Edward Thompson’s renumbering scheme is that applied. Lovely looking model. I built several wartime black ones from the railroad model which, IMO, is actually better in a lot of ways than the super detail models.

Hi Sam. Another wonderfully forensic review. I picked up my Lemburg for £120-odd too, and love it. It looks & runs superbly and doesn't have the small body imperfections that yours has. I SHOULD'VE snapped up the A1 version, too, but as they say, "He who hesitates is lost." The A1/A3s were magnificently elegant locos. People forget that many were still in frontline service on the ECML right up until the introduction of the mighty Deltics. PS: I'd had given it 4 stars for value and snook it into a Grade A 😊

For a wartime black loco which would never have been cleaned, this loco already looks ex-works and very glossy. I don’t know whether less varnish or fewer coats of paint would have been applied to save time and money, but the reality would have been a filthy loco very quickly. I equally don’t think the smokebox would have been a different colour in anyway when recently turned out. I’m not aware that they used heat-proof paint pre-preservation so a brand new loco would most likely have had a gloss black smokebox until it weathered down (along with the rest of the loco). If Matt varnish was being used during the war, it would probably have applied to the whole loco. Overall, I think Hornby’s pristine finish is a very good portrayal of a newly painted A3.

It's different for sure. We are so used to the classic apple green livery that even br blue and br green can look really out of place. Hi Sam . . . great review and I really like the black livery on the A3. As others have commented, there are LOADS of green versions of LNER locos out there so this makes a nice change. As regards loco liveries in general, I'm quite surprised at how many are offered in BR express blue as, having been a trainspotter back then, it was comparatively short lived to the extent that I can only just remember seeing it. As a WCML enthusiast, then and now, I found it exciting when some of the Duchesses and Princesses were painted in LMS red but, to be honest, I always thought they looked better in Brunswick Green. PS: my dad was a steam lover too and had one of his photographs (front-on view of an A3 at Waverley) featured on the cover of The Railway Magazine in the late 1930s. His favourite locos were the original unrebuilt Royal Scots of his youth but he told me that, when clean, both the blue and red streamlined Coronations looked wonderful at speed. Keep up the good work!
@SamsTrains5 күн бұрын

The LNER Wartime black looks really great on the A1/A3, but I think it would be better if Hornby released a weathered variant instead of it being clean. However, my favorite variant of the A3 is still the initial preservation Scotsman, in LNER Green with the red nameplate. However, i don’t think this is the most recent hornby A3. When they released the Dublo Scotsman’s, they slightly changed the scale to make it a bit smaller, which I guess is more accurate to OO. Also, they added a 21 pin decoder and I think spring loaded contacts on the baseplate, as the dublo Scotsman’s had spring loaded contacts. However, great video as always Sam! Keep up the good work!

This reminds me of a visit to the NRM when Scotsman was being overhauled there. Being a lot younger then, I didn’t know about the LNER wartime livery. I stood on the observation platform, and looked down upon it with befuddlement. Given how the media commonly depicts it in LNER green, I was baffled as to why it didn’t have smoke detectors, was numbered 103, and bore only ‘N.E’ on its tender.

Overall I do like this model, though the hard wired base, lack of flywheel, and eight pin socket is weird. While that ROP is delusional, I am completely ok with companies properly updating tooling rather than having to start from scratch, especially if it means seeing certain models re-released. While that firebox flicker looks good, I don't know why there's such variance in how noticeable that feature is with Hornby. It's not a big deal admittedly but I've got four Hornby locos with firebox flicker. On three of my models, you can barely tell the feature exists. On the fourth model, the firebox doors are a portal straight to the sun. Just some middle ground is all i'm asking for. Great review as usual! Would have actually been nice to see this Black A3 running a fast freight service!

As a consumer I do feel somewhat agreeved when more simple liveries are charged the same price as more complex liveried items. This for me this would be part of the reason for lack of sales. Especially at RRP. It may not be a huge difference in price but some reflection in the rrp may have helped sales as faces with same price for lined green vs all black, I’m going with the lined livery as better “value”. But at half price that’s a bargain and a half, so as you say if it results in these bargains I’m not so adverse.

One other thing: the dome is a separate part. I know this because when mine arrived the dome was rattling around loose in the box. It had been fitted the wrong way round - the pin holding it to the boiler is offset - and I had to make the decision whether to re-fit it back to front or to live with a nasty glue mark right on top of the boiler. I ended up fitting it back to front so that the glue mark would be covered - so now it sits slightly forward of where it should be, making my A3 very rare! You'd have to look pretty closely to notice, to be honest.

As a lad of 12 or 13, my first and only OO steam locomotive was a Triang "Princess" class pacific. This was about 60 years ago on a small 4 X 8 layout. All I remember is that it looked great flying around the track with three maroon and cream BR coaches and a royal mail coach. How detailed it was I don't remember, but your look at the A3 brought back memories. Thanks. By the way, is this your only layout or do you have another full scale model railway hidden away somewhere?

Hey Sam. I've got the same model in my collection. Mine doesn't have glue marks on front buffer beam and cab fits the running plate. Though the dome isn't a part of the moulding. So there must be a cross over in the A1/A3 range

I have plenty of black goods locos so gave this one a miss even when I saw it at £125 at TMC. What I'd love is an A3 in the BR experimental purple. I believe in real life seven A3s were painted in that livery but Hornby haven't done one since pre DCC days (St. Frusquin) IMO they're really missing a trick there.

The tender chassis and dcc plug is the same as the Mallard without valance. Hornby still cutting corners but still like to charge an earth for something that is not obviously worth £250+

Oooo, I know this one was recorded a while ago, I was wondering where this one was. It was even in the year recap!

Nice bargain there Sam. It does look sleek in that livery. No way would I be paying anywhere near rrp. I still think Hornby are overpriced and begs the question how they can be discounted so heavily. My last new Hornby loco was the GWR large prairie and I bought that with a fair discount. Cheers.

Hi Sam, as you seem to be a supporter of the smaller manufacturer, I wondering why you haven't reviewed anything from cavalax yet. Would love to see your response, cheers Alan

A quick search will reveal Sam does. I remember him comparing it to the Hornby James. :)

Seeing a British steam engine with eight tender wheels have always boggles my mind since I'm so used to seeing them with only six.

You'd be extra boggled by one of the Southern Railway bogie tenders. The SR had no water troughs (track pans in US-speak) so the locos needed to carry more water.

You can see Lemberg name plate at Danum Museum Doncaster.

I really liked seeing the full-size "Sir Nigel Gresley" in wartime black and was saddened when it was returned to BR Express Blue, but I respect the choice of its preservation society members. To me it was a missed opportunity.
