So true... (from a 56 years old and still practicing and learning 3rd dan)

In my nearly 50 years on the mat, I have seen so many people get their shodan, and then quit within months. Many of them practiced and worked with the wrong goal in mind. Their goal, possibly from the beginning, was to get a black belt, which, in fact, is relatively easy. Once they got there, though, they didn't adjust their goals, and had no motivation to continue to go to the dojo. Instead they would have been better off setting their sights higher and broader, and seek intrinsic goals for self motivation.

when I made shodan, my sensei told me that you really don't begin to learn judo until you reach that level. I really think that's true. I saw the same things happening in karate.

This is why my goal is, always has been, and always will be: "improve" Become good enough to be able to teach others. Become respectful enough that everyone knows your true intentions are for good. Become wise enough to understand that not everyone that does an art is actually good at the art. And become humble enough to accept that there is always someone better than you. The goal is to better yourself, not to "get a rank" If you're only in it for the rank, then you don't understand judo at all. It's not a prize, it's not a competition. It's only a measure of experience. True Judo is a lifestyle.

Great video, I always learn so much from you, and I look forward to seeing posts from you. I wholeheartedly agree with you that your Shodan is the beginning of the journey. It’s your way of saying “I’m ready to learn now, let’s get started!” Thanks for another great video!

Sensei....I am a Shodan in Karate, soon to be sitting Nidan. We see this in karate all the time....get black belt and either get really lazy or completely give up. A waste of a Sensei's time really. You never gain PERFECTION or EXPERTIZE. But a lot of new Shodan (in any martial art) think they have by the time they gain Black Belt. EGO takes over....such a shame.

Now I'm not a black belt in anything. But I've train martial arts since i was very young. And there are people who make black belt the final target. Which depending on the style can either be intermediate or advanced level. And i think what's actually holding people back is that rule of diminishing returns. Beyond that, there's the fact that those levels are the entry to creating our own style within a style. That to me is where the real beauty and fighting iq is tested. Well that's my theory.... thanks for your excellent videos.
