I liked how they did subtle similarities with Chin and Junior Soprano. In season 1 Junior was the “front man boss” and Tony was the real power, but eventually they had Junior milk his mild dementia to escape conviction. However he eventually got to the point where he was walking around town in his bathrobe and knocking on the neighbor’s door asking for ice cream. Gigante was known to be tremendously intelligent and vicious as Gravano elaborated, and his dedicated mental patient act did indeed keep him out of jail for a long, long time, even after he was indicted in 1990. Still, if the FBI wants you, they're going to get you and they eventually got him, but not before Gigante built the Genovese family to be the biggest and strongest crime family in New York and possibly in all of North America. The Genovese family ran like clockwork with no real informants which is why they remained so strong under Gigante's leadership, and also why a lot of history of the family is lost to the public because his guys didn't talk. Not only that, Gigante was apparently a beloved boss because he ran things competently and made money for everyone. He's a very interesting and compelling figure.

His subordinates from the underboss to capos to made men to street associates had to point to their chin or gang sign the letter c with their hand to refer to the Chin. You couldn’t mention his name for good reason. He didn’t want his AK heard on wiretaps. This edict was enforced under Omertà the ancient penalty of death to those who broke the rule. If that’s not some nitty gritty elite LCN capo di tutti capo mafioso gangster shit then I don’t know what is

The only thing I gotta question about Chin was, he went to all that elaborate trouble to avoid trial and jail. But then would travel around at night freely to certain social clubs and to visit his girlfriends apartment thinking cops didn’t do surveillance at night!!! He was caught in photos walking and acting normally..not wearing robes and with a helper! Ultimately, it was Sammy’s testimony that buried him. As other mob informants like Philip Leonetti only had 2nd hand information about killings Chin apparently ordered. Whereas Sammy sat with him face to face in several meetings discussing mob business!
