I believe one of the main factors is that companies have started emphasizing profit margins over quality/reputation/longevity. They understand that the benefit of selling more vehicles at a higher price point and having them wear out sooner (prompting buyers to buy new ones) outweighs the blow of a fraction of owners having more problems. Especially when they are spending less to build the vehicles to begin with. And you know what the saddest part about it is, suckers still fall for it.

Started badly with VW group by missing 2 brands from the list. Kept referring to the more expensive cars. Lots of less costly cars share engines and gearboxes. The F136 on Maserati has cross-plane crankshaft, whereas it has flat-plane crankshaft on Ferrari. I would argue that makes them a lot different from each other.
@d2mcgill
@d2mcgill 5 жыл бұрын
Ian Tang you are correct the crankshaft is different, flat-plane is slightly more expensive to produce because it’s harder to balance, and produces a more aggressive exhaust sound... but the main reason Maserati has Ferrari build the F136 engine with a cross-plane is it creates a lot less vibrations. If you hear a F430 idle you notice it has a much higher idle than a Maserati... this is to reduce vibrations at idle.... as the Maserati is a Grand Touring car a high revving flat-plane F136 set-up doesn’t match its personality.... hence the design change. Other main difference is the Ferrari has a dry sump.

Of course one MUST know where the engine's from. I don't care if a "cheaper" block finds itself in an "Exotic" car, because what makes the Exotic, an Exotic, is the Entire package. There may be intake/exhaust differences, also, for we know NO WAY does a Maserati SOUND/FEEL... like a jeep cherokee, even if they share an engine block. I heard GM used to have a European engine foundry that cast alloy blocks for lots of cars, but those who used them didn't sound/feel like a stateside GM Malibu. And for years, Rolls-Royce used GM turbo-hydramatics, probably because at the time there WAS NO BETTER automatic.

Cylinder heads by Ferrari, pistons by Ferrari, swap out with MoPar heads and pistons and you now pretty much have the 3.6L Pentastar for the most part. So yes, the Ghibli uses a V6 that is the product of a collaboration between Chrysler and Ferrari. In fact, you can directly swap out the cam followers and rockers between the two, even though the camshafts themselves are different.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-((///

Hey! Thanks for putting this together. The Ferrari F136 is the V8 petrol version, found in other Maserati models (but not the Ghibli, much less the Jeep). I know the Ferrari F160 petrol engine found at the Ghibli is definitely not the same as the Jeep. At the 3.0L configuration (Ghibli's configuration), Jeep only sells diesel, and that is an engine made by VM Motori (FIAT), the M157 (which indeed is the same as the Diesel Ghibli). For the petrol Ghibli (base, S and SQ4 models) the Ferrai/Maserati F160 is a petrol (gasoline) developed by Paolo Martinelli, Ferrari's F1 head of engineering during their 6 Championship titles of Constructors in the early 2000's. He was hired by Maserati for the Ghibli project (started in 2009) and thus the F160 engine is designed by Maserati (Ferrari basically), manufactured in Detroit under Ferrari specifications and shipped to Italy for assembly of parts at Ferrari and test before delivery to Maserati. The F160 shares multiple parts with the F154 (the next-generation F136) but with a different manufacturing strategy for the engine block allowing for mass production (and thus cheaper but not suitable for high end 600ish HP - so Ferrari doesn't use it on its cars). I'm a Ghibli owner for several months now and have put hours and hours worth of research and studies before buying the car during my comparisons with AMGs, XE-S and ATS-V, so this section of your video got my attention and I reviewed some of my previous reading here. I do fit on category #2 of people though since didn't know Lamborghini was under Volkswagen group nor mini was BMW branch. Cool!

Yes, there are many shared technologies, manufacturing, parts, development, and designs between or together in cooperation. Actually, R&D is not very expensive, and aided much with CAD during all of my years [40+]. Clearly You confuse R&D with manufacturing, though there is some development required for manufacturing and some 'R' research does exist within manufacturing techniques, process, equipment, etc. If You user name is consistent with Your work, it also represents the typical misuse of title. Audio Engineers in the music recording, etc. are not actually engineers, but technicians and often developed in sound mixing, production, equipment selection, set up, arrangement, also for shows, theatre, motion pictures, videos, etc. An engineer actually designs the equipment and many, are involved in new developments, fewer involved in innovation and much fewer are involved in actual research. When beginning my studies in University to become an engineer, my early thoughts was to become an Audio Engineer, until the information became clear about the work and position. Such, my focus was within the closest to sound including voice within communication systems and electronics. Still my personal draw to audio, sound including playing instruments exist along with some innovative ideas for recording too. Am actually have been a design engineer with many years experience in development, innovation and research, mostly in electronics within satellite communication systems which are 'at the forefront and edge of technology for gov't classified customers. Yes the BMW i8 is very popular, so popular that BMW STOPS i8 production in april 2020 because a total of a dozen sales per month only is not viable. Error no1, a big one since you could have really devaluate the product further with two small electric motors stolen on the tiny i3, not a success either... The Ghibli V6 3 liter only engine uses the US FCA Penstar 3.6 liter aluminium block casting and transfert machining block production line because no V6 were cast in Italy at the time, but beside a similar cylinder spacing only, crank, rods, pistons, liners, heads, Marell- Ferrari fuel injection and turbos are all different. In fact the Ghibli's turbos integrated and supported by exhaust manifolds is a quite unique, exclusive and compact design not found elsewhere. You really have a weard definintion of the "same " engine for two techologically different product using only a common engine block transfer line, specially for one of Martinelli's designs collecting regular "engine of the year" WW awards with V6's engines bringing 6 time the Formula 1 world championship title to M.Schumi. Error no 2. Note you almost could have made a correct statement on diesel sledghammers where 4x4 Levante and Grand Cherokee share the same robust four valves VM V6 found on Ghibli's diesel companies cars, but you excluded diesel from your wrong comparaison. Note proprelly upgraded, and maintained, my 410 HP Ghibli S has been totally troublefree for over 5 years now and just passed the technical inspection with as new emissions and performances but i guess many tyre and oil change shops can ruin such demanding and unknown product with a bad oil change, like on a 911 poorly lifted. But with this kind of wrong info that engine is a plain Dodge van Penstar V6 product, those cheap mistake can be common in the USA and product overall reputation depends on product support more than anything else and suffers from poor handling. Here near Italy, our Ferrari-Maserati dealers are really good with factory trained workshop managers and mechanics, not so cheap but competitive and qualified. If Maserati and Ferrari share the same basic V8 thermal design of V8 's (block and head casting) and same generation ref. number, the similarity end's there, one is flat crank and the other has a conventionnal angled crank. Again not identical and not even similar...For instance Ferrari has one cartography for each gear ratio and a larger corresponding ECM/CPU. Both engine then sound totally different. Note a similar firing sequence battle with similar differences exists on four cylinders racing bikes between scramblers and big bang design, no comparaison possible on performance, vibration, breathing. Error no 3. Note Fiat does not own Ferrari at all any longer. All Ferrari shares trade independantly on the stock market, although strong technical ties still exists with joint chassis design and engine engineering teams but costs are on totally separate accounting and now, engine assembly is getting more and more splitted FCA with PSA having bigger volume in futur. Error no 4. Etc. Note that with your great uniform leveling logic, a Koenissegg 1600hp engine would be the same as a 350 HP Mustang Coyotte V8 or the Bugatti Sharon WR16 just an old Golf R32 VR6 cyl.multiplier... So what about common chassis plateforms where Urus Cayenne, Touareg, Bentayla and now Q8 all share the same baseframe and are all in the same upper SUV market. The world market is about 70 Mio cars per year and a mass produced plateform need 6 to 10 millions units to be highly profitable, and that is the same for engines.... No surprise costly developpements are shared and PSA with FCA are mearging...etc. but today, two identical engines with different cartography downloaded can be very different and totally different with minor hardware changes, cams sensors, compressor wheel, etc. the rest, having the same basic function can be shared and identical on sport cars, GT's, limo, SUV pickups and vans for the cost saving of a larger volume, with long transfer lines from casting to finished, clean and ready for assembly... the rest a Ferrari engine in an alfa GTO or a Vette's LS V8 in a Camaro is just marketing gimicks for geeks. Finally, you could have used some really meaningfull european exemples, knowing that the Duster and Class A can have the same Renault engine and there, for more than double the price you don't even get same value! But who knows the Duster in North America?

@@sjb3460you are correct, Maserati was six time F1 world champion with Manual Fangio and some outstanding chassis and Ferrari with a best engine designer Martinelli six time F1 world champion with Michael Schumacher…So, also rivals, glory was on different time, different key component and later on slightly different market, Ferrari with sport cars and track record products and Maserati with heavy steel grand Tourismo comfortable coupés and limos..The fact this engineering was combined for them and Alfa top range, ended up with regular engines of the year winners and a far superior Giorgio Alfa chassis…almost as fast as AMG low SUV on the Northschleife but while dragging a two inches taller body, height being a real high speed killer seeing Giulia and Stelvio time difference, but with the same engine and same chassis… The sad current side is the consolidation of dealership with an BEV Ponzi scheme occurring…some dealers here stop representing Alfa or Maserati forced by Stellantis to take electrified stock and forced to borrow money for it , but those heavy anvils loose value quickly while in stock and remain dead stock with the possible margin eaten by Ev market price dropping saturation and devaluation…the same week with no replacement announced, MB stopped EQC, Honda the Honda e and Mazda the CX-30, so crisis is heavy…the heavy sales subsidies, bonus and tax breaks on BEV’s only while the rest remain open with free demand and offer….caused many short duration and leasing BEV ownership to recollect the subsides so with repeated sales to existing users harvesting bonuses, but the real BEV market growing sales to new users has been going down and down with the war, while electricity and gas price made some scary excursions , so only Tesla with no dealers and direct sales reacted fast, dropped price, production (officially component shortage as usual) and existing BEV fleet lost and looses value in the process, and fast. The excess recent used BEV stock piling up does not export to Africa and Middle East as well as thermals cars and now face the Chinese BEV crap competition , so with those 2 years warranty period and purchased with the « we ´ll get rid of it after… if we have to…» in mind..the safe bet today seems to be the new Prius 5 plug in hybrid , spot on demand…with sun roof for gas or juice shortage, 10 yrs warranty to hold value,etc…crasy, the demo Prius 5 immediately available are selling for more than the already excessive high new list price ones in Europe and on a long waiting list..lol..

@@sjb3460 the simple fact standard Dodge Penstar v6 is 3.6 litres displacement and Maserati with a similar block (meaning a casting machined thru the same transfer line from rough casting to finished product..) has a block for only three litres displacement with the same cylinder spacing of them3.6 liter one..So the Martinelli design is faster and more robust, yet it was a bit too heavy for the smaller Alfa GTA GTAm made later and therefore based on Ferrari’s four litres V8…with two cylinders removed. One critical aspect of quality control after all the block machining is the washing and cleaning insuring all machining cuts are removed and because of the higher costs involved after of low volume performers the cleaning is more critical. I know at Cat Mossville and Lafayette it was a major challenge, the 33 yrs i worked with them..some armful debris can be stuck in machined threaded holes,,etc..Another engine difference later is Ferrari’s special high pressure cooling enabling smaller coolers to be used and eliminating after boiling issues. But then minor cast porosities are no option and tighter controls may be needed on those. Note this HP cooling Ferrari design was transferred as part of their technical assistance to Ducati now owned by Audi…and this Ferrari tech, via Ducati is now accessible to Lambo..v10 v12 NA workhorses ..a small world..

There were 7 main engines in the F136 Ferrari family. 4 of them were only used in the Maseratis, and the 3 remaining were very different and only used in the Ferraris. The R, S, U and Y variants are all crossplane cranks, equal length headers, single intake manifold engines used only in the Maseratis. They lacked about 60-90hp (or more) compared to each equivalent engine used in the Ferraris. The E, I and F variants were flat plane cranks, dual intake manifold, even higher revving engines used only in Ferraris. There were some other things different such as single versus dual cam phasers, camshaft duration, and rev limits as well.

@@fastcargtv6 Yes. The true Ferrari engines never came in anything but a true Ferrari. Ferrari-built engine is more appropriate when people talk about Maseratis or Alfa Romeos. It’s a real face palm when they same engine as an F430 went into their Maserati, that’s probably the worst.

A set of headers on the Maserati and I think you get back a lot of the power. I would like to experiment with that.

@@exploranator The tubular design on them are actually pretty good, the only restrictions are the four catalytic converters. Secondary delete and high flows could yield maybe 15HP but there’s not a lot left in these engines. They are also equal length primaries from the factory, so I wouldn’t mess with changing out for different ones unless they were long tube equal length headers which I’ve never seen available. The equal length primaries provide the characteristic sound of the Maserati V8s.
