I would love to see same-sex couples in FS but I see the physical strength a serious factor. You cannot expect the same elements from F&F pairs as from F&M or M&M pairs. Scoring them fairly would be a challenge, imo.

It’s honestly crazy to me that ice dance is so heteronormative. It’s all about the performance and the story, yet for some reason we want to limit the format? We miss out on so many fun ideas just because it feels like everything has to be a love story anyway. I truly think this will be groundbreaking

I don't think it'll be groundbreaking. It'll be nice for the skaters involved though. The main issue is that the sport is designed around a man/woman combo due to the physicality of it. Men in general have much more upper body strength and women in general have more flexibility and are lighter. It'll be much harder for a male/male and female/female to pull off techniques like lifts etc. That said a good performance is a good performance. There's always outliers so it'd be nice to give everyone a chance but in general terms same sex pairs would be skating with a handicap.

@@RiksFunStuff yeah, I recognise that. But a lot of ice dance teams already don’t seem to optimise on the upper body strength anyway. You’ve got lean men with smaller women struggling to hold them up because they barely work on strength. Obviously there are many many exceptions. Still, it doesn’t feel as advanced compared to pairs, and leaves a lot of space in terms of a tried and true coaching style. I said groundbreaking because I hope that it will encourage a further level of interest, and there for coaching methods, in the sport and help to push it forward. I don’t think the biggest difference will the genders, but how they master their consistency over a season. But yes, at the end of the day, a beautiful performance is always the deciding factor, and cannot be underestimated. But of course, we won’t know what will happen until it happens

As for figure skating being ‘gay’ - there is still SO much homophobia in this sport it is unreal. I know it’s true, it’s just not even fair to men. You have your preferences yet you have to pretend otherwise in order to be judged with a higher score. Be real and don’t try to be “glittery” and “pretty” in order to gain acceptance, you are your own person, express it well and you can do just the same.

I had never considered Trusova and Shcherbakova as an ice dance team and I have never been so sad. That performance would kill me. Russia really let homophobia shoot themselves in the foot because people would sell their first born for that. There already has been a brother/sister pairs team (I can't remember if it's ice dance or figure skating) which had *her* catching him in a performance. I've been told catches and throws are more technique than raw strength, so hypothetically you could have a tiny femme skater catching her larger butch partner. Wouldn't *that* draw an even bigger audience? 😆 Though honestly, as an aro-ace, I'd love to see pairs routines that go beyond the hackneyed Twu Wuv narrative. After all, it's my understanding that a lot of pairs skaters have no romantic connection to each other, so same gender pairs would be free to explore other narratives. Wouldn't you love to see Trusova and Shcherbakova do a routine encapsulating their friendship and rivalry? Or a pairs routine featuring a skater emotionally escaping the gaslighting of an abusive coach? It would be awesome! 🤩

I can't wait for the My truth book by Kostornaya, I'm glad she's spoken about the shaming interview, that was so awful. About Kamila, how difficult it is to just ban her for 4 years and eliminate her individual results and just give the European title to Anna, it's taking too long and if they want to protect Russia let them keep the team title. I feel there's no excuse for Ilia comments, like when I was 15-16 I was already aware of the world we live in and would discuss with elders about their shitty behaviours. I think Japan would be more accepting of same sex pairs, the real problem would be China and Russia which have worsem their homophobia. Ilia does have the PCS because his skating skills are non existent compared to other top contenders. His scores in the area are already exceedingly generous. What bothers me about his initial apology which is the one I believe he penned himself- was him trying to avoid accountability by calling it teenager behaviour… To those who say all teenagers do it to act cool- y’all are all tattling on yourselves. I don’t exactly think Ilia is a copy of Nathan tho- bc Baby Nathan in juniors WAS good with the artistic aspect of skating. Also congrats girl! I feel like Nathan is a p cool guy irl.

I want to see trios and group numbers and I know I'm gonna get some hate for this, but phasing out ice dancing and mixing some of the elements into the pairs competitions. Hope Rafael Arutunian will set Ilia in the right path and get a real choreographer. His parents did a great job training Ilia's technique, but now they're just holding him back in terms of style and refining his packaging. It's not new, ISU released the communication last year so that prerotation rule has been in place for 1 season. Judges be judges and they will selectively implement the rules, I don't think Shoma floop will get called (though I cross my fingers it will)

You forgot to mention that what makes Iliia skating unbearable to watch is his bad skating skills. He lacks danceability too which makes him looking awkward (he has long limbs and he doesn't know how to move them) but the most distracting thing is his lack of basic skating skills. Though we know that if usfs push him enough and he lands those quads, his scores will rise. We know there will be a sequel to a successful movie right?

I'm all for same sex pairs but the only thing that bothers me is if letting every type of pair competing against each other would be fair. Fully male pairs will probably have an advantage compared to fully female ones in terms of strength and athletic abilities. We can divide everyone in their own categories but would it be too many categories? Anyways a solution to this should be found.

tbh adding a category doesnt seem that much of a problem. yes it would be a new category and regulations would need to be made but it doesn’t seem a bad thing, at all. in fact it seems to me that it would only make figure skating more interesting for everyone and that would make up for the expenses in new funds being put in into this new category. new category, new money coming in, new athletic, more interest from the general public. idk, seems only good to me

I feel like it would be the same for singing in the same gender thing. Generally, like anyone singing higher or lower than the average range, a guy singing in the higher range or a girl singing in a lower range might get praised though the girl singing in a lower range might get hate.

"Illia : grow up" YES PLEASE ! Figure skating being a gay sport ake me laugh, because of just how much straight girls must have fantasized on Javier Fernandez - with very conventional masculinity showed in his performances -, Mikhail Kolyada for those who like blonds, Yuzuru Hanyu in an other style or Shoma Uno in again a different styles. Various kinds of masculinity are displayed in figure skating and it's not bc we don't like a costume we can't see the performer under it and the perfomance. (If style and costume mattered, I would not give medals to any feathered costume and neeeeever to Nathan Chen bc I hate his stylist honestly but the reality is that the skating is amazing and I don't think they take costume into acount in SCORES and that is a good thing). Illia: this boy has yet to learn to be confident about his masculinity as maybe he wasn't raised in finding ballet classes suitable for men. Otherwise he will just be a sadly looked-down good skater like Candeloro or Brian Joubert (French) : good old skaters but omg so annoying with sexist and homophobic comments that we just feel ashamed by them... It looks so nice Hubble and Papadakis, I just love to watch it (not more than usual pairs, just the same). I think it would be more difficult for them due to having less weight and strenght difference between same sex partners although it's not a reason not to allow the to compete. I would watch it at shows at least. (And comparatively to some other sports where there's a real difference in performance between men and woman, ice dance competitions would not be affected in scores I think by these pairs). Plus, not all figure skaters are dating their partners - it's a very common storyline that I also like to watch but it lacks originality at this point - cant' we just see men and women skate as pairs without imagining they are a couple ou of the ice ? Same for same sex pairs : whether they are "real" queer or not (so fun to write this) should not concern us. Stop exualising everything, and let people have their gay panic. Hahaha Just like we don't care if a male skater is gay or not, only the performance counts !

It depends. In pairs yes definitely, in ice dance I'm not so sure. Obviously men can do more complex lifts a lot of the time but so often in ice dance the male parter is the weaker link, due to the lack of men in the sport. Over the years it's made for a really toxic environment for female skaters as often abuse is overlooked as finding a new male partner would be too diffcult and they may have to give up competing all together if they do not allow abuse. Ultimately I think this will allow for far more people to get involved where they couldn't before which i am all for, even if it doesn't become competitive.

At this point im mostly just sad for Ilia. Yes he said some bad stuff(and he has apologized), but now the internett has just gone over to insulting and bullying him to a degree that he had to lock down all his instagram comment threads.

His first apology was extremely poor and didn't actually address the issue at hand, and then after that he posted a video with Jason as a very poor way of damage control. I don't think that people should be sending death threats or being bullies as that doesn't help and is also just wrong, but I also think a lot of people were simply calling him out and were upset with him for those things. I do hope he does genuinely take the opportunity to learn and grow from this but he did something that was ignorant.

50/50? So the sport is actually super gay. That does not mean anyone is doing reverse discrimination but it's an extraordinary number, as high as ballet. Is the popularity of figure skating going down, or only the olympic portion? Last time I checked OnIce perspectives have almost 200 millions of views in few years. They have videos with 20+ million views. Clearly we are talking about modern coreographies dynamic and fresh. So it's not about gender, one way or the other, it's cathering to modern tastes. It's true that the idea that a man and a woman dancing can be seen as patriarchal, disgusting or nauseating to many in today day and age but others will find the change as wokeness (whatever it meas).So it may generate a ton of pulicity and the press and the feminist inteligencia will promete Skating as they never did before, but it's bond to be short lived. The choreographies need to be atractive.

Tbh, Ilia was probably joking around. I think we're all just inflating it, I thought it was funny and kind of true. Yes, he needs to improve performance, but he's also a kid and kids make srupid jokes to cope with a lack of skill or an area of improvement (we've all done it) If people were offended or hurt by it, they need to grow a backbone, there are worst things someone can say or do.

You may have found it funny, but other people didn't and I think that's perfectly okay. What he said was also not even remotely close to being true - just take one look at the way gay skaters have been treated in this sport and you will see that. If it was true that being gay helped your scores, we'd have a lot more skaters coming out. And many who do come out reveal that they felt like they couldn't because of homophobia. I wouldn't doubt that skaters like Jason Brown (who he is teammates with) and Kevin Aymoz (who he has competed with) would find it disrespectful for someone to imply that their scores aren't a result of their hard work and instead their sexuality. We can acknowledge that his age may play a part in his words because he's young and impressionable, which means that he's heavily influenced by his peers and environment. But that doesn't mean what he said was okay or that it should be excused. Young queer kids have to grow up facing this kind of behavior from other kids and I don't think it's fair to them to excuse these kinds of jokes that they might find hurtful. It's what leads to bullying and can cause serious harm.

Here’s my selection for ice dance pairs that you solicited. You won’t like it. 1st, Aliona Kostornaia and Anastasia Zinnina - the two best artistic skaters who have ultra-c elements. 2nd, Daria Usacheva and Sophia Akateva - both amazing ice dancers. If Sophia can stabilize her ultra-c jumps she will win gold at the next Olympics (If the Russians are allowed back but they shouldn’t be unless huge political changes are made). I hear Daria U. might be moving to ice dancing. I think that’s a great idea and if so I’ll start watching ice dance (though I did peek when Vasilisa and partner became seniors). Daria was going to win gold at the NHK when Trusova dropped out even without ultra-c components. She was better than any other country’s skaters. I wish Aliona K. had chosen ice dance rather than pairs. Enough with a sport that risks injuries and since Aliona is the best ice dancer already she could dominate that sport for years. I also believe she would’ve won gold in Tokyo had Yuri Placenta not tricked her into his camp. And his unwillingness to cover his Siberian sized nose with a mask during covid also led to her getting sick and interrupting her training. She certainly would have won any Olympics up to 2022. Finally, I don’t think Kamila should be held accountable for her positive drug test before the Olympics BUT ONLY IF the whore of Beelzebub and her team are banned from coaching for years. It would be interesting to watch if Sophia and Adelia would do as well without her - I think she has made a deal with the devil.
