Another informative, authoritative, and entertaining review. Please don't flinch from your mantra that - regardless of the price paid - the minimum requirement is that a new loco should run satisfactorily straight out of the box.

I obtained the exact same version, of this model two weeks ago. Similar problems with pick ups, plus it slows down whilst running through point work. The radial trucks that carry the leading and trailing pony wheels do not have enough sideways play resulting in the model presenting a too long wheel base if trying to traverse curved setrack points. This issue has improved with a couple of hours running, but is still visible.

I bought my one off Rails of Sheffield in November 2022 and it has all the same issues. I put it down to not having enough pickups but after your review I will look a bit deeper. It sounds like Bachmann wanted shot of them so released them to Retailers at a discount.

Thanks for sharing - sorry to hear yours had issues too! I do think at least part of the problem is how long they were sat in their boxes for! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Sitting back with a coffee and cookies to unwind the day is always so relaxing with your channel 🙂 Locos having sat on the shelf for too long or in the box as old new stock remains quite tricky unfortunately. The seller should have informed you of course, discount or not. Do you contact the seller in advance, or just click and buy? But even then..., we've had it more than once but we knew the condition of the loco upfront. However, sellers can easily even claim that it has had a service but not every one of them are true to their word. About ~50% of our new old stock acquisitions do need a good service and we are talking about expensive locos even, e.g. new older collectors items or new older special releases (usually hardened oil/grease). As for the loco, even 7 years ago the entire mechanical arrangement was still archaic at the time, good heavens. But she's running now at least, and the price paid is certainly a great bargain. Interestingly, 2-4-2 steamers aren't rare Sam. It was one of the most popular setups for tank engines near the end of the 19th century in many countries. Could be of course that they were less popular in the UK though. Cheerio.

The LNWR,had a good number of Webb 2-4-2t's and they were used on motor trains,(push-pulls),and sundry branch lines! I think most of them were gone by the 1960's! Anyway, that's a companion piece to the L&Y engines! Thank you for your incisive commentary, and I hope the retailers, and wholesalers take notice! Thank you! 😇

Sam, unfortunately a retailer is just as clueless on the running condition of a loco from the factory until the customer specifies it needs to be taken out of its packaging and tested before shipping, and some customers do not want an opened package. I've had terrible luck with some locos, one which was so bad I had to ask for a refund. After this I make it very clear I want any loco to be thuroughly tested and issues put right before it's shipped to me. So far that's worked and my locos run out of the box.

Hi Sam, I've got 2 of these, LMS red one and Lancashire and Yorkshire Lined Black... No problems with either of them, both running great. No slow down on curves 3rd/2nd even on small 1st radius loop. Checking the springing on the 1st and 4th axles, appears to be very similar on both, can't feel a difference. Great review as always Sam... You've maybe got a Friday afternoon build with this model..?

Just to add, interestingly the Black Lancashire and Yorkshire doesn't have sprung buffers, they are a longer and much finer build of buffer, which probably means it's not possible to have them sprung.. Just FYI...

Great review Sam! Yeah I think the age of the model was partly why this seemed to fail so much, I bought my class 5 for £100, conveniently the same one as this, the only issue I've had with it is some slow down around the curves, though I'm unsure if this is an actual loco issue or down to the fact I'm using a standard hornby train set controller with it, for it's age though it seems to hold up quite well, I do quite love these engines

The way the non-driven axles are assembled to pick up power is a bit old-fashioned. It's something some of my old steam tender engines have (even the drive axles are one-sided) and something I'd expect from a lighted passenger car. If you like unusual wheel arrangements, your next 3D printed model should be of North Eastern Railway 66 "Aerolite" (LNER X1) with a 2-2-4 wheel arrangement. You can find the real one at the NRM.

This was a good and balanced review. Incidentally, I've got a Class 5 as well, but I didn't think she was as good as what you've made her out to be (but each to their own, I guess). My Class 5 is in BR lined black (early crest) and numbered 50705. And she's also the only 2-4-2 in my collection. That reminds me, you can get these engines in Train Simulator (from a developer called Caledonia Works). It'd be interesting to see a TS video with engines that you've also got in model form.

Hi Sam! Sorry to hear that you had problems with this loco due it be in storage for some time. I've already come to terms with the fact that if I buy either a Hornby or Bachmann locomotive that what I get is basically an assembled model that requires tweaking to get it to run properly. To me that is reflected in the price I pay (£100.- or so) and I prefer this over any other brand on offer.😊 Greets from the Netherlands. ErikJan

Hi Sam, great review and if delivered working what a bargain. Such a great looking locomotive with a superb finish. I bought a Bachmann 4575 recently which was also an older release, but at full price of £140 (I wanted this one for the BR unlined early emblem livery). Runs like a dream and looks the business, but such a shame it was delivered in a box that looked like it had been flushed down the lav! When I reported this I was offered a £10 voucher on my next purchase.

Bought the Crimson and Lined Black Lancs and Yorks versions for £110 each in Oct2022. Great looking loco and nice cab detailing, on the L&Y version the cab was painted in lovely light cream colour highlighting the detail. Re your running issues, they should all be directed at Bachmann not MRD ie are MRD supposed to anticipate every question/eventuality? As long as its a new loco and advertised as such, the rest is down to good service practice and you should research before disassembling. If you know its an older loco b4 buying, you should service before running. And the eng design is a function of what they hv to pack in. I also had to wait ages for mine from ordering ie it was along time in cmg to production.

The wheel arrangement was more common than models. The LNER absorbed nine types that they classed F1 to F9 totalling 349 locomotives. More than their Pacific's I think but just about all the LNER Pacific's have RTR models but no F class models. The F types made from about 1884 to 1909 but all withdrawn by 1958, so similar usage range of the preserved L&YR class. GCR, NER and GER used them but mostly GER which were the longest lasting. Would be interesting to quantify which wheel arrangements are over and under represented in model form, but that tells a story of how many modellers of railways do not like to represent the reality of railways too much.

It may just be me today (last night I turned down the diameter of Flying Scotsman’s handrail knobs), but the gigantic handrail knobs, unrealistic blackened rods, and thick buffer casings strike me as apparent and significantly detracting from and otherwise spick&spam loco. Shame about the mechanism/quality control. This configuration would be a great candidate for beam compensation, Varney type springing, with a single bent wire acting as downward springing and side control. With the carrying wheel springing, it’s always a balance of tractive effort, track handling, and roughness of riding. I’ll make CAD for a device to measure weight per wheel to help us see how locos compare. I wonder how this loco and others will age, as now my best runner by far is my old Bachmann Thomas, Toby, and Salty while my other locos haven’t improved in performance. I don’t think there is a way to predict improvement in performance. Springs really should be adjustable by the way, it’s all to easy to see a repeat of today with derailments. Thanks as always Sam!

There is some truth to what Sam says about locos sitting in the box for many years. It's like a car. If we let a car sit in the garage for many years then it probably won't start and will likely be completely ruined due to creeping corrosion, dried up grease, bad oil, stale gas (petrol :-), and other factors. So the moral of the story is: Drive your car as much as you can. And run your locos around the track as much as you can too. And perform routine maintenance. As if Sam wouldn't :-)

Excellent and unbiassed review as always, thank you for this. One thing I'm a bit worried about on this model is the works plate on the side of the smokebox -- in fact, on each side of the smokebox. Normally there was only one of these on a loco, so having one on each side is -- to say the least -- unusual. Also, the plate says 'LMS', which again is odd. I'm not an expert on this, but I'd certainly expect an LYR loco to have 'LYR' on the builder's plate, even if it had been rebuilt with a superheater by the LMS. I don't own any version of this model, but I have to wonder if they all carry the same works number on these plates -- which is a big slip-up on Bachmann's part, given the different running numbers, and hence works numbers, for models in the different liveries.

Seems you've got a faulty model. As your LMS version, mine (LMS version too) was a good runner when I received her. I've paid mine on the GBP 127 mark as far as i can remember. Mine was a reissue, that explains things. The black BR like yours was already on sale before my LMS was reissued. The drivetrain is clearly one, if not many notches below what a good brand like Rapido or Accurascale can do. But overall, i will qualify her as a fair/good model.

I really love this class of tank engine Sam. I actually have one of these, I think I paid £53 for it I've forgotten, but I absolutely love it. Cheers Jasper & Willow

Reviewing this one again? I've always loved the loco, and I much prefer the red livery you reviewed a few years ago. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!

Hi Sam! Man, it's a shame that this 5 isn't the best. Always loved those locos, but it seems quite typical of Bachmann. 😔

Hi Sam, I think I found the odd one out, is it the dean goods because it's a 0-6-0 tender engine? Cheers Jasper & Willow

Sam, maybe you should look up the JGR Class 400, it's a British built 2-4-2 that operated in Japan. No RTR model is produced unfortunately.

Your other model isn't in original Lancashire and Yorkshire lined black livery like 1008 in the NRM, yours in in early LMS lined crimson.

I’m confused. Didn’t you say you didn’t have any other 2-4-2s and yet you keep showing your crimson lake 2-4-2.
