Perrie started the song that way because it was supposed to be Jesy, but she had a panic attack prior to start this performance, so Perrie jumped in and sang her part and made sure Jesy was okay until she'd calmed herself, so she was ready to continue with the song later on...

Perrie has a very natural musical theater vocal style where everything is precise, so it's an artistic choice to make everything sound cooler or even more modern and hip... I dont think it gets annoyng like Ariana's diction, but she fights with her own instincts to become more versitlie and I love it (I tend to do the same).

leigh anne (the girl with the trench coat and cool braid) has really honed her skills over the years. she has such noticeable improvements with each of their albums, i'm always so proud of her. i love hearing people in your field mention her. loved this video! i'm a big fan of little mix and their covers have always been hit or miss for me for the reasons you spoke of. this isn't a bad performance and a casual listener could tell that they're talented. but LM have this habit of making stylistic choices in acoustic performances that are unnecessary for their skill level. they've shown throughout their career that they've got the natural talent and hard-earned skills to perform with a more clean, clear sound. yet they regularly give these breathy, head shaky, low enunciation performances that, as a fan, sometimes leave me disappointed and wishing for another version. granted, that is where mixers are spoiled. LM performances are diverse enough that us fans will download multiple acoustic, a cappella, and band accompaniment versions of one song because LM bring something new to every performance they do. maybe that's why i get disappointed with these radio 1 sessions where they choose the styles that aren't my favorite sound from them, because i won't get another version🥺 real spoiled girl shit🥺 that got a long🙈 haha i'm sorry, this video brought about feelings that i suppose are similar to what you went through with your christina aguilera "reflection" video anyway, i love little mix and i love your channel, thank you for doing this!

yeah im baffled, it is like he is trying his hardest to talk them down, saying their runs are sloppy and he cant understand her?
@sierrastar51554 жыл бұрын
Yeah that confused me aswell. Her voice was the clearest its been in a long time and her annunciation was spot on. Its actually very difficult to maintain that vulnerable sound and keep the strong annunciation but she did it perfectly.
@MagBuckley4 жыл бұрын
Really? Because I honestly had trouble understanding her in both of her parts (never heard the song before) and I continue to hear different things than what the lyrics actually say even though I've checked them multiple times now. Then again, I think Perrie often trades enunciation for tone, not just this time. And I personally don't mind! I'd rather hear a beautiful voice rather than "just" well enunciated words. BUT that's why I can totally understand and agree with Sam's critique on that matter.
@MagBuckley4 жыл бұрын
Also (hopefully not offending anyone), enunciation is the correct term here, being synonymous with the word articulation. An annunciation is a type of proclamation, often used in religious contexts referring to the Virgin Mary and her conceiving of Jesus as announced by the Archangel Gabriel.

I appreciate the objective analysis. I watch these videos to learn about their voices and constant praise with no critique doesn't help with that. I'm disappointed that you edited out Jesy's solo part but I think with your comments about the amount of breathy vocals I can take a guess and say you didn't love her part. I hope that despite some fans in the comments being rude you'll continue to react to them because I enjoy your reactions a lot. You probably won't see this with the amount of comments this video already has but on the off chance you do, can I ask whether or not you could tell that Jesy had a panic attack minutes beforehand? I've seen other coaches with different artists say they could tell a singer had been crying or upset beforehand because of the way their voice sounded. None of the professionals who have reacted to this have commented on it and so I'm wondering if it just wasn't noticeable.

Why do so many vocal coaches have an issue with jaw movement in runs. I’ve been told over and over again by other vocal coaches that this isn’t an issue, as long as it’s not tense. Their runs are very clear and a most of the time, they use different vowels in their runs so it’s necessary to change shape. You also say it’s fine as long as it’s sustainable, and it definitely is; they’ve been doing it for 9 years together and have only improved. I’m sorry if this sounds standoffish, I was just interested to see why so many people have an issue with something that doesn’t really affect the singer
@meganaliceward67444 жыл бұрын
I think the thing is, you never truly know what something feels like for someone else so you don't know whether or not 'excessive' jaw movement is affecting the singer. If a singer explicitly says they experience no tension whilst moving their jaw so much - fair enough, it's not a problem for them and a vocal coach working closely with them wouldn't bother 'correcting' it. When you don't know a singer and are speaking in more general terms, jaw movement is definitely something worth commenting on. The muscles in your jaw are so big and connected to a lot of the muscles in your tongue as well so sometimes if someone is moving their jaw around a lot, it may not necessarily manifest as jaw tension - it could be creating some sort of domino effect and creating problems elsewhere in the body instead. I think when vocal coaches point out this kind of jaw movement, they're not pointing it out because it's 'bad', it's just more of a red-flag and something to take notice of, in case there are other issues going on. I agree that the jaw has to move a little bit to accommodate for different sounds, but a lot of singers will move their jaw along with the pitch, which isn't necessary at all and, as Sam has said before in many videos, it would be interesting to know if the singer could do these runs without moving their jaw so much, to know that they're not relying on it. Hope that helps :)
@bapianist33824 жыл бұрын
Megan Alice Ward yeah it helps. I do think a lot of the time that some singers rely on it. I guess you just need to take the time to research to see if it does affect them over time or if they’re adopting unhealthy habits. I do think that a lot of the time, vocal coaches are extra critical about this (not Sam btw) and it ruins the overall reaction.

She did a cover of a musical theatre song I could have danced all night on her instagram if you have time check it out she posted it around April this year and her voice is so clear and sounds so healthy honestly I’d say this performance was definitely a stylistic choice to be breathy because as you could tell she has no problem switching registers.
@AlwaysLM20113 жыл бұрын
Perrie has vocal issues because she shouts a lot instead of singing, she over pushes her range and low key her showing off with her extra high notes into higher notes such as sad songs, little me, power etc has also played a part in her vocal damage. She needs a new vocal coach and needs to use head voice or something else other than high notes. Her head voice is the best so I don’t know why she’s been made into a one trick pony when I’m sure she’s capable of doing more. We get it she can belt but that’s way predictable and not impressive after basically a decade, time for change.
