That’s great, as you mount this you’ll see how thick this solid fiberglass hull is. Will you use backing plates our large washers as you mount it; my Monitor seems pretty heavy? You’ll be spending some time in the lazarette, seems like you’ll have to climb into access back of the bolts. This should be a good video, I’m looking forward to it.

That is a great “go anywhere” boat. It’ll bring you home safe every time. I crewed with my friend on his 28’ Dory for ten years in some hairy conditions which scared the bejebus out of me, but the boat never faulted. The tradeoff for the stability and sea-worthiness is in the performance, particularly in light conditions. I could run circles around him in my Bristol 25, itself a heavy boat for its size. Good sailing in her, sir! And thank you for your entertaining videos. Don’t ever lose your optimistic outlook!

nice choice sam. the anchor is perfect. you need a SECOND anchor, not a 'bigger' one...make sure to have at least 100 feet of 5/16 chain, and you will anchor safely in 20-25 feet of water by just clearing your chain below the waterline...in deeper water, your nylon 'rode' should not go to the bottom and chafe. i wouldn't move the swim step, especially if you are going to the caribbean...you will love it. a 'soft ladder' on the side is ok, but difficult for many people to board, and very difficult with dive gear or in seas. the swim step is one of the coolest things about that boat...along with the 'tiller pilot' set up...you just need sufficient power to run it. the bimini is KEY to tropical enjoyment, and YES you will want a dodger after beating in the carib for a season. what a move up from the ranger 23 huh? hahahhahaha. go get em sam...you got a good boat.

Always liked the look of those 28's. Nice size for the way you like to sail. I spent 9 years sailing my 34ft sloop from New Zealand to California. The anchor was no larger than your boat has now and only 10 meters of chain. I spent a lot of time swinging on the hook. Never had a problem. I did have a larger CQR below that never got used. If you're anchoring around coral, just shorten up enough to get the rope portion up above the coral. The anchor will hook up to the coral and hold the boat even with a short ratio. If you're in big winds and need a higher ratio rhode/depth, the wind will push the boat back enough to keep the chain up off the bottom. Less chain weight up in the bow with help with pitching motion. Especially in heavier seas. A dodger is always a good thing when you're off shore. Allows companionway hatch to be open in rain or spray.

Congratulations Sam! you have bought a wonderful boat and I wish you many great sails and miles under the keel. I have owned CD28 #289 for 32 yrs. here on the Chesapeake. So many great memories! Yours has much of what I added over the years. The Freshwater cooled Yanmar is a big advantage over the original volvo md7a's. Have fun hanging inverted in the locker repacking the stuffing box...tie off the hatch, it can close and lock on you in an empty boatyard......looking forward toyour videos.

Congratulations. The Cape Dory 28 is a fine sailboat. If it is going to be your last boat, pull off EVERY fitting that penetrates the deck. The drill out (inspect), fill with glass and the red roll and re-bed. The inevitable leak will not damage the core.

Many, many years ago (early 90s), my first sailing experience was on a Cape Dory 28 in Long Island Sound. My old PhD thesis adviser had one for 20+ years and he took me and a friend out for a nice afternoon cruise. I remember asking him why he chose this boat and he responded that it was big enough for most water/weather, but not too big to single-hand... simple, sturdy and not so fancy that he'd have to spend all of his time keeping up with teak and varnish and not sailing. Seemed like a perfect little fun boat for day or weekend sailing and just being out on the water. I'm subscribing, just to enjoy that memory and catch future videos of the boat on the water. Thanks for sharing your adventure. :D

Congrats on the new purchase. Happiest days in a sailor's life is buying a boat and then getting rid of it. Looks like someone modified the head compartment and removed the lavatory sink in favor of those two lockers. On earlier CD28s, they had a slide out lavatory sink in a box that slid out over the head watercloset. On the stbd. side was a hanging locker. Later models moved the hanging locker over the WC on the port side, and put a nice lavatory sink and base cabinet on the stbd. side. Great boat and certainly capable of long travel.

Interesting. I would prefer storage over an extra sink.

This boat looks great. I recently bought a boat from about the same era. I've been fixing it up for about 1 & 1/2 years. Yours looks ready to go. I got a boat that was 35 feet. A larger boat goes faster and you don't get pushed around by big seas and high winds.
