Once upon a wooden table, a young man named Tat had laid down a single oval of 00 gauge track. The table was one of those that folded up neatly when not in use. The fellow was named Tat to stand for tried and tested. However, there was one thing wrong with the table: the middle part had rotted away completely due to suffering wear and tear from the outside elements. Tat asked his Father, who was a carpenter by trade, if he had something of a sturdy shelf about him. "Here's one I made earlier," Father quoted happily. "This should do the trick." Father and Son carefully fitted the shelf for size. It was several centimetres too long. The middle-aged man took the shelf into his workshop at the back of the house, and sawed it exactly in half. It made for two sturdy suspension bridges. The two halves fitted on either side perfectly. Tat was very grateful. "Thanks, Dad. What would I do without you?" Father winked. "Just be careful when playing with trains," he advised smiling. "Don't want a railway disaster now, do we?" Tat agreed, laughing with the joke. His Father was always joking. One week later, Father and Son were playing trains together. Unfortunately, Tat had forgotten that water and electricity don't mix. He put his water bottle down on the table, and played with trains a bit too fast. "Bother," he sighed. "Should have been more careful." A loud explosion erupted, but nothing sustained damage. Except for the shelf halves, that is. They splintered and snapped in two, leaving a tightrope gap on each side. Not good. Father and Son played trains once more, yet the tight-roped track couldn't take the weight. SNAP! CRASH! The track, sturdy as it usually was, broke. A Tiny Terrier Tank Engine and six coal wagons, plus an LNER Guard's Van, smashed themselves to smithereens on the wooden floorboards. Tat was in tears. "Don't worry," Father assured him. "It was my fault for not reminding you. Accidents happen." The middle-aged man paid all damage fees and was given a refund. Play began anew. That was how Tat liked it.

Nice engine! I do find it amusing that you find value from material and size. While metal castings and size of engine does add to the cost of production, MOST of the cost of an engine comes from how much demand the manufacturer estimates for a model, and the 3d modeling/rendering of the model. So the O scale model, while being larger, shouldnt have a huge price difference than the HO model, since they already have the 3d models, which can just be enlarged and slightly modified. The fact that it is 8x larger doesnt scale as far as price point goes. Its also why Bachmann engines cost is outrageous sometimes, since they didnt expect demand to be as high for certain engines, so they have to raise the price to cover the additional tooling costs. Lastly, it does explain why sometimes, the "streamlined" model with LESS detail costs just as much as the non streamlined engines. Because demand is sometimes lower. Enjoyable video as always!
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I suppose you're right, but the increase in scale here also leads to an increase in detail and number of separately fitted parts... and the evidence for this is all over this model! The amount of assembly involved in this must have been insane, and for the price I thought that was very impressive! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Best thing Dapol did following Dave Jones departure was to get together with Richard Webster. I can't think of anyone better qualified to wash that bad taste out. I'm not as much of an O fan, not enough operational scope offset by the space needed, I'd rather have a decent N roundy than a tiny O shunting plank in the same space, but I've owned Richard Websters models from back in Lionheart Trains days for use on the club layout and they are fantastic. Have a look at Ixion too, every bit as good as Lionheart (Dapol) O gauge. Their Hudswell Clarkes are stunning models, and their Fowler 0-4-0DM is every bit as quirky as this Sentinel. Minerva make some very good O gauge RTR as well, their Peckett is a favourite of mine.

Two things: 1: I must say I really like the Sentinel because of its odd shape - it looks like if someone made a steam loco in Minecraft, but also built it backwards (since the boiler is in the cab, and I used to think what is actually likely a pipe for water to be fed into looked like a chimney). Plus it's a shunter, and steam locos used for shunting often just look really cool. 2: I think the flickering firebox is just a standard thing on Dapol models, as I bought a OO LSWR B4 the other week and it also has an LED firebox. If I had an O-gauge collection and plans for an O-gauge line, then I would totes get this. It's really cool and seems to perform perfectly. 'Tis a shame the Model Rail one sucks (and the Sentinels of this design were LNER and LMS, so I probs wouldn't get one anyway).

Thanks for sharing - haha yeah, I wonder if I could build one in Minecraft? Yeah it is - many have it - but it's a fab feature! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

It jut goes to show that Dapol can produce a really good quality loco at a very reasonable price. The level of detail is superb, along with the mechanism! Why couldn't Dapol produce the same level of deiail and performance with their collaboration with Rails of Sheffield for that "ultimate" Terrier? O gauge locos costing similar to OO gauge locos, that's pretty damn good in my book! Excellent review as always, Sam!

Hi Sam, My brother wanted me to tell you that his package arrived today. It was the Thomas and Friends trackmaster Nia and the Elephant. Best wishes. Oliver p.s Nice Model 👍

Yes it works quite well on his large track around his bedroom.

That's a nice little National Coal Board shunter, not as nice as the Peckett B2 Class National Coal Board by hornby. But still looks like a really good model.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ray, yeah the Peckett is probably nicer... though I'd love to see a Dapol one in O gauge! :O Thanks for watching, Sam :)

0 gauge models are so well detailed. I still think you need to bridge that gap on your 0 gauge layout with a bridge. Are you going to try a Heljan 0 gauge loco next?
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ben - haha yeah maybe you're right! Sure, I'll be trying some Heljan soon! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Out of curiosity, whats that wall with all those pictures at 16:11 for example? I see all those names so I guess it's fanart or other stuff like that? You never mention something like that so is it something from a long time ago?

Yeah that's the wall of fame - you can email pictures to put up! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

It would be nice if Hornby started making o gauge again because the main thing missing from O gauge is Multi units like the Pendolino 390

I agree - I'd love to see what Hornby could do with O gauge! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Every time I watch a O gauge review I fear that the loco will just derail and crash on the double oo gauge layout. Great video

haha I know - I'm hoping that won't happen! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Nice review on the Dapol O Gauge Sentinel! For its size, it’s really impressive! I like the details that it has on this model! I can imagine putting figurines inside the cab due to the size of the interior! Overall, nice ratings you gave to this locomotive even the quality isn’t a 5 star, but everything else is excellent! I’m gonna give this a solid A! Nice review you did today Sam! 😃👍

It’s bigger yes, it’s more expensive yes but it’s way better than the OO gauge module. Now I want Dapol to make a J50 now.

Yeah absolutely - an O gauge J50 would be epic!! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Looks fantastic. Unfortunately wouldn't fit in with my area of modelling (a western region branch line) so I can't really justify one. As I watched this, I'm building a parkaide PS34 GWR diagram G31 12T MOGO van for my 0 gauge setup. Also I acquired a 4th lionheart/dapol tanker today, Berry Wiggins 103, which leaves just number 101 left to get. I highly recommend you get at least one to review (there are quite a few differences between the Class A and Class B tanks).
@lachd22613 жыл бұрын
They do come in GWR and BR livery
@lapiswake65833 жыл бұрын
I can't see any GWR ones, or br(w) ones as i'd want. I see NCB blue, industrial green, lms, lner, br(e) early crest, and br(e) departmental. I will admit that the industrial green one is described as GWR green, but its the wrong shade completely, and theres no GWR branding or cast numberplate.

Thanks Lapis - yeah not sure about the O gauge liveries, but they certainly did in real life! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Kind of an off topic question, Sam, but what do you use for a lavalier microphone? Is it any good and would you recommend it? I'm having numerous issues in regards to audio quality with my camera so I'm, hoping maybe a new mic would solve the problem.

Sure! I use a Rodelink setup - it's perfect, as it just takes care of itself! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have two questions 1. Why do you use different controllers for reviews? Sometimes I see you use the HM2000 and other times I see you use a Gaugemaster controller 2. Can you switch directions with the HM2000 while running a locomotive or will it short out the controller?
@lukeslocomotives3 жыл бұрын
Answer to your second question: Yes you can change the direction when the loco is moving without the hm2000 shorting out
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
I've always used the HM2000 for O gauge, though I will be changing to gaugemaster soon! Yes you can change direction on the fly - there's a small dead zone in the centre position of each switch! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
