Yes! Name them grooves! Such a simple idea, but so useful for songwriting & jamming!

Really appreciate you sharing your genius way of brainstorming how to create good sounding music with a sense of feel and direction that makes sense to whatever the underlying groove or feel is via drums and bass or whatever vibe that your ears pick up on n automatically know which grooves and rythyms best match that particular setting and feel so that everything flows smoothly and melodically without having to get stuck on not knowing where to begin. Knowing how to brainstorm in a methodical way such as how your brain filters through it all makes it way simpler to not have to panic with overwhelming pressure by overthinking something that doesn't have to be difficult long as your prepared with a good variety of grooves and got em stored in your memory bank to put to use when the tempo of a beat requires a similar pattern that you know jives along with it. Anyways, just cool to see how a true musicians mind works so that I can start teaching myself how to think in a similar way and hopefully be even half as good at coming up with my own creative melodies when making music from scratch

That's so validating! I feel like I have good insights, and it's nice to know they're grad-school appropriate. I was thinking it's kinda like food: We all know exactly what we ate for dinner last night, and could give a detailed description. But, If we didn't pay attention, and just called it "food," it'd be a lot less likely we'd be able to remake the recipe.

Taking your advice to listen to songs to find common grooves and name them. Keeping in mind that you mentioned it's a great move to match the kick and snare drums while playing rhythm, I noticed Robbie Robertson doing that heavily while playing with Levon on a few songs from the "Live at the Academy of Music" record. Specifically on Up on Cripple Creek. Thought you may get a kick out of that one. Cheers and thank you!

Yes! Levon is forever my hero! He made a great instructional drum vhs in the 90s that is full of wisdom about music and groove.

Adding to my must do list. One of my fav's is to reggae-fy a song or just part of it for spice. hrmmm I just played around with it - if you're careful with your strumming, you don't need to mute that low E with the thumb :-)

When I was careful with my strumming, I was able to make a sonic mess. :-) I better go be careful some more. What was *super* easy was to chuck the pick and just use my fingers for the whole thing, but that's cheating and a different sound. I feel unclean when I let that thumb come over. Maybe I should get over that. (It also feels like a huge, awkward movement, but maybe I should get over that, too) Thanks again for exploring this. I'll go practice some more.
