Great video Sam, I do love Hornby’s J94! I got one of the newest ones earlier this year but sadly it hasn’t been updated with a DCC socket or NEM couplings, which is a shame. That said, I have ended up with several of these over the years since (like you) I’ve found them to be fantastic runners. Even better I remember being able to buy most of mine for around £40 brand new about 10 years ago which seemed like a bargain even back then! One of mine is a bit noisy but the rest of them are silent so must just be luck of the draw on that front. Additionally, while the Early BR Black version doesn’t have any paint in the cab, I’ve found many of the others do. The ones that do have painted cabs look great, no idea why they didn’t bother to do it on every version.

Thanks a lot mate - me too - it's superb! That is a shame - I wish they'd produce a brand new version - I'm sure it'd go down well!! Glad to hear your other ones are a bit quieter too! Very interesting about the cab too - I didn't know that! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

love a good Hunslet austerity! probably my favourite steam loco. I have the dapol version myself, and the buffers are in fact sprung. from what I've seen of the more recent versions they now have painted cab detail and whistles. the solid chunky smokebox dart still lets it down a bit though.

I have the LNER version of this beauty. it was my first Non-Railroad locomotive, but the version I have has metal safety valves and whistles. She does run like a dream and is hands-down the strongest engine I own. Then again, I only own small tank engines and pre 1990 tender driven locos. Absolutely lovely things these J94s.

Hey Sam, another great video, nice to see an engine class I've grown up with and see alot. Just wondering if you anyone could use the mechanism and chassis of the hornby model and then use the detailed body of the djm, to make a fitting loco that works and looks good? I dont know whether its completely possible but it would be cool to see someone try and make a far superior model. Thanks again, Oskar.

Sam, DCC ready does not mean that the loco has to have a DCC interface. DCC Ready only means that the motor is insulated and could be easily hardwired. I actually did one a few years ago with a Hornby chip, but any reasonably sized DCC chip can be fitted. You'll only need to solder 4 wires (Red, Black, Orange & Grey) and it should run fine.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 жыл бұрын
No, DCC ready means that a DCC socket is fitted inside a locomotive - it's not DCC ready unless it has a socket. DCC compatible means there is no socket, but that it is possible to wire a decoder if required! Yes it's reasonably nice and easy to chip a loco like this! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@alantraish3368
@alantraish3368 5 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same model. Just converted it to DCC. It took hours and hours to workout where to run the wires from the pickups and put a decoder in the cab.(had to drill thru cab floor and cab firebox). Mine makes a terrible racket when running and I’ve tried oiling it but not much difference. It is from 2003 after all but it’s strong as as ox with the huge weights in it.

Hey Sam, I've noticed a problem with my hornby j94. The center wheel set has been making a horrendous clicking sound and kicking up every now and then, I believe this may be due to a thin plate attached to the axle, but I'm not sure. Do you have any advice?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 3 жыл бұрын
It could be yeah - there's a copper strip on the inside that's supposed to act as a spring - has this become misaligned? You'd have to remove all the base screws, and then the base itself to check! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Even the newest (2020) ones don't have DCC sockets. To fit a chip you need to saw a bit off the tank weight to make room for it then hard wire. Not difficult- so far I think I've done eleven.... and three of these are now sound fitted by Digitrains.
@cirseltoo
@cirseltoo 3 жыл бұрын
Sprung buffers were fitted from Dapol's originals in 1984. Hornby's are quieter and the handrails were corrected. I have a 1984 original still running and DCC fitted. Hornby's latest aren't any different to their first other than livery.

I have the United Steel Company version of this model, which has a very smart looking livery. I didn't realise it was based on such an old model but runs well none the less. They are a bit noisy at higher speeds but are geared for slow speed running so is to be expected, the instructions do note this and don't recommend running them fast. There are still no NEM couplings or DCC sockets and no detail pack but at £60 new I'm happy with it. One down side is they are a pain to put back together if you remove the body.

Dapol versions are 3 pole motors and the hornby ones are 5 pole. Pretty sure all the details are the same throughout its production the later hornby ones may have finer handrails and crisper liveries but the spung buffers have always been a feature. If you want can post to your Facebook page some photos of an early dapol one (possibly the first version) with a later Hornby one.

By the way, i'm sorry tp bother about this again, but we've talked about Marklin before right? so marklin also owns a branch that's called Trix, and they produce the same great stuff only it's compatible with Hornby's DC rails and controllers, just thought that that might be handier to look in to than Marklins AC stuff. have a great evening!

The J94 from Hornby performs better on a pulsed controller such Gaugemaster or on a PWM controller. They do run well under DCC but are a bit fiddly to convert as you have to break out the soldering iron and hard wire it yourself. Was the odd one out the E4? As far as I could tell all others were 0-6-0s and that one is an 0-6-2.

Excellent review of the Hornby J94 Sam 👍😉 I had to agree with you that the DJ Model was not the highest of it power & detail and I would like to get one if Hornby reintroduce the Class with a much better detail than what DJ Models did. If I get a J94 model I will get one from the Hornby, but I rather go for DJ Models as it got a bit of nice detail, However it not that much as perfect like it not powerful to hauled more freight wagons. The Builders plate says that this one was built by Andrew Barclay. This is because the War Department commissioned a number of companies to build the locomotive to the Hunslet's design.

70 Hunslets are still around ethier running or static. 2 of them are J94s these being No. 68077 and 68078 while 2 others being Hunslets were modified into Thomas and Friends characters. Hunslet No. 2890 "Douglas" is a modified Hundslet/J94 and he runs as a 0-6-0 tender engine and the reason why he's Douglas was for a Day Out with Thomas event on the Mid Hants Railway. Douglas still runs but he works I think on the Mid Landcaster Railway doing passenger work. For Thomas well just for DOWT events on his railway.

The DJ Models Austerity is brilliant for looks, but everything else I agree with others, the motor can be fairly loud even when oiled and serviced and it’s an extremely delicate model. However the Hornby J94 is a great model, runs well, looks the part but potentially a little old? Still good to this day however.
