Yes! It still baffles me how people do not realize after 30 years in the industry that in addition to producing her own vocals, to include arranging and layering the background vocals, she also produces many of her own songs and has written her complete catalog.. with the exception of the few covers she's done. She doesn't just stand there and sing. She is literally the mastermind behind her music and is absolutely brilliant!

I agree with the first part of the sentence to me to she's underrated. In my opinion i feel like her singing style is made for nowadays but it seems to me that they don't want too work with a great singer they rather work with a singer that is not to good so they can use auto tune. Jennifer has said when a producer comes in the studio and hear her sing they tell her that she's very good and they don't know what to do for her and she was like what do you mean you don't know what to do. To me that said they don't want to work with a great singer they rather have someone they can auto tune instead and thats pathetic in my opinion.

Jennifer voice significantly stands out the most because she is pure church gospel soul and power. She has a sound that was way more appreciated within the 60s, 70s and 80s. Back then big voices like Jennifer's were taking over pop radio. Now and days you don't have that at all. I think everyone knows that Jennifer is a vocal beast but her voice wasn't made for this watered down pop sound thats going on these days. She's the type of voice you want to her with live instruments. She added the soul to this song. As for commercial success I feel like Jennifer could've been huge but labels didn't know what to do with her. She knew what type artist she was but the labels wanted to see if she could crossover. Thats why she does film more then music cause in film she can showcase more of her versatility as a vocalist. Hopefully she'll make a comeback but she will definitely go down as one of the greats.

MC has actually written/co-written almost every song that has ever appeared on on her albums. She’s truly one of the greatest vocalists/songwriter of all time. And on a whole different level musically speaking. And that solo F6 whistle run, left me speechless! For me she was one of the main singers who made the whistle register seem above expectations. I’ll always be greatful for her music👑🎶

@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, if you listen closely - she was singing in modal voice but with a lot of air. It wasn't 'falsetto'. M1 mechanism with a very high open quotient. She let it flip into head at some parts, but overall not.
@Ryan_K535
@Ryan_K535 3 жыл бұрын
@@KajiVocals Again I won’t argue with you over this, but her airy coordination does not sound to me as M1. And “hearing” is very subjective. There are signs such as airiness which she expresses, which led me think she is using falsetto. Arguing over this is useless.
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan_K535 M1 isn't just one sound though. It's a whole laryngeal vibratory mechanism. You can create A LOT of timbres and different coordinations in it. She uses a head mechanism in here with air too, but the majority of it was modal which you can notice if you listen to her vocal onsets and offsets.
@Ryan_K535
@Ryan_K535 3 жыл бұрын
@@KajiVocals Unless you are talking about tonal quality or the actual volume output her timbre has nothing to do with M1 coordination. And M1 is not many “sounds”, I don’t think you’re understanding what I’m saying.
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan_K535 Lol. M1 is one of the few laryngeal modes and yes, there can be many SOUNDS or COORDINATIONS produced in them. That was what I meant. She is doing a low-density neutral M1 mode with air there, with a high open quotient. Very commonly seen with singers like Doris Day or Felicia Sanders.

i would like a to learn a more consistent system of translating vowel quality subjective/descriptive terminology into ipa....so i get a better handle of what the hell is going on more of the time....

I hear you, dr Lala. I tend to stay away from learning ipa and just look for another word (or an animal sound) with a similar timbre. I might be lazy, but the creativity that comes from not knowing ipa has really helped me to enjoy teaching! Same thing happens when I write a song on guitar (where I don't read music) compared to writing a song on keys (where I do). The knowledge creates a limitation. Experimentation with imitation is fun!

I'm feeling what you said about trying to sound like different singers when we are practicing. I personally like to try out different styles and go for the diva songs, but the truth is my voice just is not suited for Ariana's light timbre. I can probably learn to incorporate some of her techniques into my singing and that would make me way more versatile, but the fact is that my voice is much better suited for jazz, Lady Gaga, Adele, Amy Winehouse. When I'm singing in those styles, that feels easy and that feels "me". But I do like to challenge myself :) That's why I need singing lessons, ha

Great reaction as always, Sam. Do you think you can analyze Pavarotti singing Ave Maria? I'd like to hear an analysis of his singing from someone with a more formal background in singing.

@@atawbi Well her acting roles isn't anything to write home about. Plus her box office draw is non-existent. While Mariah Carey and Arianna Grande have relevance and mainstream success, something jhud doesn't have.
