Owen Mitchell This is in part why I am reluctant to purchase, I live in France and I'm reluctant to pay nearly £200, by the time I buy a chip and pay the additional shipping charge, for a product which clearly has quality control issues as shipping here is two weeks generally and if I have to send it back it's both expensive and I've lost the loco for at least five weeks.

You are the only KZbinr that keeps me from skipping parts out of the video - absolute quality recording and keeps me interested and entertained at any given moment. Great review as always, though it's a shame more features aren't die-cast, like the running board, pipework, whistles and chimney. If Hornby has some 0-4-0's for £35 that have metal whistles, then I'm sure a model with a value of £115+ should do too! It is always nice to see a flywheel and a 5-pole motor, although this doesn't seem to do any favours for the model! There is definitely something wrong with that model, it shouldn't slow down randomly on curves and hills that much. Maybe the motor was produced for higher speeds? I would be sending that back immediately and leaving a strong review on the website.

Hi Sam, I can’t help as my prairie failed during running in. Forwards after approx 45 minutes it stopped on a set of points. The front pony truck screw had come loose like yous and wedged itself against the point blade. After tightening the screw I tried it in reverse10 minutes later it was lying on its side . One the screw holding the con rod in place had worked loose and derailed the loco. Fortunately my local model shop has an excellent repair guy so hopefully it will come back from him ready to go

Sam, I've had almost the exact same problems with my own Prairie. As soon as the BR Black one was in stock, I jumped to get one, but it has had similar issues. As far as the coupling goes, the coupling appears to have been made specifically for the prairie, so I fitted one from my spare coupling bag and it is fine. Your running problems are far more accentuated than mine, but mine are still there, on a slight incline on my layout it slows far more than my new 40xx Star at the same speed. Eventually it actually broke, when put down on the track it short circuits (no idea why, if anyone has any ideas, please tell me), so I'm sending it back for a replacement. It's a real shame because the looks of the loco are stunning, hope the story helps!

Well, thank goodness you have done a review on this, Sam. I was just waiting for you to do one before I made the move to purchase one of these, and by all accounts, I'm glad I haven't purchased one. This is ridiculous, especially for that price! It's a bit more expensive for the Australian consumer of course like me but you would think for that price you would have all the usual refinements (007 puns there) added to it, like the diecast elements for instance. Well, thank you for a well-informed review, my good friend. I haven't had much luck with tank engines in the past. I had a GWR Pannier tank no. 6424 from Bachmann and that failed along with other tank engines I have got from Hornby as well. Then I have good friends who have lots of GWR tank engines in their collections and they don't have any issues. But then again life ain't that good to me at the best of times lol. At least I can take the piss out of myself though. Makes for some good comedy here and there I must say. Take care and keep well. Cheers Caleb

Sam, you mention the livery of the model does not include the lining, but in fact, when introduced, this class would be painted as shown. In GWR days only the larger passenger classes would be lined out. It was not until BR days, about 1957 that Swindon, unilaterally, introduced the green lined livery for almost any class that could be classed as a passenger locomotive. This included the 43xx moguls, all 2-6-2tank locos both large and small, the 14xx auto tanks, the 56xx 0-6-2t, all the Halls, Granges, and Manors which under BR had been painted black.

Hello Sam , even with the problems that the Hornby does have as you pointed out in this review . I did end up purchasing one and yes it did have a lot of running issues . On the straights on my little layout , no problem . But , as soon as it hit my 3rd radius curves , it would just stop ! Extremely frustrating !! But the weird thing was , that when it was in reverse going on the curves it had no issue . Very odd . So I decided to take off the base plate and have a look , I could not see anything major that was causing any issue , apart from maybe a bit to much grease and a couple of none to tight screws , I went and gave it a bit of a clean , dabbed a bit of ultra light oil on , reassembled and held my breath ! And it has been running perfectly ever since , now I am extremely happy with it . And I agree that these models should run one hell of a lot better out of the box ( I also run Roco and Fleischmann models ,and they are always perfect ) , it was nice that it turned out to be a reasonably simple fix to get the Hornby up and running well . Thank you for your reviews and thoughts , keep up the good work !

The GWR prairie tank locomotives all follow the same design as they were designed by the same designer. There was a small prairie tank and large prairie tank locomotive. the 41xx, 42xx, 52xx tank engine locomotives also used a similar design apart from the wheel layout. Lovely looking tank engines and there is one being restored at the Severn Valley Railway at Bewdley where I volunteer.

This month's Summer edition of Model Rail received today, gave 91% in their review. Loco is R3723 61xx Black Early Emblem. The picture implies that the running plate is straight. No negative comments about the coupling or the 'copper' chimney. The running capabilities were perceived as being OK once pickups were properly attached to the rear wheels. @@SamsTrains no a kink(what youre referring to as a slow down every rotation), is not the same as resistance in the mechanism. Thank for your review, I've just saved GBP 126 + GBP 8 postage just by seeing what is going wrong with this locomotive. Well, for me, I would have accepted the little concessions on the details, and maybe the lack of diecast, if the motor was simply RUNNING PROPERLY. And if the pony truck was not mounted on the locomotive with a ridicule screw that has to be let loose to get the proper thing functionning ! Motor issue on Hornby models is a complete no-go for me when I saw one running badly. I have a S-15 with a motor thats runs when it wants, I had stored it waiting for something to do with it. And it is a constant on ALL Hornby S-15... So, Dapol will have a customer for their large Prairie with me. I never had issues with their motors in the past, sometimes their models are underdetailed and overpriced but, at last, THEY WORKS ! My B4 from them is not extraordinary, but it does the job. Sorry Hornby, with such a botched job, I cannot recommend your product. I am especially boring on the motor issues because I had two models in a row with such unacceptable problems, one from you, one from Oxford Rail. So; when someone have motor problems with an Hornby locomotives, it is a no-go for me. Anyway, does your OR Deans Good still runs ? Also, You did not mention motor or drivetrain issues with your Drummond 700 if I am correctly remembering your test. Same for your 28xx. "I've looked at this loco and there's no glue marks!" Literally two massive marks around the whistle and on the cab window. And regards couplings they are removable, but that's the piece that the NEM coupler fits into, not the coupler itself, normally removable if you don't want a visible NEM Coupler socket. Hi Sam. I got both the 61xx and 51xx from Hornby. I had to send the 61xx back and get a replacement due to many reasons. Hornby said they had nothing from the factory to say there were issues. I ran in my 51xx last weekend when it arrived (I pre-ordered it directly from Hornby) and it seemed perfectly fine. I don't yet have a layout so I can't say how it performs with a load, but the running in was fine; smooth, quiet, and constant. I didn't feel there was an issue. Also, the couplings on mine are fine. I think you have a faulty one, I think Hornby should investigate their production as i agree, the issues you have said shouldn't be there, but I don't have them. Great review though 👍

Hi Sam, Just to inform you regarding my Nightmare with this Chinees made junk. Had it from TMC for a good price. Out of the box on the rolling road was ok. But not on the tracks! Stalling, derailing, jerking. I spend hours and hours to diagnose the problem and then fixing the damn thing. Remove front and rear pony's and run it. Mine did smoother. So address the pony truck: remove paint at swivel point and bevel the contact sides smooth. Put a small strip of iso tape in the screw hole and reassemble taking care to allow plenty of play and getting the screw tight in the hole without fastening. File the round rear top end of the rear bogie for it rubs the housing and lifts the loco. File the strip on the underside lightly and bevel it smooth. Clean every single pickup, bearing and remove the overdone grease from the mechanism. Control side spin of the driving wheels - mine sat stuck because of gunk. Place 0,4 mm shims between the screw holes of keeper/ chassis and reassemble. It should run like a Swiss watch. I've send my Ready To Repair bill to Hornby. It's clear: very poor Hornby engineering - didn't they notice during pre-production ??? QC China = below 0 ! Unacceptable ! Maybe you could to a repair Video about it for so many model railroaders have the same issues with this otherwise beautiful loco. ? All the best, Filip

Sam, I've just taken delivery of a KATO 10-1499: this a N-scale Japanese tourist train pulled by a D51 steam locomotive. Running this for the first time, I am astounded by this tiny model's ability to crawl at a speed, smoothly(!) I find almost imperceptible. But I would've thought that such slow smooth speed would be more difficult for a N-scale loco than a OO/HO model just for how tiny the motor must be. What do you think? I'd also be really interested to hear your opinion on N-scale and KATO in general! I sure do like being able to buy whole prototypical rakes of trains at once by default rather than one vehicle at a time.

Hi Sam - very useful review, as always, but a very generous score, as usual! IMO, if we're buying this model to look at, it's OK, but if we want to play with it (and I know that's why I buy locos) it obviously doesn't work properly, so other considerations are secondary - I don't care if it's the most beautiful object in the galaxy, it's still rubbish. I honestly think "performance" should carry more weight and be at least half the score, because for me everything else is just a bonus - I love the look of it, but there's no way I'm going to buy it - and charging £140 for something with bits that drop off is outrageous - I would have sent it back - and yes, it might be a 'Friday' job, but it is what it is. So, you may have guessed by now that I'm not convinced by the scoring system! But what I AM convinced of, is that you're such a generous guy you'd probably have described Adolf Hitler as "a bit naughty...!' Keep up the good work mate...take care.
@SamsTrains

Hi Sam I've had a dodgy h class erratic run and burning and found the problem was with the dcc board. A small chip on the board was shorting out which with the body on, it gave me smoke from the funnel and cylinders which was quite realistic ( well done Hornby with that one) but obviously not right. I removed the dcc board and hard wired it and bingo runs much better but fear this shorting may have taken its toll on the motor. Hope this helps

@paulroberts9704
@paulroberts9704 4 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains Hi Sam sorry for the delay in replying: yes very erratic fast then slow each time the con rods went one full circle, this seemed to be when new and after running in was much better. But the other problem was the rear bogie was lifting the second of the front driving wheels off the track, so you could see day light under them ,so not much traction. So packed it away till I had time to investigate ( common problem with olive green Southern version ) so when I came to give it a run this was when I noticed the burning as mentioned previously. Since hardwiring there was still a burning ,motor and capacitor/suppressor getting so hot if you left the body on it would easily melt it. So a trip to my local dealer he said to change the capacitor/suppressor and gave me two to try and sure enough it worked only getting warm. Since then I've sorted out the rear bogie and it sits flush with the track and I have traction. She pulled 15 wagons and a Bachmann queen Mary brake van. The only problem seems to be you have to turn the power up to at least 70% and then she still run fairly slowly but it's acceptable maybe gearing. Still at least it's running. Hope this helps with your prairie tank. Oh also got a T9 with mazak rot, got the parts from Peters spares and followed your video. Also had to hardwire this too, and remake nearly every electrical connection on the loco as they were just falling off.7 hours later, now she's running really smoothly and she pulled 50 wagons today with some in reserve. Both locomotives run exceptionally well at very low speeds so I'm happy Thanks for a great channel Sam kind regards Paul 😀

Hi Sam. I'm afraid I must correct your math's. You said that you had increased the controller setting 10% from 40% to 50%, when you actually increased the setting from 40 to 50. That is an increase of 25%, assuming that the setting marks are actually linear, which they may not be. Check the settings against a voltmeter. Anyway I do agree with you that something seems to be wrong with the drive. The loose coupling is really bad, though you could have left it off, fitted the front coupling and, run it bunker first. The loose truck screw is a real problem. If it came out at speed, it could cause a derailment, or worse. A drop of, "plastic safe" thread lock would solve that problem. Well correction and rant over. Another good review from you. I think you are the best reviewer. Certain others I won't name, but you probably know who I mean, do not do such an "in depth" job as you do. Regards, Alan.
@SamsTrains

@@SamsTrains Hi Sam, As you know i returned my example of the Hornby Large Prairie and got a refund, but i have to admit it was a really nice looking locomotive. I watched your review again and we shared the same view on that point too, and like you i thought i may have received a "bad " example. So Yesterday i ordered another, and it arrived today,( Hattons usual good service ) On opening the box and packaging i saw this fine replica of A GWR Large Prairie locomotive. On closer inspection similar faults were there, the screw holding the front pony truck was loose and the front coupling fell off when putting the loco on the track .I don't wish to bore you further, but nothing has changed, it ran in fits stops and starts only alleviated by running the model at warp speed. I think it may have something to do with side play on the driving wheels loosing electrical contact on curves or point work. All my radiuses are 3rd or 4th and all my other locos run perfectly well on them. Anyway it's being returned on Monday and i've asked for a refund. I think I'll be patient and wait for the arrival of the Dapol example !

Hey Sam, most interesting review, I've got the 61XX I've only run it in and not tried any coaches with it. So I put some track down on the dining room table, a small oval 2nd radius curves together with the Gaugemaster controller. Locomotive straight from the box, cold with six coaches behind. I Turned the controller to 40% the locomotive really struggled, it was running left to right and as it neared the right hand curve it almost stopped until it rounded the curve I thought whoa !!!! this is not good. So I turned the controller to 50% and it seemed ok. So then I connected the HM2000 controller, turned the dial to the 4th spot on the controller and the locomotive began to crawl slowly away, I nudged the dial only a gnats whats'it and it was away running great. At 50% it really was full steam ahead. I even added a seventh coach and it was just as happy, all the coaches were new 6 from the Railroad range and the seventh from the main range, so there should not have been any drag at all. So from that I would say this locomotive does not favour the Gaugemaster controllers. I do not know if that helps, I'm not an expert with these things, it's just an observation :) :) :) Thanks again Sam.

Oh, by the way, without waiting for your invite (you were so wrapped up in watching over your model, you had forgotten it), I went engine spotting. The theme is Great Western Tank Engines, and you gave the odd one out away by showing him up close and personal behind the pub: LMS Jimmy the Jinty in BR Lined Black. Not like you to forget the engine spotting part. Yet, you sounded so unhappy I didn't have the heart to scoldingly remind you about it. So, with the Great Western theme, I recognised the 72 and 52xx Tank Engines, I'm sure the 0-6-2 tank engine was there and a Pannier Tank Engine (or was it two, meaning the half-cab Pannier and the 57xx cousin?). I'm sure that's all the tank engines covered. Hang on, the engine on the turntable looks like he might be Oliver's brother. I only got the back of the bunker.

Having bought around 11 locos since starting this hobby at Christmas I find it extremely annoying that 3 don’t work properly even on a rolling road and are fit for display only and another 4 needed tweaks to get them to run well, mainly pickups not actually touching wheels. These cost a lot of money and should be tested by manufacturers before dispatching and work out of the box otherwise they will just lose customers and new people to the hobby will be put off with the frustration

I have just bought a second hand version of this engine and it is struggling as you saw with yours. Did you find a replacement motor for it?

Re- the running problems: When you first got the loco out the box you can see by the wheel treads that it has already done a good bit of running; have been sent a loco that someone else had already returned??

Yes I noticed that too Robin - but they arrived in stock the same day mine was dispatched, so there was no time for that! I've noticed dirty wheels before - it seems to happen quite often! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Just got one in BR livery. Not run in but similar motor performance issues. And one con rod pin fell off on SECOND circuit because the bolt wasn’t correctly tightened ! Seems motor performance issue is general so would really like your views on that Sam as that would enable me to return it without too much argument. Beautiful model though despite slightly bent running plate as you found which must be from poor moulds. Cheers

So sorry to hear that mate - if you suspect a fault, don't hesitate to return it... doesn't sound good :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I'm sure all GWR locos had the brass safety valve - a unique feature along with the copper top chimney. ... Why did Hornby decide to paint this in green ? .... A great review as always.

If it is faulty, it came out this week, so it gives them time to fix any major problems with the loco which is why I'm gonna wait a bit until buying brand new locos
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that - they're all made in one go, you'd have to wait for a re-release of the model if you wanted to wait for them to fix issues! It's no excuse anyway - the reason they have samples is to iron out issues... in this case, the issues clearly weren't addressed (or at least not properly!) Thanks for watching - Sam :)

It's very poor that the loco was supplied with such a loose coupling. You could try a bit of black tack to secure the NEM pocket in a removable way. The pocket is supposed to fail under too much tension so glueing it in to the triangular recess might be a problem if it ever broke.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks James! I got too impatient in the end and superglued it on - brutal, but got the job done! The pocket can still release under tension - the pocket is fine, it's just the socket I've glued! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Yeah strange one that, I once had a Hornby Q6 which had the slowing down speeding up problem, I ended up sending it back to get a new one, but it’s so disappointing when you expect a new model to run perfect. Thanks for the review made me think twice about getting one now cheers Ryan

Oh yeah - my Q6 does that now too - and those are insanely expensive also! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hello Sam I have brought 2 of these so far. The first one the motor burnt out after a few minutes. The second I received today. Ran for around 3 minutes and completely stopped running. Going back and not sure whether to get another. Cheesed off about it. Glad to see it is not just me. Hornby need to sort this out. Disappointing loco after looking so forward to its release.

Engines 4110, 4115, 4121, 4144, 4150, 4156, 4160, 5193 and 5199 ended their days on banking duties on the same shed. All were preserved except 4156 which was scrapped at Barry in 1980. The other engines preserved were 4141, 5164.

I think the problem with the slowing down and speeding up could be the wheels not quartered properly (i think thats what its called, when they arent in the right place)
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a good thought, but if it was the quartering, we'd see issues on each rotation - instead, the slow downs happen every few seconds, which means it can't be that :/ Thanks for watching - Sam :)

mine lasted about a dozen runs now has stopped all together, some problem between contacts and motor as motor is ok but nothing through the wheels. hornby really need to up their game rather than trying out new scales (TT) too much negative comments on latest products. i fear for their future.

Once you pointed it out Sam, my eye kept going to that wonky running plate! Could your example be 'warped' in some way and so jamming up the mechanism as a result? Just a thought. Many thanks as always.

haha yeah - it's quite common with Hornby locos with the plastic running plate! But no, it performs just the same with the body off - it's a heavy metal chassis anyway, so the body wouldn't have much effect on it! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
