Seems like they are all doing this. As private companies sadly they can. If you use any social media. You support censorship in some form. KZbin has the least level of this but due to censoring “violence” they silence people reporting human rights violations. Put a warning on it. We are adults if we want to look at a story about gang rape for documenting atrocities and when this is sadly how this person can effectively report this from her corrupt country then let them. Between October and November 2023, Human Rights Watch documented over 1,050 takedowns and other suppression of content Instagram and Facebook that had been posted by Palestinians and their supporters, including about human rights abuses. Meta appears to be the worst. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has a well-documented record of overbroad crackdowns on content related to Palestine. For years, Meta has apologized for such overreach and promised to address it. In this context, Human Rights Watch found Meta’s behavior fails to meet its human rights due diligence responsibilities. Despite the censorship documented in this report, Meta allows a significant amount of pro-Palestinian expression and denunciations of Israeli government policies. This does not, however, excuse its undue restrictions on peaceful content in support of Palestine and Palestinians In addition, dozens of users reported being unable to repost, like, or comment on Human Rights Watch’s post calling for evidence of online censorship, which was flagged as “spam.” Instagram accounts posted about the call for censorship documentation in comments with an email address to send Human Rights Watch evidence. Instagram removed the comments, citing a violation of its Community Guidelines. The problem are bots which do most of the flagged content and the algorithm which creates the flag outside from individual reporting. It would be interesting to see if pro Israeli or as part of a government initiative are actively flagging comments or if this is just bot driven and making bad choices. For example anything with violence words or images or blood gets flagged even if it’s newsworthy. The evidence of shadow banning and blocking or banning accounts is more about putting more than your thumb on the scale it’s your entire 🥾 boot.

Sam I am an ex professional moderator, you’re wrong it’s not that they don’t want to hire moderators-it’s that they think of the mods as nonhuman bots who don’t have rights and who don’t need a decent standard of living. Look up all the attempts of the Facebook moderator union suing them over and over for like a decade. They also have a personal sense of “white innocence” or something and see the moderators as dirty because they’ve gotten PTSD and other stuff from moderating the mental trash on their platform they’re too childish to understand how to deal with. I know that because my manager reminded me not to tell the CEO anything about what we did for work when we met him at events because it “makes him feel sad.” I was a college student and he was twice my age. I worked in games, not Facebook but Facebook is the justification for the industry being messed up.

I think facebook would be an ideal use case for AI moderation. It's a cesspool that no human should have to wade through for their 9 to 5 job. Of course, some people would still have to oversee it, but an AI system could do fact-checking and moderation much faster than a human could, which would reduce the spread of the misinformation. Such a system might not just delete the post, but it could send a note for transparency to the poster, giving sources so the poster can see what the misinformation was and the proof it's wrong, and maybe even learn something. Of course, that's if Meta cared about reducing misinformation. How much would such a system cost? Maybe 1/100000 of the company's value? If they're not doing it, it's because they want misinformation on the platform.

@_Painted16 күн бұрын
@@SkepticalJesusOfficial I do not use Twitter, so I am not familiar with how community notes work there, but if I understand correctly how the community notes will work (based on my own assumptions about how it logically should work), the community won't be able to remove content but can add notes, intended to add context or warnings against misleading (or potentially offensive) information, which will display prominently on the content if enough people upvote the notes. I consider this preferable to censorship by moderators for a few reasons: 1) There is less risk of preventing potentially socially valuable discussions from taking place. For example, it is easy to imagine that social media could be coerced into silencing discussions about Luigi Mangioni's case as "encouraging violence" if the oligarchs push back on it enough, or social media could be pressured to silence discussions about international conflicts if they are flagged as "misinformation" for the simple reason of going against approved propaganda for another example. I think the community notes won't entirely shut a discussion down. Users can use their own discretion whether to believe or ignore the community notes. 2) It is a more democratic approach. I put more trust in the public overall to be unbiased than I do with any smaller organization. 3) It opens up the options to allow more personalized censorship for users. For example, if the community notes are categorized by type, a user could choose whether they personally want to by default show/hide content flagged for particular reasons (ie., sexual content, violent content, potential financial scams, potential misinformation, hate speech, etc.). It puts more control into the hands of users to decide what they consider acceptable to view.

Just a note for fact-checking: Meta/MAGA as well as Twitter and Google have let a lot of employees go in the past year or so, but these folks have not simply been replaced with AI software or a mysterious algorithm. Much of what is referred to as "AI" is actually under-payed and overworked people in several countries of Africa as well as a couple of states of India. These workers are expected to make a decision about a video or reel or post in a matter of seconds. That time constraint, along with cultural differences perhaps or other considerations about knowledge of specific references, is part of the explanation for mischaracterizations. Pluto Press and PM Press have a couple of good books on this and I'm sure there's ample information online. Regardless, good episode!

@ILaunchNukes16 күн бұрын
Because basing one's entire politics around being anti-trump 2017-style simply isn't going to work anymore. Future resistance will require a bigger tent, focus on kitchen table issues, a broader populist movement on the left, greater cooperation, and better messaging beyond just making fun of Trump.

@@ILaunchNukes This. Also by better messaging, dumbing things down. You can't give a 12 pt statement on why something works. "THEY ARE EATING THE PETS" was effective enough to pull some folks off. Keep a broader message for the politically aware and absolutely dumb it down and fire off the simple messages for 4 straight years. There has to be a pipeline of information much like the right has from social media to podcasters. Putting out great messaging means nothing if the people are more entertained by pothead radio.

The reason why Zuckerberg has changed his hair as he is obsessed with becoming a modern day Octavian. The adopted son of Julius Caesar. Octavian, also known as Augustus put the nail in the coffin for the Roman Republic becoming dictator for life. Since it was the custom in some ancient nations for the rulers to be worshiped as gods, he declared that Julius Caesar was a God and by extension, Augustus declared himself the son of God. He died in the year 14 CE/AD. So if there was a historical Jesus, he would have been about nine years old at the time. What I’ve noticed is people who are into politics, tend to ignore culture, religion, and the lifestyles of the opposition. The conservative tech Bros have so much money every fantasy can be indulged in.

I have no idea how can Sam say that Musk wasn't out to buy a president in the first place. Before Trump took the throne with Musk's full-throated support, the top challengers for the Republican nomination were first DeSantis and then Ramaswamy, both of whom he heavily hosted on Twitter. Clearly he was ready to buy out whomever would get the nomination. The suggestion that there is a single major politician in the GOP that would not sell out to Musk has top joke of 2025 potential and we are barely in January.

Meta's given the open source community seriously powerful resources over the last couple of years with the Llama models, directly countering openAI and the US govts stance on this.. basically doing what Alibaba and other chinese research groups are doing. I can see a bunch of self serving reasons for continued moves like this, but when it comes down to it hes giving serious power to the people with these models, and contradicting US govt fear mongering on open source LLMs etc

On the other hand, you have to realize that having a centralized authority, whether that’s a government agency or a team of moderators, determining what is fact or not does pose a threat to freedom of expression. Like it or not, what is politically correct is not necessarily what is objectively true. We need to allow even unpleasant discussions in public so that the public can form their own informed opinions without being hindered by censorship. One good thing about the internet is that people have the freedom to choose whether they engage in a discussion, and can walk away from their screen at any time if they don’t want to participate. Freedom of expression should be reinforced for the ways that people communicate in the modern world. Even if you question the motives of the oligarchs on this issue, what they claim to be standing for in this case is actually good at least on the surface.
