When it comes to weight, the O scale models should weigh around 5.36 times the weight of the OO versions if just straight scaled up. This is due to the fact that O scale, at 7mm to the foot, is 1.75 times OO scale at 4mm to the foot, and being three dimensional objects that increase is cubed. Obviously Dapol haven't just taken their designs and made them larger, but it's still curious that both the Sentinel and the Terriers are less than that, and that the B4 is significantly above that. This is one of the many problems engineers face when using scale models to test designs. When the length of an object is halved, the area decreases by 4 times, and the volume by 8 times. This means a model of an A1 Terrier would have a 'scale' weight in OO of 63grams and in O just 339grams, which would represent an issue when pulling trains.
@iancooper4797 Жыл бұрын
A very useful set of tests to determine which locomotives are more desirable. Speed should be a factor by 170% and 1•7×1•7×1•7 for 4.913. (Mass). One day I will compare my Sentinel, Terriers, L&B (009 and 0-16.5) Manning Wardle 2-6-2T's and Adam's B4 0-4-0T's. It's just a question of finding the space to assemble the various gauges of track required.

Interesting comparison Sam. Perhaps what stands out the most for O are realistic couplings. We always find the couplers to be quite long and rather absurd in OO. For H0 they are at least short and neat but nowhere near real-life. In O they are genuinely authentic 🙂

Good afternoon, Sam! Yet another great video from my favourite model railway reviewer. Fun fact! I have exactly one O gauge locomotive. I'd be interested in a 121/122 or GWR bubble car comparison as well. I don't have many modern Dapol 4mm locos, only really a pair of 68s tbh, but I have a few more in 7mm. I really want a 7mm Manor from Dapol. I'm modelling a western region branch line, so I have a rule that says nothing larger than a Manor or a 37, excepting heavy freight steamers (like a 28xx or WD 8F). Except no one does a RTR Manor yet, and the heljan 37s are a bit above my current price range...

@SamsTrains Жыл бұрын
Yeah absolutely - it's just big enough to make that work really well! It'd be cool to see more in OO, but I guess the market is small for that due to how fiddly it is! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@AllensTrains Жыл бұрын
It is understandable that is is easier for a manufacturer to produce the same loco in two gauges rather than produce different models for each gauge. From the point of view of the collector, you don't really want the same loco in two sizes! It is a bit of a disappointment that all the new TT:120 stuff, is shrunk down versions of the old OO gauge stuff. Of all the gauges and scales, OO gauge is definitely the best scale. It is large enough to give detail and small enough not to require a huge room! Thanks for uploading.
@Valleys56xx Жыл бұрын
O gauge is beginning to attract me a lot with these lovely locos being a *lot* less than the new OO gauge releases. I may have to build a 12 x 2 end to end shunting or MPD layout just for the heck of it... I've handled a few hand made O gauge locos at my MRC and they are truly wonderful and I've aways lusted after that level of weight and gravitas... and the proper couplings lol - also at my age, I can see the detail better.

They are just being smart, like Fleischmann and Roco. Both are the same company, only Fleischmann is N scale and Roco is H0, so they make each others locomotives and wagons in other scale. They just send each other the drawings and they change is so it fits in the scale. I think Depol is doing the same, and it's very smart of then.

Going by logic of "well if its big you may go gargantuan" Beyer Garett in 0 scale? or the exact opposite, get the smallest terrier you can find to go 0 scale. On THAT note i wonder, would mr. Sam's trains care to make larger scale model via his printers? maybe that could help with some detailing and in any ways would be amusing to see him wrestle with being thrown off his comffort zone scale, i reckon that is best way to improve - constantly challanging one's own craft to higher standard or unusual ideas. Slightly strange but amusing idea to review differences across scales on same model by same company. hopefully it trends upwards in quality over time as 3 are slightly too small example size, tho could show general trend.

Excellent idea to compare the scales -- and if anything it shows how the growing popularity of 0 is forcing the 00 manufacturers to up their game in terms of detail in order to stay competitive. I have the 0 Gauge B4, and the cab on mine sits down perfectly right out of the box. You could try refitting the protruding nut, or maybe grind it down a little. I do think the LSWR green is a little too light in colour here, old photos show Adams 'holly green' goods livery much darker than the 'pea green'' passenger livery -- and indeed Dapol's own pre-production drawings show a dark green colour. But it's a beautiful beast anyway. As to ideas for Daopol's possible next combo, I'd really like to see them produce the Beyer 'Metropolitan' 4-4-0T -- especially now that we are getting really excellent 19th-century 4 and 6-wheel coaches to suit. Kits for these fascinating tank locos have been produced in both scales, but I think are now long out of production.
