Are salmon flies of this style mimicking prey or just colorful to attract salmon?

gex1983 mainly just to trigger strikes from salmon, they’re usually not actively feeding when being fished for

Theories suggest they are meant to resemble more delicious prey, however in fall fishing at least your more agitating the fish, possibly working off its primal desire to strike at something it knows it can destroy and eat.
