One of the more brilliant videos ever posted by this group. Pete's description of how carvel built wooden ships are made water tight should be required viewing for any historian studying wooden ships. Also, I would like to point out something about the over-engineering of the boat, which the rivet testing shows is clearly one of Leo's obsessions. Along those lines, I just want to point out that the actual history of Tally Ho is strong evidence that the design and construction as prescribed by the plans is extremely over-engineered and incredibly durable. The boat was subjected to a range of function and mistreatment in sea conditions spanning the globe for a very long history, and came through with flying colors. That is very strong evidence, to my mind, that this version of the boat will be incredibly strong, seaworthy, and will care for the health of its crew and passengers so long as they care for themselves. Also, the incredible beauty of this vessel is growing as its sea-meeting skin is completed. It is so exciting!

Somehow I missed the 'part 1' bit in the title, so that ending really caught me out! I'm all on edge now waiting for the second part - quite disturbing. But the boat is looking so good now, it's starting to feel like it really will be finished "in two years time"!! The amount of work that's going into this is quite overwhelming, though. I shall never be able to look at a boat again and just think "oh, a boat" - now I'll be looking at every boat and wondering how it was built and how much work went into it. It just goes to show that we are essentially and fundamentally a cooperative species, not a competitive one.

The remaking of Tally Ho is such an impressive enterprise. A team of people from all over, of all backgrounds, is working together to produce something remarkable in today's world - a hand-built wooden artefact that should last another hundred years. Every member of that team will have a great memory, something to tell their grandchildren - I helped rebuild Tally Ho! Another aspect of this that is obvious but may go unnoticed is the use of power tools. The manual work going into the project is immense, but it's staggering to think how much more work it would have been to do the job with only hand saws, adzes and so on. But all in all, what a task, and what a result. As a mere onlooker, I feel privileged to watch this amazing undertaking unfold, and I raise a glass to everyone involved. It's not too much to say that the experience of watching this work has enhanced my life. Thank you!

family: hey watcha watching? me: (three days later)...can I have my computer back! this stuff is family friendly...and I really appreciate that..... its quite inspiration too....gets the kids exciting about building things... of course, now I have to explain why we can't build a full size working fire truck in the garage ...lol
