From what I read in the comments, many Muslims find what Shamsi is saying strange. This is because Islam is strange to Muslims who don't learn. Or it could be beside what he's saying is indeed strange and that he's also not a scholar. For example he mentions that tryant Hajjaj, and it's TRUE, the Sahabah would literally pray behind him when he was drunk and would repray their Salah after he left so to avoid causing an issue. However, it's also true that many great Salaf went against the rulers such as Abu Hanifa when he supported rebellion against the Umayyads, Abu Hanifa when he refused to be the Cheif Justice, Iman Malik refusing to be summoned by Harun al Rashid, Imam Ahmad rejecting Mamun due to his aqeedah etc

Sufism is a mysticism. A way of being closer to Allah. It's not separate from Islam. Yes, there are extremes, but as a whole, it's getting closer to Allah. Because of Sufism, we are utilising the concept of Zhikr. Remembrance of Allah. Muslims make up the Ummah. Not countries. If Muslims are not representing Islam properly, then people will judge Islam.

I am not a Sufi. Yet, all (99%) Sufis are Sunni Muslims. They class themselves as Sunni. Sufis believe in Allah, the Quran, Mohammad pbuh, believe in all major Sunni teachings. I do not agree on their zhikr remembrance in the form of whirling. This is extreme. All the rest of their zhikr forms are halal. Nothing wrong with such practices. I visited Konya, a Sufi city in Turkey. Understanding them, made me realise that they have the same Sunni beliefs. Pray 5 times a day, staying away from haram. In fact, I've seen much more honest and loving Muslims in Konya than anywhere else, although I haven't been to Muslim Arab countries. They utilise practices to bring them closer to Allah. Many we all do and agree on. Apart from whirling, I don't see an issue with their zhikr from what I know. Such as nasheeds. Sufis use nasheeds to elevate their love for Allah and Mohammad pbuh. Then there is spoken poetry, poetry in general. I love poetry and it is halal. Poetry is halal, and the most famous Muslim Sunni Sufi poet is Rumi, from Konya. No one can dispute the fact that Sufis are Sunni. No one can state that zhikr in nasheeds and spoken poetry form is haram, poetry is halal and not forbidden. Drinking tea and coffee, in order to stay awake all night for the remembrance of Allah, is what Sufis do. There are even Sufis that are so close to spirituality, they don't swirl, they don't cut themselves. They are simple minded, they become attached to Allah. Imam Al Haddad was a Sufi. Not the swirling Sufi, but the status Sufi is referred to as one that always does zhikr. Such Sufis always zhikr, always write poetry, always read the Quran, always ponder on Allah and creation by Allah. I read a book, "book of assistance" by imam Al Haddad. SubhanAllah may Allah bless this great man. What a simple yet powerful book. I highly recommend it, and I am sure Shamsi would as well.

There is absolutely no difference. The terms are in fact interchangeable. Some also refer to it as tazkiyyah however other scholars have defined Sufism as being a pathway to tazkiyyah ir purification of the soul. Ibn Khadlun writes: This knowledge of Sufism is among the sciences of the revealed law in the religion. Its origins that the way of these people continued with the righteous predecessors of the Ummah and the great ones among the companions, the followers, and those after them. It is the path of truth and guidance, founded upon commitment to worship and dedication to Allah Almighty, turning away from the splendor of the world and its temptations, abstaining from the pleasure, property, and status sought by the masses, and practicing isolation from the creation in seclusion for worship. That was generally practiced among the companions and righteous predecessors. Source: Tārīkh Ibn Khaldūn 1/611 Jalaluddin as-Suyuti (849 - 911 AH.) “At-Tasawwuf in itself is the best and most honourable knowledge. It explains how to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (s) and to put aside innovation.” [Ta’yid al-Haqiqat al-‘Aiiyya,p 57] Ibn Taymiyyah in his compilation of fatwas has a book entitled The Book of Tasawwuf where he speaks of Sufism

@@TheMedicalLad The word Tarīqah linguistically means “manner” or “method” and in reference to the field of Tasawwuf, it refers to a school or order, e.g. the Chishtī Tarīqah, Naqshbandī Tarīqah, Shādhilī Tarīqah etc. Tariqah in relation to Tasawwuf is analogous to the word “madhhab” in relation to the schools of Fiqh. The science of Fiqh concerns itself with the external injunctions and regulations pertaining to things such as salāh, fasting, stealing, interest etc., and the science of Tasawwuf concerns itself with the internal injunctions and regulations pertaining to things such as praiseworthy qualities, e.g. gratefulness, patience, sincerity etc. and reprehensible qualities, e.g. pride, ostentation and greed etc. In essence, the goal of all the Tarīqahs is one and the same, namely to cure spiritual maladies of the heart, elevate the spiritual status and ultimately gain closeness to Allah; the dissimilarities of the various Tarīqahs mainly revolve around the difference of approach towards achieving this objective. Some Tarīqahs implement one set of spiritual exercises whilst other Tarīqahs implement a different set of exercises. Some differences in spiritual exercises stem from the differences of the Madhāhib of the Shuyūkh of each Tarīqah. Considering the fact that the Shuyūkh of Tasawwuf adhere strictly to the letter of the law, each Tarīqah will differ in exercises of dhikr as well. The field of Tasawwuf is usually likened to the field of medicine. Throughout history, man has discovered cures to various physical maladies, so to have the Shuyūkh, the spiritual doctors, discovered cures for spiritual maladies. Some of the practices and cures are mentioned in the Qur’ān, some in the Ahadīth, and others have been discovered through the institution of tajrubah (personal experience). Generation after generation, the Shuyūkh of Tasawwuf have dedicated their lives to this field, therefore, they know the effects of various adhkār upon the heart and soul. To those unfamiliar with Tasawwuf, such exercises may seem extremely peculiar and unusual. It is understandable for people to feel uncomfortable and queasy during their first experience with such exercises. However, to repel this discomfort, one should bear in mind that the Shuyūkh don’t claim that these adhkār and spiritual exercises are new forms of worship where it would be classified as an innovation (bid‘ah) in Dīn. Only those bereft of the understanding of Fiqh and the subtleties of Dīn make such professions. These spiritual prescriptions should be seen and regarded as a form of treatment (tadāwī) for the sicknesses of the heart. Just as the physical body must be put through certain therapeutic exercises for the benefit and rejuvenation of the body, so to do the Shuyūkh put the spiritual patient under various exercises to strengthen and treat the soul. This whirling is often done by the Melevi tariqa. Just because a tariqah exists does not imply that the Sufis accept it. Rather the vast majorty if tariqahs, which they may have been founded by pious persons are agreed upon to be currupted. What is important is that the permissibliy or impermissibiliy of an act depends on the Shariah ruling, if it is against Shariah then it should be against Sufism. No Sufi can be a true sufi unless they first understand fiqh. It is important to bear in mind that unfortunately, there has always existed groups of self-centered, worldly motivated pseudo-Sufis who misrepresented Tasawwuf and used some of the practices of the Sufis, not to mention concocted some of their own, to suit their nafsānī (selfish) desires. Some of them feign being Sufis in order to gain fame and popularity, others to engage in singing and dancing and others to earn money etc. It is from such people that deviances began to crop up in this pristine and praiseworthy science. Examples of their innovations include the Qawāli where singing and music are rampant under the guise of Dhikr, grave-worship where people commit shirk by prostrating to the inmates of the grave, Salāmī where people stand up to offer salutations upon Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه و سلم with the belief that Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه و سلم visits the gathering and other similar practices that have no real connection with Tasawwuf. Because of the existence of such perfidious people and their impermissible practices, it has become a daunting task for sincere people such as you to find a true Shaykh and Tarīqah. Every Tarīqah has these imposters in their midst preying upon the ignorant masses; therefore, one must be cautious as to who one takes as a Murshid (guide).

Imam Abu Hanifa(rh) is known to have said that he preferred the learn the stories of the pious than to learn fiqh. Now, MBS is rejecting the majorty of hadith and wants to only take the muttawatir which at most won't even make up half of Sahih al Bukhari. lbn Qayyim (691 - 751 AH.) “We can witness the greatness of the People of Sufism, in the eyes of the earliest generations of Muslims by what has beenmentioned by Sufyan ath-Thawri (d. 161 AH), one of the greatest imams of the second century and one of the foremost legal scholars. He said, “If it had not been for Abu Hisham as-Sufi (d. 115) 1 would never have perceived the action of the subtlest forms of hypocrisy in the self… Among the best of people is the Sufi learned in jurisprudence.” [Manazil as-Sa’ireen.] Shaykh ibn Taymiyyah has stated “…some people criticised Sufiyya and Tasawwuf and they said they were innovators, out of the Sunnah, but the truth is they are striving in Allah’s obedience [mujtahidin fi ta’at-illahij, as others of Allah’s People strove in Allah’s obedience. So from them you will find the Foremost in Nearness by virtue of his striving [as-saabiq ul-muqarrab bi hasab ijtihadihi]. And some of them are from the People of the Right hand [Ahl al-Yameen mentioned in Qur’an in Sura Waqi’ah], but slower in their progress. … And this is the origin of Tasawwuf. Sufism has nothing to do with dancing, rather if we look at the major works of the major Sufi scholars we don't find this. The majorty of the Ulama of Pakistan (60%) are Hanafi-Deobandi scholars. The Hanafi school prohibits dancing and therefore such actions would be impermissible. This is an extract taken from a fatwa by Mufti Ebrahim Desai: "It is important to bear in mind that unfortunately, there has always existed groups of self-centered, worldly motivated pseudo-Sufis who misrepresented Tasawwuf and used some of the practices of the Sufis, not to mention concocted some of their own, to suit their nafsānī (selfish) desires. Some of them feign being Sufis in order to gain fame and popularity, others to engage in singing and dancing and others to earn money etc. It is from such people that deviances began to crop up in this pristine and praiseworthy science. Examples of their innovations include the Qawāli where singing and music are rampant under the guise of Dhikr, grave-worship where people commit shirk by prostrating to the inmates of the grave, Salāmī where people stand up to offer salutations upon Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه و سلم with the belief that Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه و سلم visits the gathering and other similar practices that have no real connection with Tasawwuf. Because of the existence of such perfidious people and their impermissible practices, it has become a daunting task for sincere people such as you to find a true Shaykh and Tarīqah. Every Tarīqah has these imposters in their midst preying upon the ignorant masses; therefore, one must be cautious as to who one takes as a Murshid (guide). You should ensure that before taking formal bay‘ah to any Shaykh or entering into any Tarīqah, that the Shaykh is a complete adherent of the Sharī‘ah and upholds its dictates. Anyone who intentionally and openly breaks a single commandment of the Sharī‘ah is not worthy to be a Shaykh. A qualified Shaykh is he whose outward and inward appearance and actions conform to the Sunnah of Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه و سلم. A pious and righteous Shaykh is he in whose company a person feels the urge to act upon the dictates of the Sharī‘ah not disregard them." Additionally, if we look at one of the major works of Sufism, of Imam Qusharyi states: "Know, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you, that the Muslims after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the best of them in their time were not given a special name by which they were known other than ‘the companions’ (sahabah) of the Messenger of Allah, as there was no one better than them. They were simply called the companions. Those who accompanied the companions in the second generation were called ‘the followers’ (tabi’in) and they viewed this as the most noble of titles. Those after them were called ‘the followers of the followers’ (tabi’ tabi’in). Then, people differed and varied in position. The elite of the people, who had an intense concern for religious matters, were called ‘ascetics’ and ‘worshipers.’ Then, innovations appeared, resulting in contention between the parties. Each party claimed the ascetics belonged to them. So the elite among the people of Sunnah, who held their every breath accountable to Allah Almighty and guarded their hearts from the calamities of mindlessness, were distinguished by the name ‘Sufism.’ This name became well-known to these great ones before the end of the second Hijri century." [al-Risālat al-Qushayrīyah 1/34]

If bases on the definition of Sufism, you can't gather that it's from Quran and sunnah then you are delusional. The fact is that many major scholars were Sufis. Shaykh ibn Taymiyyah and ibn Qayyim who refutes so called Sufis for prostration to graves and these same deviant practices were both Qadri Sufis upon the tariqah of Shaykh Abul Jilani. The early Sufis are even agreed upon to be great figures and scholars of ASWJ, these include the likes of Hasan al Basri, Sahl al Tustari, Malik ibn Dinar, Bishr ibn Harith, Fudayl ibn Iyad etc. These are all tabi'i, the very students of the Sahabah.
