I first bought a hollow kalimba and was in love with the sound until I got to using the end tines. Finally irked me so much on certain songs, I bought a Treelf flat board to test, and it sounds much more consistent with resonating end tines, although definitely quieter. I’m giving it away as a gift and was also really curious about acrylic for myself. It also sounds much more consistent and lovely with better end tines sound, but also very quiet. If either of those were as loud as the hollow ones, it would be perfect. I was spoiled by how loud the hollow one was and being able to play clearly for my husband. So many pros and cons to consider! I will probably get a Lingting in the near future. I want to experience all the different sounds.

Treelf is an amazing kalimba, but you're right about how quiet flat boards can be. If the hollow had that resonance it would be perfect 👌

Agreed. Though the more songs I’m playing with the acrylic kalimba, I’m in love with it. The vibration is amazing. And it’s causing my cat to go nuts in a cute way. I can’t tell if she loves it or she thinks I’ll stop playing if she desperately purrs and begs for pets. 😂

The Kalimba is often played inside a hollow drum to dramatically increase the volume and resonance so you can have the best of both if you want

I love acrylic for their aesthetics even though they're not environmentally friendly! And their music box sound is so cute. Second favorite is flat board. The weak end tines on the hollow kalimbas are a deal breaker for me.

Weirdly enough when I first got my hollow kalimba I didn't even realize what the end tines were supposed to sound like. The kalimba jut sounded like a sleepy relaxing instrument to me 😆

@@SamSalvador Don’t worry Sam, I only have one. I probably get one more and that it. Thinking about getting the flat one without the hole. You said it has a clearer sound. I already have an old one with a hole but it only has fifteen keys. It originates from South Africa I brought a half a century ago. (That is pretty old.) I’m thinking of a seventeen key Kalimba for Christmas. I enjoy the rich clean sound of the Kalimba it is so relaxing. I’m still looking for that elusive butterfly one. @@SamSalvador it sounds glorious. It has built in delay and reverb effects. It is as easy to maintain as a guitar pedal. Just keep it dry and free of dust. It is tuned the same way as acoustic kalimba. Do you have any electric kalimbas?

the acrylic and flatboard sounds very soft and resonates better but the hollow kalimba has a very unique sound to it that for me is the signature sound of kalimbas :)
