They certainly enjoy racing round your layout. Great stuff. I like how you have the sidings filled with rolling stock waiting their turn, adds to the enjoyment of the running sessions.

Thanks Keith - they certainly do, and they're not happy unless they're flying! And glad you liked full sidings - I've had a few people ask me to do that, so I keep them full now! Cheers mate, Sam :)

Hey Sam, really enjoyed the review. I too, have the Caledonian blue version train pack, with the three CR coaches. It’s a real treat to look at. I have also found that my blue Caley has an 8 pin DCC socket and I have fitted a decoder. I also have the LMS version like you do and it is equally beautiful. With the increased number of pre-grouping locomotives that have been recently released by The manufacturers, I am hopeful that we can get more locomotives painted in their pre-grouping liveries. The Great Eastern had a gorgeous ultramarine blue passenger livery and I would love to see Claud Hamilton in it. Cheers, John Gondol

I know - it's incredible - it must have been quite scary! I wonder how the coaches coped with such speeds... And whether they were still comfortable at 60! Cheers, Sam :)

I have this, Lord of the Isles, the new LMS black and I had pre-ordered the Tri-ang remembered Caledonian Railway pack after seeing your Tri-ang remembered Lord of the Isles pack. However, Hornby cancelled my pre-order this week so I found an older CR pack. Fortunately it's DCC ready and runs very well.

I bought a rapido Stirling Single. It runs like a dream and is a really smooth runner. Why are the 4-2-2s so noisy? But still another great review. Thanks Sam.
@tenfootvoyager2 жыл бұрын
Think the noise is the rubbish Hornby controller upsetting the loco's. No wonder Sam changed to Gaugemaster.
@janiceandcliff8 жыл бұрын
Just been looking at some old images of this loco, it looks like the LMS moved the brass works plate to higher position on the large splasher. It must have been lowered again on restoration to blue livery. : ) It's a funny old world we live in... : ) Yours, Cliff.

When I also watched InterCity82's video on the Caledonian single Wheeler. He gave it a bad rating due to the Hornby box saying its "super detailed" when its not when it looks like a Hornby Railroad locomotive. Oh its also from the old Hornby packaging with the super detail look on the box. I would agree because of him getting ripped off by the fact that the box said there is super detail parts but yet there is nothing that's super detailed about it.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is very true - Hornby were having a laugh calling this super detailed, lol! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam , nice to see them but not one that I would buy . Liked the coaches on both trains , Mooo 13.47 he he . Cheers......Peter .
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Peter - I can absolutely understand why you wouldn't buy one - they're not very practical, and they don't run as well as other engines, just good for novelty really! The Caledonian coaches are lovely aren't they! Cheers mate, Sam :)
@janiceandcliff8 жыл бұрын
Very characterful locos, both liveries very smart, the blue version does stand out to me. : ) I suspect this wheel arrangement would still be a tricky project for today's manufacturers, so if they have another go, the price would reflect the effort needed. Yours, Clifford.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Hi Cliff - I think you're absolutely right! There is a modern version of these that Hornby made, but I've heard that it's not all that good either! Cheers, Sam :)

They wouldn't be a priority purchase for me but nice to see them. I think your rating was a bit high. The back wheel set not turning, complete see through between the front bogie and the frame, it just looks like toy train stuff not model railway. That said, it was another enjoyable video Sam. Bullmans appearance was so late I thought he was going to miss it. David.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much David - I can see exactly what you mean, and I reckon my ratings were a little too generous too - I think I was over-excited about the livery! Well spotted with bullman, I almost forgot him this time! ;) Thanks for watching mate, Sam :)

Don't like these Single Wheelers very much, yet there is one preserved kind that I take exception to. I admit I like the Stirling Single No. 1 in the GNR Green livery I think it is. No. 1 is in the NRM and she was the basis for Thomas & Friends character Emily I believe, although Emily is in a darker shade of green. I don't believe I've seen a model of Stirling Single No. 1 on your layout at all, and I'm not sure where on earth you'd find a model to buy. But if you can track one down somewhere, I'd like to see her and Emily double-heading together. That would be nice.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
haha that's okay Kelly - they won't be for everyone! Yes the Stirlings were very lovely indeed! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I've always wondered about experimenting with those cheapy-cheap bead chains you get with dogtags/necklaces as 00-gauge chain in place of the not-so attractive hook couplings... Shame my 00s from my childhood aren't in my possession, or available for customisation!

haha! My apologies again haha! Do be warned though - they don't run like most Hornby locos, they're slightly unreliable, but gorgeous looking! Cheers, Sam :)
@brando6BL8 жыл бұрын
I can't help but mention the glaring mistakes on the lining of the wheel splasher and the general sloppiness of all the linings on the loco. Also the yellow oval you pointed out seems totally misplaced. It's clearly meant to be superimposed on the oval plate which denotes the work's plate - situated somewhat southeast of the lemon that was just plonked on wherever. It's amazing that it ever got past quality control, if Hornby actually had QC back then. Likewise the non-revolving axle in the last pair of wheels - what were they thinking of? No - this is a poor rendition of an historic loco, no doubt churned out to make a fast buck.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right, can't argue with you there. Up close, the linings and other painted/printed detail is fairly poor, but then again many locomotives from that era were! This model actually originated from the 1960s, so it was extremely dated even for the 1970s, though the livery was certainly more recent, so perhaps they can't be forgiven quite so much for that. This being said, I do use extreme close-ups for this, which means that those imperfections are far more obvious than they are when run and watch the model normally! The last pair of wheels is just bad design - they do turn, albeit with some resistance. The trouble is that the locomotive is too light, and they don't turn as a result - maybe it was more important to focus most of the weight on the driving wheels though. All the best, and thanks for watching, Sam :)

Mine came with a three coach set, and it runs as well as can be hoped. I would pay a premium for tender pick up and a better motor and lower gearing. Do manufacturers not unite understand that unlike slot car enthusiasts, we like our stuff to go slow?
