I don't know if I would call it "competitive", as I don't believe music should be a competition. He's had past injuries, like his neck, and a bad back, which doesn't help matters any as far as drumming goes. I sometimes get the impression that Van Halen feels like a curse to Alex these days, and the only way to get it to go away is to simply flush it all away

It’s pretty obvious that Alex is pissed over Sammy’s book and what he said about the brothers, I like both VH versions as it was Eddie’s guitar that was the spark that ignited the band. I do however think Alex should have included the Sammy years as it’s part of the band’s history, it would compete the story. Hopefully they can all make peace before they aren’t here anymore. This is all so surreal. 1984 was the first cassette I ever purchased with my own money. I was 13 years old. I can remember not having cable because I lived out in the sticks, but a few of my friends in town did. And we would watch the Jump video, and the Panama video when they would come on. I was a Van Halen nut and those brothers were the coolest things in the world. Even back then I thought Diamond Dave was a little over the top, but if you asked me in my teenage years what the definition of cool was, it was Eddie and Alex. And now, I'm 54 years old and I've lived several years in a world without Eddie Van Halen. Can I look at Alex and I see an old man, which is fair enough, because he is. But there's still a part of my heart and mind that sees those two long-haired rockers throwing around on stage like they are forever 20 something years old.

The original band was the planet all things orbited and other versions visited its orbit but were never the real band or planet itsself. I'm very happy that Sammy & Michael Anthony are rocking together and having such great success together. Especially after Edward Van Halen shit all over Michael, stole Anthony's publishing. Edward had a MASSIVE ego. But without Sammy, Edward and Van Halen would have died on the vine musically. Sammy kept Edward and Alex alive by joining that banana having hugely successful records.

Agree with this. Without Sammy, no more VH, or you would have gotten VHIII back in 86 and it would have bombed just as hard. Sammy never needed VH, VH only survived because of Sammy. Alex and Ed had a recording studio, all the time in the world, we're in the studio for 18 hours a day every day for 20 years after VHIII and only managed 4 new songs? F*ck me!!! Neil Peart did not have arthritis. That was Alex Lifeson. Neil had chronic tendinitis the started in the mid 90's or so. I think for Neil, it was more just wanting to go out on the top of his game. See the song Losing It.

@@carlgibbons5777 Chronic tendinitis and arthritis are very similar almost indistinguishable,, especially when you hit 60+. Neil Peart brought it on himself. Instead of just riding on the tour bus, he had to ride his motorcycle cross country in between shows, because he had claustrophobia, and his 360- 30 piece Liberace drum set didn't help either. If had a small set up ,a snare and a few toms and cymbals, it would have been easier on his tendons and ligaments.

Sorry it accidentally closed on me, from Montrose then started his solo career and has worked with other people as well up until he joined Van Halen. I could type about this subject for hours but Sammy just needs to give Alex time to work through whatever issues he's dealing the at his own pace and just respect the fact that the group as the fans knew is over and should anything develops from any of those recordings he left behind I'm sure when he's ready to be will but everyone deals with loss differently.

If I wasn't able to play drums anymore, I would blame the singer. Or if i couldn't sing (DLR) I wouldn't want to be onstage with Sammy either. Its not Sammy. He was honest about Eddies drug and alcohol abuse for decades. It isn't a secret, despite Alex's objections. I saw Eddie lose it in Dallas, on the 04 tour. Was ugly. The way Mike was treated by the brothers, speaks for itself. Eddie is the GOAT, but Sammy is the scapegoat.

I'm so glad that Alex said the magic was gone when Dave left. I have always felt that way. There was a synergy that the original lineup had that was lost with Hagar. I saw VH several times in the early days with the original lineup. I remember seeing them on the first tour they did with Hagar and it was completely disappointing.
