this brief exchange about politics came at the very tail end of a two hour long conversation between the two of them. you can get people to be pretty open to your perspective when you just just talk to them like normal, and don’t condescend. Stav could have just immediately shut Theo down when he said problematic things (like the comment about immigrants doing assaults), but then he probably just wouldn’t get invited back on these shows. instead he just redirects that energy towards more worthy targets (ie. the rich billionaire who benefit from that kind of attitude) while trying to remain charitable as possible. as a result he’s able to remain in the same rooms as comedians like this and remain a force for good in their company - somebody who can have constructive conversations, and try to stem the rightward drift of his peers.
@Ethan_TracyКүн бұрын
Well that's the thing. Stavros is not insulting Theo here. They are just having a regular conversation. He isn't trying to be rude or throw shade. Part of the issue is that the MSM takes right wing bad faith b.s. and seriously, as if it deserves intellectual discussion. When Trump said "Kamala became black" they went around asking dems if they agreed with that statement, rather than just pointing out the fact that he was being a stupid liar, and everyone who didn't immediately denounce him was also a stupid liar. CNN and MSNBC think that treating both sides equally is the same as being neutral, even if one side is objectively wrong. That's the reason that so many Americans are now in the mindset that medical and economic experts are just someones opinion. They think their vibes are as valid as someone elses researched calculations. The legit think science is just liberal opinions because MSM gives them equal weight.

I don't think it's that Kamala didn't recognize the problem, it's that she didn't reflect people's emotions. She didn't get to the root of the problem but she did directly address price gouging and supported unions. It's just that Dems expect people to make that bridge in an information environment based on outrage. She repeatedly highlighted the difficulties of raising children and caring for aging parents. She wanted to give tax credits to people with children. But she didn't point out an explicit enemy because liberals cannot critique capital itself. The price gouging is just the profit motive. No one shits on Trump for never talking about stagnating wages in the face of record profit. I hate liberal economics but Kamala was everything a normie says they want.

At the end of the day, no one associated with this White House was going to win. We should have seen it coming with how monumentally unpopular Biden is/was. A majority of the country sees Trump as the agent of change this cycle. The last 3 general elections, in my mind, have been a vote against the incumbent as opposed to a vote for the other guy. '16, the inevitable backlash that comes from 8 years of one party in the White House. '20, Trump's coalition turning against him because they were mad about the Covid economy, and '24, Biden's coalition turning against his VP because of inflation. It'll swing back next cycle. Unless we repeal the 22nd amendment or something.

Honestly I knew Theo von was like this years before anyone else did. He did a sense where he tried debunking white privilege. And his excuse for that in the joke was that he was also poor growing up. Which is honestly really flawed logic. and most white people that are performative moderate liberals will use this defense mechanism. Because the thing is when we say White privilege it doesn't mean that everyone who is white is well off or well connected. What we mean is that we don't experience the same difficulties for certain situations. White people are more likely to get hired and less likely to be pulled over by the police. That doesn't mean that they have impunity when they're driving or that they're more qualified. it's just that when they hear privilege, they think that we envy them for no reason. And honestly when he first told that joke I understood a bit of what he was trying to communicate. It isn't that white people don't suffer at all. But I'm also not going to pretend that minorities experience the same amount of difficulties. Just because I didn't ask more manly as a boy in elementary school, something that confuses me because we didn't even start going through puberty until the late end of it, male classmates would say that I'm gay or that I act like a woman. But now I only really do that around the women or not straight guys because they're the only ones that are more safe to be around. And even then some women and not straight guys will say that they can't tell. And that's not even the worst problem I have. They hear that and they assume it's a blanket statement meant to attack white people.
