Fishing livebaits for Marlin

G'day Fisho's! What a video I have for you have this week! Shauno almost gets speared when a marlin charges my boat!!
All the action takes place on an epic day fishing off the Gold Coast. Shaun and I head out nice and early with a plan to drift some livebaits through the large schools of bait that have been sitting offshore recently. Lets just say it isn't long before we come up tight!

**VIDEO NOTE!! Turns out that marlin was tagged the week before by a boat called “Special K”. How cool is that! What tagged fish have you guys caught??

Fish is probably thinking "damnit, not again.." Was it captured in a similar location? Travelled far? What happens with a recapture, would special K get a notification that their fish had been recaptured? Pretty damn cool.. congrats on the catches..

The other cool thing about this tagged fish is that it was recaptured in only 8 days... Also, the previous circle hook had fallen out in that time and the fish was very healthy. It was recaptured in the exact same spot it was originally caught in. Cheers, Shauno

The little Blacks are just starting to turn up at Port Stephens. Glad to hear there are still a lot of fish on the way down . Most of the marlin caught out of here are on live bait both inshore and on the shelf. Nice to see some honest estimates on the size of the fish from Shaun also. Some blokes get a bit excited at times. Great video keep it up 👍🏻

Great video! I’m hoping to graduate from skirt fishing to marlin to hopefully getting one on live bait this season. Two questions folks: Rubber bands versus Dacron? Pros / cons? Can I use my trolling outfit particularity if it has much longer mono than the 40m Sammy mentioned? It’s 24kg gear so heavy enough just wondering if the circle can hook ok with mono?

I love to see this sort of fishing. Besides fly fishing, fishing with live bait is my favorite way of fishing. One of my fishing dreams is to fish Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna, and specially to catch them using live bait. I plan to move to and live on an island in the western part of the Indian Ocean a few years from now, and I should have plenty of chances to catch some Marlins and Tunas there :)

The bit that looked like it was coming from the gills? Marlin can spit their stomachs up sometimes. That one wasn’t too bad so there’s a good chance it survived but they can spit their stomachs completely sometimes

Yeah what Reilly said, they do it to try and dislodge the prey that is seemingly “stuck”. Plenty of research suggests they can swallow it back down again once released 👍

Thanks mate! You could definitely just tied it normally or use a crimp, but the guys who showed me had found when rigged with the snell you get a better corner of the mouth hook up rate for whatever reaons 👌

Nice Catch, Shawno almost took one for the team, those rods what guides and real seat hardware is Williams using? Oh the Fish Tag did you find out where the fish had been how many km? My old cat captured and dined on a swallow, all I found was a beak and a leg with a tag on it and after contacting a Bird sanctuary organization it turned out this threatened poor guy was part of a research group's release program and flew 2500 miles just to be someone's midnight snack.
