An absolute stunning locomotive the detail, the sheer pulling power, the reasonable price, Great job Bachmann. The 94xx is one of my favourite locomotives by the late era GWR superintendent Hawksworth. More to the point the 94xx was the first locomotive I bought (though produced by Lima models) which also makes it my favourite. Great review Sam. Certainly worth the money

Congratulations to Bachmann on the attention to detail they've achieved on this loco Sam. They were a common sight working the Cardiff Valleys in the early sixties. However, I still can't understand, why in this day and age, that they still can't produce a decent reliable motor. These locos are not purchased to be put on static show by most people. Very nice review Sam, these locos have a special place in my family because my dad and I voluteer at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and it was on a 94xx that my dad passed his fireman test and the engine that he passed it on was 9466 which was the one you showed in a clip at the beginning of the video and the one you rode on the South Devon Railway because 9466 used to belong to a man called Dennis at the Buckinghamshire railways centre but he sadly died a few years ago and it was sold so these locomotive have a place in my family and heart. @@SamsTrains Well, when I went to Warley on Sunday, I noticed that the Locomotion Models version was being sold for £120, so I picked one up. I'm very happy with my purchase. It ticks all of the right boxes: finely-detailed, crisply-decorated, smooth-running, and (unlike some of Bachmann's older releases) built to last! I have no complaints about the current RRP of £134.95: it's a lot of money, but you're getting what you pay for. And the discounted price of £120 represents very good value! Well done, Bachmann.

Amazing review on the Bachmann 94xx! This model looks fantastic with the amount of detail it has for a new locomotive along with the weight of this thing! It’s unfortunate that the glue marks let this model down, but other than that, he’s a smart looking locomotive! I’ll give this one a B.

My Locomotion-exclusive 9400 arrived yesterday on my Stateside doorstep. To borrow a phrase from your side of the pond: I'm gobsmacked. This model is exceptionally good so far! It looks incredible. Mine luckily has no obvious glue marks or wonky parts (shame B-mann's inconsistent QC bit you, they really, really need to work on that). The 9400 runs well on a loop of test track. I'll need to chip it before I can run it at my club, but so far it's looking like a winner in performance as well as looks.

Nice to see Bachmann going up in the world with their steam locos as they have more than proved they know how to make a good diesel. A bit of quality control could have really done wonders for this as it might've actually been hot on the heels of their impressive 37. @@SamsTrains Yeah, all the wheels were flanged and didn't move much side to side and maybe were at the limits of gauge so on a curve it would jam enough to sometimes stop it. As a result I couldn't run it on my store display which I was running Bachmann's On30 on 18 inch radius. If I could find an O gauge 3-rail example I might actually by one for my Christmas level (providing it could handle O-27 curves). Cheers, Dan.

Hey Sam! I recently just got back into the hobby and thought I’d get a little advice. I own a Jinty with the electrical pickup coming from the center axle. It tends to stall on turnouts if it drops below 30 on my controller. My turnouts have insulated frogs, just for the record. Since this Pannier has all wheel pickups, would that mean it can go through any turnout (insulated or non insulated) at slow speeds without stalling? I’d like to run a consist at more realistic speeds but my Jinty can only do so when it’s not going over turnouts. Hope to hear from you soon. Love your videos! Take care, mate!

I'm really impressed with Bachmann recently. This model is fantastic, and the RRP is good too! Especially when you put it next to much smaller tank engines, like the Hattons P Class, or Hornby Peckett. Do you think Bachmann might be starting to get the hint on price? :P

I always admired the design of the pannier tanks since they were designed to haul heavier loads of freight and passenger trains on the branchline services. What's the difference between this design and the earlier design of pannier tanks?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Me too Kenneth - admirable designs indeed! This was just the latest iteration of the design - presumably it was designed to be that much more efficient and powerful!" Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Lovely! I have to say that one of the reasons my layout is British and not Swedish is that even a basic Märklin loco is way more expensive than any top line Bachmann or Hornby 😜

I would LOVE to see a Picture in Picture of the controller when you are doing the slow speed tests. When it’s crawling we’re left to guess what you’re doing to the controls. Did it stop because you tried slowing it down or is it an engine problem. Know what I mean? Thx!

Hi Sam. I do love the 94xx class and so I was eager to see if it lived up to my hopes. And it does seem to from what you have said. Shame about the glitches but as you say, they aren’t major ones that you can’t put right yourself. 🙂 I wanted to get a BR outline one to pull some coal wagons and I was annoyed a bit about the gearing, but in fairness it seems to pull perfectly well anyway, so I think I might take a punt 🤔 Or at least I will do...I am on a self-imposed embargo in the meantime until we have moved house! 😄 Cheers mate, have a good week! 🍀

Do any OO gauge models feature moving valve gear and connecting rods? I remember about a decade ago they experimented with moving valve gear in a top-end 1880s HO scale U.S. locomotive, and people were complaining it jammed up too easily. 24:18 You ask "What model railways have prototypical gradients and curves?" My answer: Mine will, assuming I'm able to make one. Nothing more than a 1:80 gradient or less than a 5th radius curve on the main line, or 1:40 and 3rd radius on branch lines. All said, it's a great model, just one tier below the Class 37 and MR 1P. Great review as always!
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Not to my knowledge Steven, at least not between the frames. I've only ever seen that done in O gauge so far! Wow - that's very impressive - definitely not very common to see that though! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Always liked the 9400. This one looks really good. I had a Lima one all plastic with a horrible mecanism though it didn't look too bad once well weathered. I think it's still packed away with the rest of my stuff and badly in need of a good replacement chassis. I also found an ancient Graham Farish all metal one on ebay shortly before we moved house (in 2013 😳🙄) and the layout was dismantled. As far as I remember, it looks good and is heavy but no idea what it runs like. As for the quality of assembly of the Bachmann one I guess they're manufactured in China by fairly low paid workers. I can't imagine the ladies in Margate letting stuff like that pass back in the day but that's progress for you and also why the price is reasonable. The guard iron sticking into points probably doesn't mean they don't test them before packing, it just means they only get tested on plain track so maybe there's a suggestion for Bachmann to put sets of points in the factory test tracks! I must admit over £100 for a loco still seems an awful lot but that's a sign I'm just getting old...
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Robin! All the best getting yours dug out - hopefully it'll be still running okay! Yes that's a good point on the guard irons actually! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I bought the br black one of this 94XX with sound fitted as I struggled to find a 8 pin decoder to fit my other pannier 87XX due to space. However i dont think it would of been a issue with this loco, also i didn’t realise it had firebox glow till i was playing with the function buttons, so please with this model from bachmann great slow runner which is great for my layout which is mainly a shunting layout.

If you are going to plan a Q&A or something similar, then I got a nice question for you Sam: What is the most fragile locomotive you ever had? Or similar: What train had the most fragile parts on it were the parts broke off the easyest? Also just a regular question for you Sam: Do Bachmann and Hornby produce their locomotives in China too? Because piko does. Its of course cheaper to make then assembeling it in England. It's a big shame that it doesn't happen nowaday's...

Just one thing Sam. Most impressive to look at. With that small motor and high gearing, has it enough power for the wheels to slip if the loco is prevented from moving, ie too heavy train or possibly stuck at the buffers?

That's because Duck was based on the GWR 5700 class, the 9400 was the final evolution of that family of GWR panniers.

Enjoyed this review. Although several people in the Model Railways facebook group have reported the same tight spot on the driving wheels. One is particularly bad, and the owner has sent it back. On a separate note, do you plan to review the new Rapido 16xx Pannier? You wait 30 odd years for decent new pannier tooling and 2 come at once! Would love to see a side-by-side.
