Used to buy the Heavy Metal magazines when I was about 11 or 12. Saw the movie and it blew my mind. I was 12. Heard the music and bought the soundtrack. I still listen to it whenever I want nothing but good music. This whole soundtrack rocks. Not one bad song on it. I recommend that you give it a whirl. You won’t be disappointed

I started hanging out at local rock clubs and bars around 1980 and I can tell you yes for many years this was a standard song almost every band that came to the clubs had to play it... Vic Johnson on the guitar I believe he's back with Sammy now too and he plays most of Eddie Van Halen's stuff unbelievably !! Sammy was great in his early band MONTROSE then is a solo artist and then with Van Halen and now back to solo stuff. You just can't go wrong listening to Sammy Hagar.

Sammy was slated to be the original lead singer of Van Halen but couldn't due to contractual obligations. He later joined the band. Sammy originally was the front man for Montrose. He is by far my favorite rock and roll singer and guitarist. Love your reactions!

Sammy Hagar wrote 'Heavy Metal' for the 1981 animated movie soundtrack and it made his solo album 'Standing Hampton'... It was Hagar's first solo record that became a major hit - this was before he joined Van Halen in 1985. I believe he also played guitar on it and the song was co-written w/ Jim Peterik, founding guitarist of the band Survivor ("Eye of the tiger"). It was impressive that Sammy Hagar had started in the 70's as the singer of Montrose... then, he broke out as a solo artist and became a big name in the 80's... Joining Van Halen made him both loved and hated by the band's fans, who only wanted David Lee Roth as the singer. He went back to making solo records in 1997 after a difficult split w/ Van Halen, but he recently said he made peace w/ (late) guitarist Eddie Van Halen before he passed away... Hagar still records and tours w/ Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. As far as 70's 'heavy metal'... they did have a reputation. Led Zeppelin were always shocked when someone in their audience got hurt by rowdy crowds... Deep Purple in that decade recalled that whenever they played theaters, their fans would get so excited that the venue's seats were literally torn out and thrown in a pile cos they wanted to move. When Deep Purple's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore formed Rainbow in 1975 and went on tour, they saw the same reaction in Europe. Of course, when disco became popular in the US by 1976, that was all people wanted to hear... In the UK and Europe, it was punk rock that was in demand in '76. 1980 was a big year for heavy metal and hard rock music after disco began to crash & burn, people wanted to rock again.... Van Halen, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath (w/ Ronnie James Dio), Scorpions... began to make waves going into 1981... w/ artists like Rush, Motorhead, Journey, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and others following close. Radio and MTV were hesitant to play heavy metal music and wanted 'new wave' and pop artists on the air... but that changed in 1983 when Quiet Riot scored a major hit 'Metal health'... followed by bands like Motley Crue, Kiss, Twisted Sister, Dokken, Ratt, and others making huge commercial impacts.

Heavy Metal was first recorded when Sammy was with Montrose (Ronnie Montrose being the lead guitar and Sammy being second guitar and lead vocals), a band worth checking out. Sammy got his start with Montrose then went solo until Eddie Van Halen called him to join Van Halen after David Lee Roth left that band. After a couple records ad tours Sammy went solo again and started some other projects along buying a concert bar in Cabo and also marketing his own Tequila. Today his club band also includes ex-Van Halen bassist Micheal Anthony and are still rocking it out.

Great reaction, the funny thing is Sammy Hagar was considered more pop rock than Heavy Metal for most of his songs. 'Plain Jane' 'Bad motor scooter' 'Rock Candy' 'Three Lock Box' 'I can't drive 55' and on and on. Sammy was one of those people that loves his art and his crowds. I was at a show and his mic kept messing up and he got frustrated, it was one of the first headset mics so he could run around and it kept cutting out so mid song, he stopped the show. Replaced the headset with a standard mic and finished the show. When the show was over, he stood in front of the crowd and told everyone to keep their ticket stubs and come back tomorrow because of the mic glitch he thought they were robbed of the best show he could give. So the next night we all got to see him again for free and there were no glitches. Just the kind of person he is. If you really want a taste of who and what Sammy Hagar is, react to 'Plain Jane' then react to 'Black and Blue' from Van Halen when Sammy was the singer for that group. Chris

This song was used in the science fiction movie of the same name, and was also featured on the movie's soundtrack album (the film was based on a comic book). Released in 1981, Heavy Metal was an animated film with enough cartoon nudity to get an R rating (now known as NC-17) in the US. Hagar wrote this song with Jim Peterik, who was a member of the band Survivor at the time. Hagar had just signed with Geffen Records, whose executive John Kalodner had signed Survivor and deployed Peterik to help .38 Special write songs. Kalodner arranged the writing session between Hagar and Peterik, which took place in San Francisco. At first, the pair had trouble coming up with ideas, but then Hagar remembered that his manager had mentioned the Heavy Metal movie was in production and looking for songs, so they decided to write one for the film. They came up with the idea of two metalheads attending a rock show, and the session moved smoothly, which Hagar and Peterik coming up with riffs and lyrics based on those moments of anticipation when waiting for the band to come onstage. Asia, I think he would be interested in this fact. Well, I consider it a fact. Notice how the best heavy rock songs seem to have space in them. I think that’s really cool and true for most good ones. Sammy also plays that lead normally. Also, this is the genre of my teenage years. We did not like or get into mosh pits. That was the next generation in the 90s. We just like to concerts and live bands every weekend we could. I played in our band used to play regularly to pack houses. It was a fun thing. I grew up in Atlanta by the way. Y’all are awesome. Take care. Love you.

Sammy Hagar is a great guitar player! ❤️🎸🎼✌️😎 PS.. watch the first one, cuz Heavy Metal 2000 sucks! 😜 And songs like this WERE played in the rock and roll night clubs. But we just sipped our drinks, socialized, and when a song like this came on, someone would just say "cool" and go on with the groove.
