EPISODE 131
In this video we take a tour of Tally Ho’s interior, which is coming together pretty quickly now!
George has been building some beautiful bunk-sides from the original 112-year-old Teak planks. Richard is building bunks and Oak cabinetry, and Patrick has fit a lot of Ash sole-boards.
Meanwhile, Leo works on figuring out the companionway steps and battery locker, Clifton fits the Skylight sills, and Pete adds some more Purpleheart to the Centerline… there’s a lot going on!

Well said. There was an interesting documentary about the CrossRail Project in London, where I believe they said that the final 5% of projected work took 20% of the total time budget! I expect to see something similar happen with Tally Ho! Though I don't think people here will mind the "extra" opportunities that a longer project will give. Fastnet 2025 is the Goal- 100 years since she last entered and won that iconic race - work backwards from there to establish when Tally Ho will depart Port Townsend..... Just sayin'

You can also put your electronics and controls into plastic or metal waterproof enclosures. Interconnect the enclosures with corrugated conduit with gland fittings and you could wash down the area with a hose and it would remain water proof. Enclosures use backboards to mount components on so you can build the panel on the backboard on a bench and bolt it in place in the enclosure with studs. This prevents making perforations into the enclosure itself for mounting. If you do this boat wide, you will have a waterproof electrical system that is also gas tight enough to prevent salt environment corrosion, making the electrical system last decades longer. I was an electrical engineer that designed controls\ systems for use in a harsh chemical environments, very similar application. Anything you can install can be installed inside an enclosure with a door with a window. It is visible and easy to access. There is no reason that the standard surface mount boat electrical devices from blue sea etc, can't be mounted on a panel in an enclosure.

I wanted to let you know that we don't think any less of you, as I imagine you probably had been concerned that it was not in line with your personal ideals or preferences for the project and you would be somehow betraying your viewers or donors. I'm working on my PhD in power electronics right now and the fact that you choose LiFePO4 batteries shows you really did your homework. Everyone is obsessed with energy density but LiFePO4 is a great proven technology and it will serve you really well and has great longevity. And if they are decent, they dont ask him to mention them explicitly, would probably do more harm than good. Every potential Makita/Festool/Bosch customer, who follows this channel, knows by now, that Leo isn't messing around when it comes to quality, so him and his crew using these tools to do such amazing work every day is all the advertisment they can ask for.

I started watching the Tally Ho refit about the time Leo was working with Pete on the deck beams. A lot of sawdust has blown under the keel since then. Thanks for the project update. It is amazing how many talented workers and helpers have touched Tally Ho. Not to be overlooked is Leo’s ability to move this project along considering the staggering amount of details he has to deal with. Then there is all of this video content to create and manage. I found just editing my family videos too big of a challenge. I cannot wait to see the launch and future ocean passages. Leo keep up the great work.

Probably mentioned this before but some rubber lining preferably glued and stitched together like a shape following bag hanging from the chain locker corners and some way to drain it. Keeps it all nice and dry and if thick enough stops the chain from ripping up the interior wood getting exposed to water.

After college I worked on a boatyard doing maintenance jobs, and there was this old guy named Johnny who worked with me on the yard. Your man Richard reminds me a lot of Jonny, kind of quietly steadfast in his work. He had a determined confidence about every job he did. He just did it, no fuss no matter what it was. It's something I aspire to have one day.

Jesus, I always love the footage where you can really see those bronze brackets that connect the walls and the ceilings and lock them together. They're just gorgeous, and really make the insides look great, both on the right and left sides of the ship. And the bathroom is coming along wonderfully!

I saw that you were planning teak, does the plane have carbide tooling? It has been my experience that high speed steel goes south very fast on teak due to the high silica content. Having worked as a cabinetmaker for 46 years I am completely in awe of the work you and your crew have achieved.👍

Love to see this "bow to stern" look at the inside of the boat. There is still so much to finish on the interior. Easily enough to last from now through winter. Knowing that the rigging & mast are 1/3 of the total build, I'm counting down to when we see those aspects take shape!

Companionway! Soles! Face frames! Bunks! Aft-deadwood! This one has it all. I enjoyed Pete putting shape to the last part of the keel. There is just something about shaping these massive timber’s. I suppose making the rudder will be one of the last times the big wood comes out. That depends I’m guessing on how you intend to go about making all of Tallyho’s spars. Great episode.

Awesome!! Top 5 Shameful Things Leo has Googled; 1. How to loose all self respect and embrace being a power boater. 2. How to get your crew to use the dead-blow hammer instead of their fist. 3. Was being from the U.K real or just a figment of my imagination? 4. Does teak sawdust provide dietary fiber? 5. In boat carpentry, Is extra caulking just "as good" as a proper fit, or is my crew gas-lighting me???

Even LiFePo can explode, or at least violently blow off gas, you should have some sort of ventilation system that allows gas to escape, just in case. Don't make that compartement water- or airtight. And don't underestimate the amount of heat these cells will procude. They have an efficiency of 90% (slightly more), but be aware that if you pull (or charge) 20 kW, they will produce somewhere between 1-2 kW of heat. You need, or should have, some sort of ventilation to keep everything cool.
