - *sistar* (a group that released the best kpop summer songs imo, and probably the biggest difference between the first vs last position) - *bts* (pleasantly surprised they haven't been covered yet! i'm esp curious abt jungkook's (the main vocalist) technique bc it feels?? like he sings with what most ppl consider 'bad support' ie super breathy, but somehow has such good tuning? i'd love to hear your thoughts on him and the rest of the group!) - *tvxq* -ot5 (another legendary group! they debuted at a time when idol groups were dying out and revived the industry!) anyway, i love your unbiased approach in ranking, love how you're so encouraging and hopeful of improvement for everyone and i like how when you sprinkle in your own opinions, you make it clear why you feel a certain way abt someone's voice! you've definitely earned a subscriber in me. hope you reach 10k soon

I never paid much attention to his actual skill since his voice is so sweet and silky. He really is very good and smart about how he uses his voice too!!

i loved watching this, vixx are one of my absolute favourite vocal groups and it's always really interesting to hear a more professional opinion on my faves! since you mentioned maybe doing videos about solo artists i have to recommend you a singer called gaho. he isn't that well known but i swear he has one of the most beautiful voices ever. also as always i hope one day you can make an ikon video (all seven members please), as well as another recommendation: n.flying. they are a band and some members don't really sing at all but they have this insane main vocal called yoo hweseung and i think you'd love him. (he is a regular on a show called immortal songs, so in theory just to be blessed by his vocals you could look for that. the other members who sing are good too tho, n.flying's just amazing)

I love how detailed and knowledgeable and well-researched this is! I totally understand why you chose to put Leo third based on what you said, but I wonder if you've watched any clips of him singing for musicals? I used to have exactly the problem you have with his scratchy belting, but ever since he started doing musicals his "support" ((ugh)) and the comfort of his belting has improved by LIGHT YEARS. His technique is noticeably healthier, enough to bump him up the rankings (even though N is my favourite idol in the whole universe)

I honestly can't be upset with this ranking. You were right for a good bit of this and so happy about you saying all of their vocals are amazing. Leo is still my favorite for the simple fact that he puts more emotion into everything he sings then Ken does(other than him singing the starlight song and crying during it). I know it's his acting musical abilities or maybe it's b/c he wrote all of his solos but it's just amazing for me to hear emotion coming through that much. *shrug*

Yessss, I'm so happy that there's someone out there who loves Ken's honey vocals as much as I do. 😭❤ There are simply not enough kpop fans that appreciate or talk about his voice. He is honestly one of my top favorite male kpop singers along with Kihyun and Sunggyu and a few others. I absolutely agree with your rankings. I knew right away what your hot take was gonna be about because loads of people are always pretty split about Leo's technique. So, we understand and we won't be going after you for that.
