Maine lobstermen and women are the most arrogant , ready to fight, ''we own these waters'' giant jerks. of all ''humandom'. but, if you need help they will give their life to help you. all the while laughing at ''how the hell did you get in this predicament'' . i keep my boat in York Harbor, Maine , and i know.

That was their way of telling Pete he's not welcome there. Somehow because of their hardwork they thing they're entitled to their insurance. Remember, a watreman only reaps, unlike a farmer who makes an equal or greater effort to sow the earth so they may reap. And most of the lobsterman are too ignorant to know how to swim and will surely drown should they fall in

Wow people here have some pent up animosity towards lobstermen. Tell you what, why don’t you take some of that piss and vinegar and vent it at the pub or wharf at your local harbor. You know, tell them how you really feel. Or you could just try to put yourselves in someone else’s shoes. For instance how would you feel if the next time you were trying to get something done wherever you worked, some people with time to spare, kept getting in your way?

Congrats Sam on your tour de la cote est! Looking forward to "sailing" along with you 'cross the pond next year. I know it's too late now but hope you checked yourself for tics after each hike. Legend has it that a lobsterman’s mother-in law fell overboard from his boat in rough seas and her body washed up on shore weeks later with a dozen lobsters attached. In discussing disposition of the remains, a fellow fisherman says that in view of the high price of lobster and the poor state of the economy, he’d “set her again.”

Lobster boats: two sides to the issue. On the one hand, the lobster fields have been "farmed" for generations of the same family so they feel somewhat possessive of "their" turf. They often are disdainful and, sometimes, downright hostile to pleasure craft. On the other hand, there are plenty of pleasure craft owners who don't think twice about cutting lobster pot lines (either manually or through cutters on the shaft) when snagged in the rudder or tangled in the prop. Of course, it can be said that it's damned hard to navigate through a lobster pot field when the pots are packed together as they often are. A conundrum, to be sure. I guess just be thankful that it is not a bygone era when disputes between rival lobstering families or other "trespassers" were settled with shotguns at close range.

The wilderness of Maine, if you can deal with the black flies, mosquitos, and year round ice cold water - is beautiful. Unfortunately, the combination of poor, unemployed younger people ( a large percentage of which are on drugs), rich coastal vacation home owners, and the dwindling numbers of gainfully employed overtaxed locals creates a toxic mix of suspicion and animosity. If you're not a rich, coastal, "faux" Mainer, it can be a hard life. This helps explain some of the nastiness one can encounter in the lobstering "community". If you're out on the water in the coast of Maine and you don't run into a lobsterjerk who is heavily armed and/or on drugs, that's a good day. Btw, get a radar Sam (I'm going to keep bugging you until you do). Just because you have one doesn't mean you need to keep it running all the time - using up power and partially frying every cell in your body. If you have it, it's there when you need it, especially in dangerous fog conditions or when sailing solo out in the shipping lanes when you're either sleeping or half asleep. We just lost several fisherman off P-Town - probably from a nighttime ship collision. Even with the best equipment, if you're too drunk or the warning system is not set up correctly, the EPIRB won't always save your life. Ship strikes can kill instantly. Please stay safe, we all want to keep seeing your ever smiling face!

@arnehayn43544 жыл бұрын
