For lubricating pinpoint wheel bearings get yourself a soft 8B pencil and give the point a twist in the conical holes in the plastic bogie. Graphite is an excellent lubricator which removes the risk of oil finding its way onto the rails. Works especially well with metal axles.

i bought one mid 1960s. By placing an Airfix L&Y 'Pug' underframe, swivelling, at one end (plus mini funnel on roof) and a Kitmaster motor bogie at the other end, I made a steam rail coach.

Congratulations on your purchase - i liked the communidation corridor additions - very simple and effective - I may copy that idea - thank you for the video. Just a thought on the sheep situation - would it be possible to get a sheep dog to stop them straying on the line and also for rounding up the three that are still at large?

Love the T Shirt ! Very funny . Yes I got 2 Caledonian coaches too . The later Hornby ones are better because they are darker brown but they are rare on eBay as they came with the last Caley 123 as part of a set . I’m watching out for them though .

Great t shirt Bill it made me and the good lady laugh :) You can clean plastic wheels very well with baby wipes and i tend to use a small amount of vaseline in the wheel sockets rather than oil.Those coaches look great though,and there is something about owning an item which as i call it 'pre loved'.It always makes me wonder who have had them before.

Great video, and worthwhile mentioning how good Triang coaches were for their time, I picked up a full rake of 3 LMS mk1s recently and I’m amazed at the quality and robustness. A lot of triang stuff they never painted, simply moulded in the colour needed, this means (in case of blue Pullman and LMS maroon anyway) a bit of T-Cut removes light marks. A rake of 3 cost less than £20. Worth a mention that some earlier rolling stock had through axles which are harder to upgrade than later pinpoint axles. Modern Hornby stuff is better detailed, yes but can I let my children loose with them? Not at £30+ each I can’t. Keep up the good work Bill and totally with you on cheap/free improvement mods, parts and kits can often add up. Why buy when you can modify existing parts?
@TheSpaceace772 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill the triang Caledonian coaches are essentially a triang mk1 so if you look for triang mk1s with interiors and re paint them you should be good to go...kind regards Craig
@PeterJewell22 жыл бұрын
+1 for a video about adding interiors to these coaches. I have several "GWR Caledonian" (!) coaches which need some kind of interior. I have looked at interior mouldings from others, but none do the trick. (Actually, a Mainline/Bachmann 'Collett' interior is passable for the compartment spacing, but they are rare to find without scrapping a much better coach!) These are lovely coaches, only really let down by Tri-ang's use of BR Mk 1 roofs and underframes. The ventilators on the roof are the wrong type and are very noticeably all in the wrong places, so you could do worse than to cut them off, sand and repaint. Really like the simple corridor connections -- very effective -- glad you decided to use black-tac: UHU would have wrecked the ends. Might well try this myself, as its a lot cheaper than the commercial ones.

I'm not too worried about detail accuracy to be honest. I wonder if one of the Peco interior kits would do....

Bill, Congratulations on the coaches. A nice match. For couplings, I replace the tension links with modern bachmann 36-025 short couplings that look like nem pockets. Just drill out the rivet and glue on? Best regards Garage window railway

Well done! I bought some in LMS livery which will need a repaint. A suggestion or two. Wizard models do Caledonian roof ventilators & 6-wheel bogies if you're feeling adventurous. Then you could re-model the underframe details. I suppose how far do you want to go...I think these will now start commanding premium prices - at least until Bachmann bring out new ones at £100.00 - or so - each!!!!!!

Looks a good buy and anything I have brought used from Rails has been fairly described. I have got a rake of the GWR version of those coaches still running well!
@hughoconnor91722 жыл бұрын
Rails used to be a really good place to find things that needed a bit of work and at a reasonable price. Sadly, that is no longer the case in both respects. As a rough estimate I'd guess that a few years ago these would have cost £10 or less.
@48firefox2 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking they are overlength for caledoanian coaches, as Hornby used the BR MK1 chassis to save retooling, along with the LNER thompsons but never the less they are nice coaches Bill.

Hi Bill, I find it quite strange that the Caladonian Railway painted their engines in such a wonderful blue, But then painted their coaches in a completely different colour set.
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
LNER had green, blue and black locos but never the same colour coaches. BR had green and black with blood and custard and maroons. GWR had green locos with cream and chocolates.
@platformten59582 жыл бұрын
To Gerard. Not forgetting that green Southern M7s and Adams Radial tanks were pulling rakes of salmon pink & dark chocolate coaches. BR steamers were mainly all black so, according to your logic, the coaches should also be all black which is fine, if they were funeral trains, but they weren’t. Also, smaller regions in the south-east had mixed colour stock and locos so, if you are a genuine model railway enthusiast, you should know all this!

Can't remember seeing so much keenness in an unboxing... For the first time I've understood your concerns about the space between rolling stock. It looks much more realistic after your alterations, but there is still a gap. Have you ever thought about using a carefully sized sliceof foam to eliminate it alltogether?
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
There needs to be a gap otherwise the coaches will derail when going over changed points etc. The corridor ends have to be able to not only rotate against each other but also slide against each other. Believe me I've tried but unless you are able to avoid any sort of tight radius turning you need the gap.
