That was about the most dangerous transmission removal I've seen in many years. Two guys under a 2 tonne car on axle stands heaving on a gearbox. I was just waiting for it to slip the stands and come crashing down...think it can't happen? I've seen more secure axle stand setups slip off under less sideways load than that.

@@Rekt-M8-v4 put the stands under another part that is solid. Frame rails, body mounts. Places like that. What happens is when stands are under springs like they are here. When alot of weight is suddenly removed from car the springs will open a little cause less weight, causing where they are to slant. They can slip out from under control arms because where they were horizontal now weights off they slant. + With enough sideway motion and they can slip out from under car the same way, especially if sway bar is off. Now imagine having both at same time. If I ever have to do that, I leave the jack barely touching a solid place on car. Just in case it does slip the jack will take weight till I can get out from car. Or shove a wheel and rim under the frame of car. Rather dented wheel the smashed head.

I remember reading in the Projekt 928 book, how Porsche developed the torque tube for the 928. They were aiming for a 50/50 weight split (First car in the world to have that) and that meant having a transaxle at the back. They used a Mercedes 500 as the development car, and they tried several different methods of connecting the motor to the gearbox. They had a lot of trouble with harmonic vibrations at certain speeds, and they eliminated these by adding driveshaft bearings at weird distances from each other, to prevent any standing waves developing. I also remember that if you remove the torque tube from a 928, and fail to re-install it correctly, the torque tube can apply forward pressure onto the crankshaft, and it destroys the engine in just a few hundred miles. OOPS.

Awesome ep .. one BIG question Sam, i can’t believe you haven’t installed even the simplest of lifts in that space. An ep on installing something would be awesome and can only imagine what a huge difference to your sanity and body one would have been for this job!

Great video Sam - the prices of those parts is a disgrace !!! At those prices you would think they were made of gold and yet they are nothing special. I'll bet there is an aftermarket upgrade for less !!!!

You can have clutches and pressure plates rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of new aftermarket. As well they can change the friction material to ceramic or organic/ceramic mix. Great option for high end cars

This brought back memories of one of my brothers back in the sixties. We lived on a farm and Lenny was working under his modified car, trying to take out the gear box. We were all called to lunch, and we wondered where Lenny was, so we went back to the car to see his legs sticking out with him calling to us in a muffled voice to get the fucking gearbox off his chest! We thought it was funny, he didn't!

There is no way Aston Martin makes those parts. Sam will find the parts bin that these came out of and buy the whole mess for under $900.00. Doing this job on jack stands is nuts. Why don't you either build a pit, or put in a lift? I grew up on a farm and we had a service pit in the garage. Easy to change the oil or work on stuff standing up not lying under it wondering when a tranny was going to take off your arm.

That’s a Concentric Slave Cylinder! It includes the throw out bearing on it. When you ge the replacement DO NOT compress it before you install it in the car otherwise it will blow out the factory seals and you will have to buy a new one and do the job all over again! I learned that the hard way
