depending on genetics and intensity certain exercises develop different trainers better... the key is focus and trial and error finding out what gives you best results... bench press is great for chest and so are dumbbell presses and flys...so are pushups using bodyweight and bands etc... its all about figuring out what works best for you...

Tom Platz doesn't know how to train legs, Lee Priest doesn't know how to train arms and Eddie Hall doesn't know how to deadlift. I am an expert in all these things and I will teach you how to train with my 12" arms

I really miss having a pec-deck on my very first (all-in-one) home gym 25 years ago, it was the one exercise for chest that really used to pump my chest up and completely isolate it, great feeling afterwards. Nowadays I do bench and flies on a flat bench, but I never get the same chest-pump feeling. My tris completely dominate on my bench and flies just don't isolate the same as the old pec-deck. If I could find a standalone pec-deck, I'd buy one, but the ones I've found are way too expensive for just that one exercise.

I got an actual pec deck for my house. Man, great. Nice full stretch, full contraction. My chest actually has grown a lot from it. No depth though, filled in the center,additional width

Ever swim laps in a pool? Do breastroke no. Stop for 15-25 minutes. It will give u some cardio and the Pump u get in Chest and Lats is 8n sane.

@@cherobinson6371 Definitely! Although I wasn't at the pool, I was in Spain in the sea, but the pump I got from swimming for just 10 minutes was insane. I need to swim more often, but don't often get the chance to go!

Pump doesn't mean anything. A bench press will ALWAYS be more effective for chest than these soy boy flyes. Bigger movements build more muscle.

The great Vince Gironda once wrote a book: A muscle has 4 sides. In a nutshell to get full development you need to hit the muscle from different angels. Especially if the muscle is involved in different movements. So chest is involved in pushing and bringing the arm to the body. So train both....

I always enjoy looking through bodybuilding motivation vids and pics to get psyched when my energy is low. I still hold that Lee was the greatest. Ever. And now I enjoy his take on life. Would love to have him as a neighbor. Perhaps in another life. All the best to everyone. Train well.

I actually saw a brand new Matrix Pec Dec at the new Goodlife at Indooroopilly yesterday, I remember thinking "F**K that's old school, I haven't seen one in years".

Then you truly live a sheltered life. Every single gym I have been in has one many times two and even a Pec dec and seated flye machine where you grip like you do a set of dumbells either sitted or laying. They are ubiquitous in most gyms. I even have one in my home jym.

Most gyms don’t have pec decks anymore they will have a fly machine/ rear delt but i do miss the real pec deck better squeeze for sure

Its not like he would go in many gyms while travelling around the world and going to fitness expos, and things of the like. You could get in amazing shape if you were marooned on an island with only a set of dumbbells, IF you trained using good form and technique and had good nutrition and sleep . Subsequently, you could have the key to go and workout at Golds Gym in California and you would still look like a fat out of shape slob if you use all the machines wrong like the Pec Deck, and have a crap diet.

What you do in regards to resistance training can have a huge effect on your shape. Yes you are born a certain way but yes but you can stuff that up very easily. I'm personally against Smith machines for that reason. It allows for your strongest side to grow faster and create a unbalanced look. This can occur with lat pull down too. Free weights with both sides not connected ensure this doesn't occur as long as you always start with your weaker side and keep rep's even.

Many people don't even know the difference between a Pec Deck and a Pec Fly machine. One has your elbows bent and you can close your elbows together, and hits the inside chest more, the other has your elbows straight and you can not touch your elbows together when closed and hits more the outside. And depending on your seat height you can even alter which part, upper or lower part of the chest you want the ''work'' done.

@@KenanTurkiye I know no worries. Just one machine is a pec flye machine and another is traditionally called a pec dec which is the one you squeeze your elbows together. I always got more inside chest activation with that one. At my home gym I got a seated plate loaded pec flye machine which is similar to a dumbell flye motion.

Sure! You are still getting abduction! Nothing wrong with compound pressing movements for chest. I do them! But you get more arc of motion and abduction of the pecs with a flye movement which is more in line on how the chest is designed to move. With pressing you get much more triceps shoulder recruitment and less abduction than a flye movement.

I use a pec deck but I do one arm at a time traveling past the center of my chest and I get a good pump out of that. But nothing like a bench press will give you.

He did have a point, though. There is no such thing as a shaping exercise. And he was right about the function of the pectorals. Though it doesn't necessarily follow that the pec deck is the best exercise.

The biggest problem with the pec deck is that they arent all the same. Some are quite good but many more arent. And people of different height and limb length each have different feedback. The idea that pecdec, flyes, cable crossovers shape muscle was a prime component of early of bodybuilding mythos with Gironda and others. In the same way so many were led to believe that Larry Scott shaped biceps came from doing preachers. (If you have Al Beckles insertions, a million reps will never give you Larry Scott insertions and shape.)

Exactly! There are various "kinds" of pec decs and their arc of motion varies though. I am not saying the pec dec is the best exercise but that kind of motion is best for the chest as that is how the chest functions on a physiologically mechanical way. For Any pro bodybuilder not understanding there is no such thing as a shaping exercise and believes this boggles the mind!

@@Boss_Scaggz My advice is still correct. There is not such thing as an exercise that changes the shape of a muscle. There is No such thing as a shaping exercises!!! Do not equate making a muscle larger or smaller with shaping. In order to change the actual shape of your born muscle, We will use bicep as example. You would either need to have some kind of reconstruction surgically etc or some future yet known tech that lets you alter your genetics to change the actual shape of your muscle. Exercise will NOT NOT NOT change the shape of your muscle.

I think Lee Priest is correct that the pec deck is a good shaping exercise in some ways but not in what his critic is referring to (whom I think is being unnecessarily pedantic). It's a fantastic exercise, and better than the bench fly as it produces constant tension and reduces the risk of injury to a limited degree AND more importantly follows the natural function of the chest. So yeah, it will bring out the shape of your chest more than say, the bench press, which is more of a compound movement that works triceps and shoulders. I wouldn't go 'golden age form' and try to drive ur elbows so they go way past your chest though. O_o

A pec deck machine is for Pec's only... reverse laterals can be done on a front lateral machine... most gyms have either one or the other... it's very common that a lot of bodybuilders don't know the difference between apples and oranges!

Of course there are shaping movements and exercises. Wherever in the range of motion the peak of contraction is the muscle will take to that shape. This is what bodybuilding is. WTF people. Pecs and traps move in multiple directions and stability flexing and can hardly be compared to a bicep or tricep. Doing half reps for instance on those muscles would be shaping.

Exactly! Shaping exercises are bullshit! They do not exist! it is nonsensical bro science. I MISS wise people in bodybuilding Like Vince Gironda and Mike Mentzer, at least we have Dorian Yates which btw also agreed shaping exercise is bs too. But if he did not agree with me and said he believed in it does not make it so! Because upon all the evidence and actual science right now says no you can not actually change the shape of your muscles that were determined at birth. At least he had a lot of logic, to a point! Again, do not confuse getting muscles bigger or smaller with changing the muscles shape. They are two different things.

Arnold benched 400 lbs for reps. He was pretty sure that was the primary builder, and flyes were a finisher .

I Agree with #LEEPREIST but that Said a lot of Bodybuilding trainers and doctors involved in Hormones and Genetics know a lot more about development of the human body and nutrition than a Pro Body Builder does just because they Smash the Weight everyday and diet Whilst taking the advise from the qualified experts. Example Chris Aceto Nutritionist and Anabolic supplement Guru in Lee Preist Case Trainer and Technician. For Example. Yes When you Training you are dieting and have a Great Body BUT there are people who dedicate the days to research and actual science proven techniques that are validated Facts with qualifications to back it up. A bodybuilder doesn't have a PHD or is a Endocrinologist for a reason! They spend all day eating and Training.

The traditional Pec Dec was discontinued because the chest muscle was being over stimulated and the chest was basically just growing out of control there was young lads running the streets with chests out to there chins this became dangerous and caused issues with balance so they were banned entirely

In All Honesty, I wouldn't say Fly's are superior to Chest Press, It Really depends on Body shape and Genetics, Chest Press does Group more Anterior Deltoid & Triceps into the Movement along with the Pec Major and Teres Minor, But still Puts More Load on the Pectoral Muscles than a Pec Fly in the Downward Movement and Eccentric phases. That Said a Pec Fly or Ped Dec Puts more emphasis on the Pec Minor - lower chest and Pec Major - Upper Chest with less emphasis on the triceps, Anterior Deltoid, Traps. So it Really Depends on what your Trying to Work on Developing more Strength or Muscle Volume. Bench Press is different to Chest Press as Bench Press Groups together more Laterals, Deltoids, Triceps, Lower Back to Aide in the Chest Movement and Put Load onto the Pectoral Muscles Cause and effect Strength & Muscle Development were as the Pec Fly is less about Strength Training and More About Hypertrophy Muscle Volume by Group together Less Muscle Fibres and assistor muscles and focusing more on Full Range of movement and Blood volume to the Chest Muscles without grouping together all the other assistor muscles that the bench press incorporates into the movement and more into blood volume causing more of a Pec Pump due to Blood Localisation in the Isolated Muscles of the chest being less involved with strength training. - Another example is the Pullover Machine which most people think is for the Back were it actually also works the Lower Pectoral Minor Muscles very well aiding in shaping "Tightening the Skin(lower cheat area) and Developing more localised muscle tissue fibre from the downward movement and full full stretch of the lower chest when arching back.

Right You can not change the shape of your muscles. It is a myth debunked decades ago that One can do a specific exercise and actually change the genetic shape of your muscle. You can make a muscle larger, You can make one smaller even . But you can not change a muscle belly without surgery some other major fashion from what you are genetically shaped with. Go change your biceps to a set like Robbie Robinson had with his peaks. Go do all the concentration curls you can and see how that gets you. You will never have his peaks as he was born with that bicep shape! Do not equate size with the shape. Two totally different things. Lee is totally full of shit saying shaping exercise. Ask Dorian Yates about shaping exercises lol.

Fun fact bench press is exercise that causes the most injuries with torn pec, torn bicep, blow rotator cuff. A pec deck, or a fly machine, are easier to isolate the chest muscles with less weight and lesser chance injury

I’d argue with Lee on the validity of someone’s knowledge The anabolic Doc isn’t as big as him or Arnold But knows more about gear and lifting than either of them ever would. Saying someone couldn’t know more just because they aren’t an accomplished bodybuilder is disingenuous I get that they’re having a laugh. But a lot of his followers take what he says as gold

SHAPING EXERCISES DO NOT EXIST AND NEVER HAVE! You have as much luck changing the shape of your skull or other bones in your body as you di changing the "shape of a muscle" in your body which is zero! BTW too many people equate gaining muscle size or working a muscle with a different grip or angle and them perceiving a different feeling in the muscle as having the ability to change the muscle shape. Got news for you IT DOES NOT! Go ahead and do tons and tons of what they call peak concentration curls for biceps for months, hell years, see if you can change you bicep peak from a Gay cutler to a Robbie Robinson peak. Go ahead! You can not! You know why? because you CAN NOT CHANGE THE SHAPE OF YOUR MUSCLE only their size!

This is literally an ad hominen from Lee: attack the man, not the argument. What does someone's physical appearance have to do with their knowledge and advice? The commenter could be 300 pounds with a 60% body fat percentage. He could be a 175 pound Olympic champion with 6% body fat. It doesn't matter: his opinion is either true and factual, or not. The fact is: he's mostly correct. The main function of the chest muscles is arm adduction. The peck deck does that movement. But pushing exercises (such as bench presses) also perform that function, albeit in a limited range of motion and with no tension on the chest at the top of the movement when the pectorals are fully contracted (as opposed to the pec deck where their is full resistance in the contracted position). So as long as a trainee uses progressive overload on either the bench press or pec deck, they'll build strong developed pectorals. Or they can do both and achieve it quicker.

Maybe you can help him understand this! This is EXACTLY what I MEANT! Yes you can get this from presses but not as much as from a flye movement which is physiologically better for the chest muscle as that is what it was designed to do. I do both presses and flye movements. then he cuts me down not ever seeing me! I have a fantastic build especially at my age! better than 99 percent of guys out there. But as you said that is neither here nor there and instead he gives the I am a pro what has he done bullshit. Well first off I NEVER DID DRUGS LIKE THEY DID! That is their choice but that aside it does not change the fact that he is wrong on shaping exercises as you are aware of already.

Exactly. It's a really dumb argument from Lee.. He does talk quite a lot of shit. He must realise I'm sure that someone's genetics will always trump exercise choice. Someone could have the best routine and diet in the world yet Lee will still say he looks shit simply because he doesn't have great genetics. Or get someone like Ronnie Coleman do have some half arse exercises with poor form and he'll blow up

Funnily enough, if Lee wants to go down the whole "only the person with the better physique and pro bodybuilding wins can have a valid opinion" approach: well, Dorian Yates actually won the Mr Olympia, 6 times, and he says shaping is BS...guess Lee defeated his own argument...
