Sammy Davis Jr. was often billed as the "greatest living entertainer in the world".
He was born in Harlem, Manhattan, the son of dancer Elvera Davis (née Sanchez) and vaudeville star Sammy Davis Sr.. His father was African-American and his mother was of Cuban and African-American ancestry. Davis Jr. was known as someone who could do it all, sing, dance, play instruments, act, do stand-up and he was known for his self-deprecating humor; he once heard someone complaining about discrimination, and he said, "You got it easy. I'm a short, ugly, one-eyed, black Jew. What do you think it's like for me?" (he had converted to Judaism).
A short stint in the army opened his eyes to the evils of racism. A slight man, he was often beaten up by bigger white soldiers and given the dirtiest and most dangerous assignments by white officers simply because he was black. He helped break down racial barriers in show business in the 1950s and 1960s, especially in Las Vegas, where he often performed; when he started there in the early 1950s, he was not allowed to stay in the hotels he played in, as they refused to take blacks as customers. He also stirred up a large amount of controversy in the 1960s by openly dating, and ultimately marrying, blonde, blue-eyed, Swedish-born actress May Britt.
He starred in the Broadway musical "Golden Boy" in the 1960s. Initially a success, internal tensions, production problems and bad reviews--many of them directed at Davis for playing a role originally written for a white man resulted in its closing fairly quickly. His film and nightclub career were in full swing, however, and he became even more famous as one of the "Rat Pack", a group of free-wheeling entertainers that included Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.
In August 1989, Davis began to develop symptoms: a tickle in his throat and an inability to taste food. Doctors found a cancerous tumor in Davis' throat. He was a heavy smoker and had often smoked four packs of cigarettes a day as an adult. When told that surgery (laryngectomy) offered him the best chance of survival, Davis replied he would rather keep his voice than have a part of his throat removed; he was initially treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. His larynx was later removed when his cancer recurred. He was released from the hospital on March 13, 1990.
Davis died of complications from throat cancer two months later at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on May 16, 1990, at age 64. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. On May 18, 1990, two days after his death, the neon lights of the Las Vegas Strip were darkened for ten minutes as a tribute.

My Dad worked as a stagehand on a show of his in Las Vegas. He said Sammy rented out the Whole Movie theatre in Las Vegas (cinedome 12) and told everyone who worked on the show to come watch movies and have free popcorn and soda. This was in the 80's. In Vegas we probably had like 3 big movie theatres them. He said he was Just the Greatest Guy. My Dad still has a black and white headshot signed by Sammy.

Unfortunately Sammy died in deep debt and she worked all the way up to her death to pay them off. She worked everything from dinner theaters night clubs and cruise ships with her act. She was a remarkable woman.

Sammy’s funeral was televised and millions of people watched it, including myself. He was a very public person, so he asked for and got a very public funeral. His resting place is one of the very few instances where a celebrity is buried with the rest of his family who preceded him in death. Thanks for showing that. Regarding the talk of his weight and the possibility of an open coffin, according to a Sinatra biography: Frank Sinatra visited Sammy a few days before Sammy died. Sinatra entered Sammy’s room. Sammy’s appearance was so horrific that Sinatra dropped to his knees and wept uncontrollably at Sammy’s bedside. The cancer had totally consumed him, and the report of his weight being 60 pounds was actually a liberal estimate. It’s highly doubtful that pictures or an open coffin would have been allowed. These days, Sammy’s home may be the property of the IRS. Sammy Davis Jr was my favorite singer/entertainer. May he continue to rest in peace along with his family.

I highly doubt the story of an open casket at the funeral is true. I hardly think his wife would of allowed that considering how terrible Sammy would have looked in the end. I also think the story of Frank Sinatra and the photos is bs. What is certainly true is that Sammy died penniless owing millions to the IRS which spawned a decade old battle between Altovise and the IRS trying in vain to have the debts cleared. She had to sell the Beverly Hills mansion boy that did not cover all of the debt. Unfortunately she was reduced to auctioning Sammy’s personal items such as his jewelry and other memorabilia. Very sad indeed….

I think peoples values have changed. I agree with your assessment 100% and it’s sad. Loved the episode of All in the Family when he kissed Archie, one of my favorites. He was and will always be the coolest cat, man! My dad was a huge fan of the whole Rat Pack, so we watched reruns of all the shows and specials. He would go around singing like Dean Martin and was actually pretty good. Well guess what- as soon as he passed away, the IRS confiscated that house because he owed some 5 million dollars in taxes. His wife Altovise had to move out ASAP and she didnt even know what the hell was going on. I heard Frank Sinatra paid for the funeral. I doubt if he was buried with expensive jewelry because the IRS seized it and his wife needed the money. he left her nothing but aa insurance policy. She had to return to Pennsylvania to live with her family because she did not have any separate assets. Altovise died at age 65 and I think her grave is right next to his

Hi Scott... when I was looking for my own final resting place at Forest Lawn the employee there took me into this section and showed me Sammy's plot. She told me that Sammy's wife Altovise came to visit him every day up until the day she died she loved and missed him so much.

Sadly he didn't get away with it. It's why he died so young from laryngeal cancer. Cursed cigarettes also killed Dean Martin (lung cancer) and contributed to Frank's death also Smoking overall kills more people than illegal drugs.. They certainly took Sammy from us.♥️😰

I was fortunate to be in the recording studio when Sammy sang a radio jingle for Harrah's casino. The band tracks were pre-recorded. Sammy walked in, glanced at the charts, listened once to the music bed, and nailed the vocals in one take. Then he said, "I probably ought to give them two takes, so they feel they got their money's worth," and he sang it again. We listened to the playback, and a few notes in Sammy laughed and said, "Nope. Got it right the first time." He chatted with those of us in the studio for a few minutes, then got in his Ferrari and drove home. Still one of my favorite days ever.

You're right. In the 60's they wouldn't allow black entertainers on the strip in Vegas. So, Sinatra said if Sammy wasn't allowed, he wouldn't perform either. I think he still had to go in through the back entrance. All the black entertainers, used to perform at the moulin rouge in Las Vegas. The building is a historical landmark now. Sammy faced a lot of racism in his day. He persevered, and is One Of The Greatest Entertainers ever.

At first I was sad to learn that Altovise has an unmarked grave, because it made it sound like Sammy didn’t take care of her. But, then, I had to be reminded of all the videos I watched where he talked about her going shopping. Mostly everyone knows that Sammy was not great at managing his finances, but he took care of his loved ones while he was alive, including his wife. It would’ve been nice if he had made a provision for her to be buried next to him, but, his son, Manny Davis, whom he adopted with Altovise is now in charge of managing Sammy’s estate. That estate does make money because Sammy’s music is still being used in movies. So, where his dad dropped the mantle, Manny can pick it up and put a marker on his mother’s grave. I GOTTA BE ME is my all time favorite Sammy Davis Jr. song. He didn't have big hits but he made good records even with Carmen McRae! As a matter of fact I think he did the intro to Shorty Long's version of HERE COMES THE JUDGE. And he did two excellent appearances on The Rifleman TV show. He could really handle those pistols!

The Sammy Davis Jr Greater Hartford Open was a blockbuster PGA event here in Connecticut for years. The Pro-Am event during each tournament was loaded with stars like Hope, Crosby, Martin, etc. so many stars they put on a show at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford during tournament week each year.

Sammy Davis Jr. part of the "Rat Pack" good actor, dancer, singer and television producer who was well loved and liked by many. I recall that Sammy had an car accident where he almost lost an eye if not blind that's why he wore that black eye patch. Sadly gone but not forgotten! #RIP 🙏

I remember hearing about his passing on my "Walkman" while waiting for my bus to come home from work. Very sad. A true, all around entertainment legend! Yes, He did it all!! Without Davis, entertainment industry changed forever!!

Hi Scotty. How are you? I have been watching all your videos but thought I will comment on this one because I got to see Sammy Davis Jnr. I didn’t meet him personally but I did see him. He came to Perth in 1977 and performed on Telethon which was held for sick children. I consider myself really lucky. I enjoyed his music and loved to see him tap dancing. So happy I got to see his resting place along with his family members who passed. Such a beautiful place. Thank you. Take care. As always love from all of us. ❤️🤗✌🏼💕

My mom and dad were in Vegas to see Sammy Davis Jr.. So they were walking from the hotel to the theatre. All of a sudden it started to Rain and they were under a canopy waiting for it to end. Out of nowhere a golf cart stopped and asked if they needed a ride. It was Sammy Davis Jr!!!!!!! My mom and dad freaked!! They told me he was the sweetest and down to earth man they ever met!! He autographed everything they gave him!!!! He dropped them off and said See you tonight!!!!! My mom's legs were very wobbly when she got off his golf cart!!! She loved him so!!! RIP to the best entertainer and gentleman!!! They don't make them like him anymore!!!

So pleased I got to see this video.....just poped up on my phone ! I was actually working across the street from Sammys house the day he died in May 1990 ! We were working on the rebuild of Pickfair.....which is literally across the street there ! The morning Sammy died the street was closed off and we couldn't get to work for several hours ...so many tv companies and satellite trucks parked up and along Summit drive ! Remember it like it was yesterday..... Allways lived and admired Sammy .... Great video 🥂

I remember him on a episode of The Cosby Show and a TV movie about Alice In Wonderland, I think he was the caterpillar. Only to find out later on as I got older that he was a part of the Rat Pack,etc. RIP Sammy Davis Jr
