Very helpful. The process itself is super easy and I probably couldve done it myself, but having someone there to guide me step by step took a lot of anxiety off my back 👍

In other cloning software we nee to initialize the ssd first. I but i see that nobody does that with samsung magician. Isn't it necessary ? Please I need help and don't know if I have to initianalize it first.

How do you clone a (d) drive used for games? Not the os c drive. Edit nm got it. You format the new drive, name it E, copy and paste all files from D to E, shutdown, remove D drive, put new E drive in, then rename to D. Done

Question: I'm cloning my drive right now to the new m.2 drive currently installed in the second m.2 slot, in my Dell G16 laptop that has 2 m.2 drive slots. Is there any reason why I need to physically swap the cloned drive back to the original c drive location? Why can't I just assign the new m.2 drive as the O/S drive in the bios on startup? Is that not an option on startup? Or is it ill advised to run the OS on the second slot for some reason? Thanks, I'm a computer amateur. Love your videos and you are my first go-to for any computer related stuff!

Ok, clone was successful and both drives show the OS on it, Drive 0 is OS (C) and new drive 1 OS (D). The Samsung Magician software seems to have not removed the data on old drive even though it said it was going to. So same question as above, I think I can just format the C drive right now in disk management and wipe it clean, and run the OS on D, and saving me from opening up the laptop again? I could even change the drive letters in disk management if I want to keep "C" as the drive letter? Seems like a no brainer to me...?

When you clone the drive it never removes the old drives data. Most people keep the old drive as a backup. You don’t need to move the drive to the primary slots on most modern computers as they are usually 2 x gen 4 slots these days. Only reason I swap them over on the blade is because I remove the original 1tb drive and put in 2x 4tb drives. Hope this makes sense

it is simply a case of opening a couple of file explorer windows, make yourself a relevant folder structure on the new drive where you want to store the old drives contents (ie pictures, documents, videos etc) or just use the default windows users folders then copy the files from the old drive to the new one. There is no easy way to automate it I am afraid

According to Samsung Technical Support, in order to use the Samsung Cloning Software, BOTH the source drive and the target drive need to be Samsung drives. My problem is that the source drive in my computer is a Toshiba SSD drive.

Bought a 990 pro to replace the WD drive in my Dell G16 laptop. Cloning seemed to go well using Samsung Magician but the drive wasnt bootable. Ended up just using it as addtional storage rather than the OS drive which was a bit of a letdown.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the Samsung software really only works well with Samsung drives. I know there's other programs (Acronis??) that will essentially do the exact thing, regardless of drive brand.

sadly not always, windows is much better at it these days but you may need to muck around and get a few new drivers for the new board

Bought a new prebuilt a few days ago and spent those days installing apps, perfecting settings etc. Decided I wanted to replace the low end Kingston that came with it, with a new 990 Pro. So I used Samsung Magician to clone the drive (installed the 990 firmware first). Everything appeared to work great I was thrilled at how easy it was. I removed the Kingston, put the 990 in it's place and the pc booted up perfectly, with the 990 (obviously) showing as the C drive. To me everything was perfect and exactly the same. But out of nowhere, Windows explorer will begin to not load the Desktop folder, Downloads folder, it won't even show 'This PC'...it says "Working on it". Sometimes before it refuses to show anything at all the files that are there have no thumbnails just basic outlines of a stock file. If I reboot everything is back to normal. But the issue eventually returns. The files are there, if I open a media player I can play them, but sometimes when this is happening the thumbnails don't even show in the media player. The whole thing is bizarre, it's one of those issues that is extremely hard to troubleshoot because nothing comes up when searching the web. Do I have a bad drive? A bad migration? I just don't get it. And I wish I had that enclosure you have because it took me a long time to complete this entire process because I had to remove multiple components from the desktop since m2 slots can be such a pain to access with the practically impossible to handle tiny screws. I don't even know what to do at this point. Do the entire process over again? Exchange the 990 for a new one and try again? I ran diagnostics on it in Magician and there weren't errors so it's hard to believe it's a bad drive. I'm ready to put the crappy Kingston back in.
@mashextra7 ай бұрын
and did you update the drive firmware in magician software? can you put the SSD in a different m.2 slot to test? I have used the clone tool probably 50 times and so far never had an issue

you said you only have to put the drive in once i dont know to much but when i got the samsung 990 pro i just put my main drive in my second m.2 slot and put the new drive into the first m.2 slot the pc still booted up and i was able to clone my drive and that was it
@mashextra4 ай бұрын
that is true but then you usually have to open the PC again to remove/replace the original 1tb or did you just keep that as a spare? I usually add 2 4tb SSDs as I need a lot of data which is why I do the clone externally
@marcus050119934 ай бұрын
oh yeah that makes sense if your doing that but yeah I had a 1tb 980 and got the 990 1tb so I just put the 990 in the main slot the 980 in the second m.2 slot booted up cloned and that was it but I did end up taking out the 980 after I cloned it to double check and make sure it cloned it correctly and that it would boot up on the 990 and once it did I put it back in

@@mashextra Well, guess what? I followed the directions with the enclosure and formatted the SSD. Then when I tried to use Acronis, the software wouldn't recognize the SSD. So, it wouldn't work. I don't imagine there's any way to reverse the format? I'll probably have to buy some software. Seems like everyone has their fingers in your wallet these days.
