Did you hear his review of American idol’s “worst singers” during audition? The idol producers let not skilled singers pass thru to judge panel in order to make fun of them, with Simon and Randy and Paula snickering at the poor contestants struggling. Instead of snickering or being easily critical along with the judges, Sam gave honest simple and positive suggestions on how they could improve. Of course those contestants were not there to listen to Sam , but if they were I think they would have heard positive helpful suggestions for improvement. Of course idol on TV is for ratings and not for helping singers do better .

Her style changed so much over the years. She was never trained, well trained informally (by her mom) but i think the longevity and superstardom she achieved was because of how innovative and inventive she was with her ever changing sound. Oof "There's no shame in vocal nodules" -- that's a concept that honestly never occured to me, but I am grateful to start to think on that, having had them myself (I got rid of them without surgery, but it helped derail my hopes for a music major to be on vocal rest for a year as a sophomore at university). It's definitely not the impression I have gotten from previous instructors. It's often used as a judgement against singers--even though mine were actually probably due to my childhood speech (vocal fry & low pitch to sound tougher, bullying sux), and my singing technique probably developed to compensate for the nodules. Anyway--it seems in the wider world to often be held up as definitive/medically verified proof of bad singing. It's nice to consider that it was just an injury and not hard evidence that I didn't deserve to be a singer 😭 Thanks Sam you healed my heart a little bit today

I thought the same. Physical athletes get injuries, too. Most are due to bad form but you can retrain your body to pitch better, run better, pole vault better, etc. I have nodules and was never that great of a singer and after they developed, i felt even worse about my voice but watching this video has made me realize that I can recover and train to be a better singer and learn to sing in a way that won't injure my vocal cords.

Unlikely. A trained ear can hear the presence of nodules as they impact the way the cords phonate. I've "diagnosed" students who've come to me for vocal issues...obviously I sent them to an ENT for proper diagnosis/treatment, but I heard it in their sound. This is not the voice of someone with nodules. As Sam explained, there are hints of bad habits here that led to the issues over time. From interviews I've seen in recent years, Mariah is...well...a little crazy. She's trying to save face, so of course she's going to say that she has always had nodules, so she can try to deny any vocal decline.

Mariah has said that she's had nodules since childhood. And I'm assuming some of her singing habits, incredibly demanding song catalogue, and work schedule over the years have not allowed them to heal, and worsened them. Also, she's said that her nodules have allowed her to sing higher than many other people and facilitated her singing in the whistle register as well as she does. Obviously, we can't confirm these statements, but just throwing that out there. But anyway, thank you always for your honesty and expertise. This is why your channel is a cut above. And like you said, we can love and appreciate Mariah Carey and still acknowledge that she has some unhealthy singing habits.

I agree but i think she has learned to work with a slightly damaged instrument, which isn't the best way to learn healthy habits so maybe had she not had the nodules her technique would've been less dependent on them and probably had a easier time high belting.

Some of these tours have lasted three years e.g. The Living Proof Tour which had over 320 shows. Mariah works her ass off writing her material. I think a few questions I would like you to explore is: Is her voice a vocal anomaly? How do her vocal nodules (which she claims she’s had since birth), assist or detract from her vocalizations? Is there a nurture versus nature argument regarding Mariah Carey’s vocal type, range, and production of sound? Would her singing still be considered virtuosic today as it was during her debut? Does Mariah Carey have a reliable instrument or vocal technique? How does her tone and timbre differentiate her from other popular singers, and what if any effect do they have on her vocal stylings (melismas, runs, riffs, dynamics, stylings)? I for one would be interested in hearing your musings. It is clear that Mariah Caret is in a class all her own, accompanied by a very select group of women. So it is not a stretch to consider as a basic principle that she is an extremely gifted singer with a natural talent. But exploring everything she can do on top of her basic production of sound would provoke an interesting series of discussion.

Early Mariah is great but like you said, she does have a lot of quirks that aren’t that healthy. I believe she sorted most of that out by 1994, and for a couple years her technique was almost impeccable. I think what hurt her was just an unhealthy lifestyle (too much touring, lack of sleep, drinking), which ended up tiring her voice and made her revert to those bad singing habits as a way to sing “around” her damaged voice, which only ended up hurting it even more. I wish I could go back in time and tell her to take proper care of her voice. I think her story proves that things like these can happen even to the best of us.

On top of the rigor and demand of the songs she performed, she also had to deal with domestic violence w/ Tommy Mottola (who MJ called the devil) early on in her career. The emotional trauma that takes on someone along with a demanding label that works you like a machine, along with other ways that Hollywood has abused her and many other vulnerable stars is a lot of pain to cope with.. there seems to be an illusion of choice sometimes when it comes to being a famous musician but labels put a lot of pressure on you to do things that are not the best for you and also control you so you make them money. Not promoting that lifestyle, just stating it was a way she had to survive that consequentially wasn’t the most helpful to her voice.

She's a natural soprano but given that she has nodules, it's sorta an Achilles heel but also her edge because it helps her produces low notes as well as access her signature whistle register. This is proven when she accesses her head voice in the 6th octave. The vocal color and weight is that of a light lyric soprano. Also her belts blossom in the 5th octave too. She always was navigating her voice through a broken instrument and she bodied her prime but as years went by, the wear and tear is now evident. It's a good thing that she has proven herself already that she doesn't need to sound like her former self to be validated because her discography and legacy speaks for itself.

I just went today to my local ENT because at the beginning of the pandemic (due to requests) I started doing a 3 hour 10 week run on Friday evenings of request driven live shows. The last few i felt my voice was fatigued but just tried to adjust how i approached certain songs so that i could get through it. The last few months I have been really hoarse and thought it may be allergy related, but I knew something was wrong because the hoarseness kept getting worse. I was afraid that I may have nodules, cyst, or a polyp. Prepared for the worst......after he ran the scope down he found that I didn't have any of the big 3 but that my vocal folds were inflamed and suggested that I do 3 to 4 weeks of vocal rest (no speaking) and stay hydrated and then he suggested that I work with a speech therapist and/or voice coach to learn better on how to sing more with my diaphragm to take some of the load off of my throat. Wanted to put this comment out there so that if others are concerned like myself and start reading and expecting the worst, it is not always the worst options you read so much about. I hadn't read of inflamed vocal folds so I was rather stressed out about it. Definitely a good idea to go to an ENT to get checked out. :)

Great video as always! My own theory about Mariah’s voice is that she always had nodules (she herself said a doctor told her she was likely born with them) and in her younger days, due to her excellent technique, she could sing “through” them. Meaning, she was used to them and worked with what she had. However, I believe they made her voice extra fragile and almost a ticking time bomb. The first six years of her career, we see a crystal clear, powerful voice with excellent technique. However, from 1997 onwards she developed a rasp and her technique became more pushy to compensate. The only thing I can think of that coincides with the change of her voice was that she got divorced from her controlling ex husband, who used to basically never let her have a life. With her newfound freedom she began partying, drinking and staying up all night. I think the change in her voice is more due to a change in lifestyle than singing technique, maybe not looking after her voice properly and due to the fact that her voice was fragile in the first place, these things are going to affect her voice even more. From 1997 onwards her voice became inconsistent, still amazing, but inconsistent nonetheless.

Mariah's voice was inconsistent from day 1, and it definitely did not stop being crystal clear or start being raspy in 1997. You can't be born with nodules. It's physiologically impossible. Mariah getting them as a child was likely, but they probably ebbed and waned throughout her career. If Mariah claimed otherwise, it was probably because she misunderstood the concept or misworded herself (like when she claimed to be an alto, when she is clearly a soprano).

Mariah has been around for 30 god damn years but people want to harp on her for not hitting everything the same. No ones else sounds the same, be it Patti LaBelle, Elton john, etc. Singing is comparable to a sport, it requires a mix of exercise and rest, and when you go out to perform execution changes in the heat of the moment, throughout it all missteps happen, but and small. No matter how optimally well you do your body breaks down, to Sam's point you do what you can with information available to mitigate that wear and extend those abilities. But time will catch up regardless...and after 3 decades she can still sing circles around 99% of us.
