14:50 it can run slower than that. Mine is run by a Hornby elite controller and I have coded it to accelerate slowly (100 steps) and it runs perfectly slow even over points. It runs so slow that the noise can’t go that slow so the noise jumps a bit. But I would never run it THAT slow on my layout!

I bought the original railways range Tornado, limited edition R3070 in BR Apple Green. She runs well despite the lack of tender pickups, but twice I've tried to fit TTS to her and twice the chip has blown, so she's plain DCC now. The tender pin isn't quite long enough so sometimes comes loose. The detail is fantastic, but the buffers are plastic on mine, and it was involved in a few derailments on my old layout so 2 of the 4 are cracked. Cost me £70ish plus the chip. Gotta love the colour of that BR Express Passenger Blue one though.

Not really relevant to the video, but I'd like to say this: In the past - you've commented on whistles and safety valves perhaps being hard to make out of metal at smaller sizes. I can confirm there is no reason for ANY whistles or safety valves being made out of plastic. I recently acquired a JNR C11 in N gauge (!) and all the piping and separately fitted parts are nearly all metal. The whistle is TINY but it is 100% metal, it is perfectly shaped and looks absolutely gorgeous. Best model I own. It has a line of pipes along the boiler that are all metal (a gorgeous bronze colour, which using a magnifying glass you can really see just how tiny you can make metal parts. Larger scale models have no reason not to add such detail. It's about the size of a LNER class L1, and cost marginally over £100. Kato's quality and detail are unrivalled. Makes all these models look like toys, what with its cab detail and many separately fitted parts and a great detail pack of various detailed etched number plates that fit snugly into the sockets. I thought I'd bring this up for future reference when you comment on plastic whistles and other fittings. If N gauge parts can be metal, why can't all larger scale parts! Loved the video! -Mikhail

She certainly is splendid. It's easy to see why this model is so phenomenal. Unlike most models in the Railroad range this one had relatively new tooling and would for the most part share much with those in the main range with just enough toning down to lower the cost. With a bit of work from a seasoned modeller; she'd probably top the main range any-day. In terms of raw power few would ever need more than this. I've got to admit though; I can't even remember if Hornby actually did one in this livery for the main range. If so I certainly can't find any images.

For those that would like one of these locos, but only have a DC layout, and you are not worried about having the sound functions. All you need to do is unplug the decoder and add a blanking pin. It does defeat the purpose of having a TTS loco, but if you wish to have a cheap Tornado for a DC layout then that is all you need to do. As for the loco with it lacking the detail of the main range it is still an impressive runner with the extra picks ups and motor (3x pole) for a bargain budget model.

I think the railroad range is one of the best idea Hornby had. they managed it brilliantly : decent price, good quality, nice looking models. On this one, the only real drawback I can see is the 3 poles motor. Enven the couplings are NEM ones, far from the ugly and painfull to replace car-bumper style. Well, the TTS sound is a plus if you like it, I recognize it. And GBP 115 for a Pacific, it's a bargain. On the continental side, for a SNCF model in HO, minus the nice looking 030 from Jouef, you have to spend from the equivalent of GBP 225 up to GBP 500 to have a DC model, and no one cares to make an equivalent of the Railroad range for continental models, except some isolated Roco or Piko models... Well, there is some can-buy in the railroad range for the modeller. I think this A1 is one of them. No possibility to program the CV29 to allow it to run on DC ? That would be surprising...
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I agree Oliver - it is a wonderful range (mostly, when the prices are reasonable!). Yes the 3 pole motor is a shame, but no complains on performance with this one! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I chose the "Railroad" Loco! That could actually be a 3 pole, SKEW Wound Motor!! (They do exist) The low speed control is phenomenal. Could do even better, adjusting CV 2, 3 and 4.... Yeah Mate, the paint is a bit basic, and the Cab a bit sparse... BUT at that price, I'd BUY it, and add Details. (I'm the Railroad Modeler NERD!!) 😜 It's a fantastic starting point, at the RIGHT Price! Carmine ✈🚂🚙

I looked at the TTS manual. The decoders do not support VC2, but they do have other CVs for motor control. Do you mean CVs 2, 6 and 5? Low, Mid and Max.
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks4 жыл бұрын
@@Poliss95 I did initially mean CV 2 - Start Voltage. I realize that some of the low line Sound Decoders don't support a lot of fine tuning.... Bachmann's "Sound Value" Decoders are the same. Although some of the earlier SV Decoders were Soundtraxx, and supported many more CVs.

@Sam. If you do accidentally cut yourself make sure you only do it when you're opening the box of an LMS loco. That way it won't spoil the red livery on the loco. :-)

Great value for money Sam. I have a Bachmann Tornado it doesn’t have tender pickups either, like the non railroad Hornby. I’ve added some myself & now she runs over points, pretty poor considering it’s supposed to be a “better” model🤔 Great vid 👍 Cheers John B

Hi Sam, an off topic question for you. Its not very often I can run to buying a brand new locomotive but I paid a pre order deposit to a well known model railway shop. The locomotive had not yet been released. How long would you expect to wait in this case. I have been in touch with the shop and they say the loco is due to reach the UK soon, that was three months ago. I paid the deposit to secure a locomotive 1 year and 3 months ago, is this the kind of wait you can expect ? Many thanks......Mike.

Great video Sam once again! You have a Tornado collection! I have this one aswell but without TTS sound! It's a superb loco :) Cheers, Luca

I managed to pick up a Hornby Merchant Navy (Holland-Afrika) with TTS sound for about £95. As it is not a railroad loco and has sound I consider it the best bargain loco in my collection!

Lovely model is the railroad Tornado. I've still got my model, minus DCC fittings but I'd still not give it up for the world. If only you could still get them for £79 like you could back in 2011.

Good Lord.. this model of "Tornado" is impressive! I have 2 DCC-equiped ON30 Locomotives, which run incredibly good as well! (To be fair, I don't run them on DCC, as I don't have a DCC Controller.)

Well who needs 'tender pickups' at the points? You need momentum, like the Tram drivers in Frankfurt/Germany did until few years ago. Just excellaration and then momentum and you are "over the point".
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha yes I suppose so - but you can't beat the reliability of tender pickups, particularly on DCC! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

You need to play around with a CVs which stands for control variables because you're not getting six chuffs per wheel turn

Excellent review of this amazing Hornby Railroad TTS Sound Tornado Sam 👍👍 I have to say I'm impressed that the model does have fantastic basic details as well fantastic sounds from the real Tornado. I'm also glad that this model have cab windows unlike your other Hornby Railroad non-TTS Sound Tornado (BR Blue version) which doesn't have any windows on it cab.

The numbering and BR lettering are accurate to when Tornado wore that livery and the boiler white bands do seem to be accurate from the pictures I have seen

DID YOU KNOW!?: A1 Tornado holds the record for being the fastest preserved steam locomotive in the world, at 101.6 mph. The record was originally held by bittern at 91mph, she broke her own record the year after that I think. It's amazing how 50 years steam has ended, but they still are going at high speed. I wonder what would happen if every preservation group started competing to have the fastest preserved steam locomotive in the world!

This is a fantastic looking model, one thing I noticed though as I was watching is that the rear wheels don't seem to touch the track very well. I noticed it in particular when you were backing up to the coaches, around 19:09 in the video. There is a visible gap between the track and the rear wheels. Also, during some of the crawls, the rear wheels would randomly stop moving or never move at all (most noticeable around 15:50-16:17). It isn't too noticeable once you get up to speed though. Either way, great video as always, and a very nice model! *Edited to fix timestamps
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right - the wheels are like that by design, in order to handle tight curves! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
