Sampson Sampson Judo Competition (1990)

Here is a unique video for you all. I've been doing judo for many years now, however there isn't much footage of me competing. I never had a camera when I was younger and rarely bothered to collect footage from those that did. However, here is a short clip of me competing at one the BJC North London Competition in the 1990's. I was probably around 35 at the time.
My style has always been relatively unorthodox when compared to the scrappy, powerhouse judo you often see. I have always stood upright, using plenty of subtle changes in my kumi kata to block my opponent. You can't see these changes on camera, but they are there. Hopefully soon I will do a short video on this. Hope you guys enjoy!

I've watched a bunch of this guy's videos and already liked him a lot. Now I admire him because the way he dispatched his opponents was highly masterful. I'm currently saving up money for a judo camp he's been known for teaching at in December. My resolve has multiplied exponentially. Very beautiful judo.

Excellent judo, but why are the refs in a gi? Are they qualified to referee?

In old BJC rules sometimes referee's would wear judogi to signify that they too are judoka and therefore have first hand experience in judo. The idea is to show that referee's have been through exactly what the competitors are going through and therefore have a better understanding of how judo works; aiming to reduce unnecessary stoppages and errors in refereeing - as many other organisations allow referee's to be qualified without ever actually stepping foot on the tatami as a judoka.
