The task: Take a masterpiece and make a few other masterpieces out of it. Then take it and make a completely different masterpiece with it, with a totally different emotional impact and while you're at it, why not just change the genre completely. Is this too big a task for Angelina? Not in the slightest: she just goes right ahead and does it. I have said it in several comments; we talk about glass ceilings and admire people who have the brilliance to break through them. Angelina, however, has no ceiling, because she is completely limitless.

Great presentation, Alan. First time I've seen you play the full version of a song, twice, the second being acapela. Angelina's different versions of Bad Valentine each stand on their own. But that jazzy, bluesy version, especially her isolated vocals, are a revelation! Filled with so much raw emotion! I don't think there is another talent like hers alive today. Exceptional! Where else will she take us? There are no limits!

From the very first version of this to come out I have been sure I heard "I will mess up your head". I allowed myself to submit to others who seemed to have better ears and gave the argument that "heart" rhymes with "start" and so she was saying "I will mess up your heart". Now, this a capela version has convinced me that I was right with my first impression. Also, I shouldn't have let the rhyming argument persuade me as Angelina is well known for writing lyrics that don't rhyme ("7th Heaven" is a notable example). When "Bad Valentine", the first version on James' channel, became available the CC just showed "I will mess up, Yeah". I don't know who could have accepted that. Anyway, for me, unless Angelina herself says otherwise, it's going to be "I will mess up your head".

The official pop release was not in the same genre as the live performances, I’m sure they sped up her vocals with post production to give it a pop tempo and feel, which I did not like, but the final piano diaries version is Jazz, but you can argue that the live versions would be Jazz fusion, which is Angelina’s genre, and she mixes Jazz with pop and rock with ease.

I doubt if Angelina has ever had her vocals sped up in post production! She's perfectly capable of singing at different tempos. Beside, the pop version was recorded in 2022; the others all this year, 2024, as far as we know.

@@SteveAckerman-ly3qg I’m not going to argue post production, but as a musician I can hear post production especially when it sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard, and that version was an immediate turnoff for me, maybe she did it before she did the live versions, which could explain why it didn’t get there, they probably should have remade it before release, they had plenty of time, almost 3 months, and I’m sure they could tell it was not the best effort. There’s almost nothing that Angelina does that I don’t like, but I hated that version of “Bad Valentin”!

The official Music Video was recorded 2 years earlier at 16 & is my least favorite version. All the live versions & the jazzy version were all at 18 & the jazzy version is literally a Masterpiece.

Great analysis of how artists interpret the same song in different genres. But there's no doubt Angelina is the undisputed QUEEN at this! As with many of her covers, the songs, music, moods are like clay in her hands/voice and she can do whatever she likes with them. "Bad Valentine" is, IMO, her best original so far and a great example of how she can mold the song as she pleases, giving each version a totally different feeling and rearranging the original score to fit the genre she chooses to sing in. And although this is a collaboration with Toby, I hear Angelina Jordan written all over it, not only in the lyrics but also in the arrangement of the different versions. Angelina's vocal resources are so broad that in a similar way as Michael takes one colour here, another there; a brush-stroke here and a different one there to express his feelings, Angelina does the same with her voice, picking a whole range of vocal tools to convey the feeling and mood she chose to covey. BTW, respect for Michael's paintings and artistry! They are exquisite 🥰

If Bad Valentine is nominated for Grammys in two different genres for two different versions of the same song by the same writer and artist, Jordan could sing both versions on the Awards Show and blow the audience away! That’s never happened before! She could sing one version with her band and one with just Toby on the piano. The place would go absolutely nuts!
