They're perfectly well aware that the UK consists of four parts: Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland and that each doesn't care about the other three. to give an example: The dwindling British majority in Northern Ireland don't care about the Welsh, and they don't expect the Welsh to care about them. The United Kingdom is NOT about its four parts caring about each other.

There is a residual part of me that is moderately sympathetic to the DUP & Sammy Wilson here because they were truly the first Brexiters to climb off the bus & make themselves comfortable underneath the wheels. 🚌 When the DUP made their deal to prop up Theresa May in 2017, I thought at the time that they were in NO WAY thinking strategically or critically about it because Brussels was never going to allow them to impose a 'hard border' on the island of Ireland. I think Mr. Wilson is portraying his Unionist's anxiety because he sees a Northern Ireland that's changing and which way the wind is blowing.

Sammy's constituency is East Antrim. The demographics are slowly changing. Housing developments around Larne and Carrickfergus are occupied by people less likely to vote DUP. The DUP secured 45% of the vote in the last General Election, down 12% on the previous election. I think it will fall further.

Thanks for that point . Just looked at the last 2 elections sam had a 16,000 lead previously that went down to 6600 that is quite a drop . I am not familiar with NI politics, however it looks interesting. Tks for keeping us in the know .

@@robduncan599 If the TUV field a candidate in the General Election, splitting the vote on the right, then this may become a marginal between DUP and Alliance. Other than that, he is 'probably' safe for this election, but the current trend is towards an eventual DUP loss. Sammy is a Marmite politician. You either like or detest. My impression is that increasing numbers have had their fill and non-attendance in the Assembly may have pleased the core, but it certainly has not won them support in the centre ground.

Sammy Wilson is exactly like the late Rev Ian Paisley, he only wants the British presence in Northern Ireland under his conditions, and if they dont fulfill those terms they can get to hell out of the place. Since partition was imposed Unionists lost their natural homeland of Ulster and in their anger and resentment they blamed the Irish republic for a settlement that was largely imposed by Britain. The Unionists are a hugely talented and proud people and in a New Ireland agreement they could retain their origional Ulster homeland and its special Scots/ Irish traditions. They are also a very musical people and the 12th July could be expanded to be more inclusive of our southern Irish culture. Back in the late 70s , for a number of years i went with my late wife and our two young children for our holidays in The Isle Of Man and had great friendly conversations with lots of Unionist people wno were also there on holidays. . I found them to be honest decent and helpful , and our children freely mingled with theirs . Every time on our way home i would say to my wife , what in the name of god is wrong with Northern Ireland that they cant live together like that.

I remember many many years ago must be 50 years ago he did a tour and preached in a small town/ village Gardenstown NE Scotland free Presbyterian church , which he gave a sermon about the 4 corners of the earth . If he read a book he would also know that what the country the United Kingdom actually meant and was a reference to in 1920 and in 1922 are two different things. After the all island all Ireland super majority Belfast Agreement referendum it’s constitutional definition also changed the United Kingdom. Things have changed quite dramatically since 1690 Sammy.
