In high contrast scenes/situations you have to underexpose the shot before capturing in order to pull out more information from highlights and shadows.

It's just because it's not what Apple does with their cameras, so lemmings are used to thinking that anything that deviates from Apple is objectively "bad" because it's different.

Try to take pictures from 8k video and you get 33 mp pictures. If you take pictures while you recording you get only 9mp. If you wanna get best result use pro mode for 8k video. You can even turn off Auto fps and video stabilization for better result and you will get more dslr looking images. If you use regular auto mode for 8k it's more over exposed and over processed look

The blown out highlights in the night image are because you've set shutter speed to high in camera assistant. Basically all of your photos have been sub par in quality (as far as the phone's capabilities go) because you had that setting on. It makes a huge difference and this kind of makes your entire video pointless. Also, if you want better 200 mp photos then set capture speed to "faster post processing" for higher resolutions

I totally agreed with you on the overexposure. I didn't realize that I often tune down the exposure when I take photo with S23U. However, I see a lot of users prefer to have slightly overexposed image especially the darker part of the image. People take it as high HDR but it makes the image too flat to my taste.

As the photographer, it's up to YOU to make the image. The camera can't read your mind and just magically know that you want a specific part of the scene exposed a certain way or that you want a specific shutter speed. Claiming something is a "problem" just because it's not what you envisioned in your mind (while also not adjusting the settings yourself or using the appropriate mode) seems misleading to me. I'm not saying this as a Samsung fanboy, but as someone with over a decade of photography/videography experience that understands that the camera is just a tool. Also for future reference, when you want to capture a fast moving subject....use the Burst mode.

Camera assistant is great to hear about I'll have to check it out. Yes, the shutter isn't "lagging" the camera has simply assessed the lighting situation and set a slow shutter to let more light in, just like when you use night mode and the phone asks you to hold the camera still until it's done so it can get a proper exposure. This can be bypassed as well by using the pro camera mode but sometimes I find that I can't get as good color and exposure settings as i do if I just let the regular camera use ai (I'm still on S20FE) On a side, it's interesting that you found many of your shots coming "washed out" straight from camera. Samsung has always been known for their vibrancy but maybe they are trying to market harder to photographers and took notes of the popular cinestyle way of shooting/editing seeing as though the images edit nicely which means that all the information is present My theory about the over exposure is simply competition with the apple look. Iphone ai really likes to flatten out exposure by brightening shadows and it has a discernable look geared towards the general user who isn't a photographer

A comment on your zooming in of the storefront in 50 mega.pixel mode at 3 times crop. What the phone does is upscale the image back to 50 megapixels which it obviously is using software to do. Even if you zoom in four times it will still up scale to 50 megapixels which is not ideal. The same is true when you shoot and zoom in in 200 megapixel mode. I think it would be better to shoot with no zoom and then just crop post to avoid the post-processing. Because the upscaling is not really doing a great job

That's a nice and honest review. The phone is great, the best of course the almost unbelievable zoom range, especially until 30x the pics are quite usable which is insane. Pro mode, especially compared to older phones, is losing its relevance since you're losing all important software gimmicks like HDR or multi pic stacking instead of just simple long time exposure. What I'm missing, not only with Samsung phones, is using auto modes but with some constant adjustments to your liking. Companies try to make the look of pics fitting to everyone's liking and every situation, one click shoot - but this will never work, never. Buying such an expensive phone I don't want the 'company knows best what's good for me approach' (rather arrogance). I want options, but of course not by doing everything by myself but to change auto mode to my(!) liking. Why is there no option slider to adjust HDR shadow brightening or HDR high light reducing in general?. Why no option slider to adjust color to something individual between insta popup colors and pure cool color DSLR aesthetics in general? Older Samsung at least had a sports mode for shorter shutter speed priority. It's gone! Why? No cam app in the world in auto mode can read my mind, e.g. if I want to take a pic of a little river with water flow smoothed out or crystal sharp. I understand they had to deliver a one-shoot auto experience as most customers are inexperienced, but doing so they are frustrating everyone who knows about foto technology. Why do you have to adjust your light room color scheme afterward? Why aren't we able to do so just out of the cam app itself directly when saving the pics file. It seem all these cam app developers were no photographers at all.

Question: I noticed other KZbinrs images come out flat as well. My initial reaction was "Perfect! Like a raw photo I'll have more latitude to work with when I go to Lightroom." Then I realized the avg consumer wouldn't like flat curves on their final pics. 1) Does this "flatness" preserve detail in a similar way that a raw does; 2) Does the flatness depend on defaulted outputed file format?; 3) Do you think this is intentional by Samsung??

So all this editing stuff requires Lightroom am I right? They seem to have a monthly plan only. What a ripoff, like 13 euros a month. That is so expensive and inconvenient for a casual photo snapper. They should have one fixed price to buy the damn thing for life, like it used to be in the old days. Now, everything seems to be subscription based. That amounts to hundreds over the years, not fair. Hopefully there is a pirated version, or a decent cheaper alternative.

Now we have the Camera assistant, and I'm not sure why they couldn't keep all the settings in one app. Nonetheless, it was a nice video with cool presets, and I appreciate that you're an actual photographer. As an average user, I can say that the additional settings and flat images, as well as the challenge of taking close-up pictures of nature, such as flowers and leaves due to the presence of wind, may give mixed impressions of the S23U.

I still have a Note 20 Ultra and have NONE of the problems that S23U gives. The ONLY modes that dont put tiny vertical lines horizontally across pix are 200 and 50M. AL the other modes have really bad issue with lines. WTF dis Sam do to there cams on basic settings out of the box. ,NO way I should need an app to help with pix, that all come out A or A- on my N20U. I will def be taking this phone back unless some miracle happen. Day & night pix all show these lines except in 200 & 50M as stated. Even the Full mode and I use it a lot for doc scanning at work. Wow, super disappointed in S23U cam. Only when I manually used night mode on some shots did it help a little. Glad you have a good experience but.... just incredibly sad that Sam shit on their own cam system. Will be keeping my N20U as long as possible.

When are folks going to learn that changing focal lengths DOES NOT change perspective. Selecting a longer lens does NOT compress an image. This fiction has been promulgated by so many folks for so long that it is really annoying. The affect that you are speaking about is due to the fact that you have changed the position of the camera. Your comment about compression the image defies the laws of physics. Light essentially travels in straight lines and to do what you a claiming, a lens would have to in some way change the path of light. Do this simple experiment. Find a location with objects with a range of depths. Take three images wide, normal and telephoto WITHOUT CHANGING your shooting location. Now select the telephoto image. Now select the normal image and crop the image such that it has exactly the same image as the telephoto shot. Now do the same with the wide angle shot. View them together and you will find that the three images are essentially identical. No compression, no major differences. Resolution between the images may be different. There may be a few small differences due to the different geometry of the lenses, However you should see no differences in composition. Now promise me that you'll never talk about longer lenses compressing the image again. Cheers Peter

Thank you for your video. There are no "problems", but misunderstanding of luck of knowledge about the cameras in this phone. For example, 3x camera will give you more image noise because the aperture is 2.2, instead 1.7 (main camera), so therefore it has to raise ISO in order to make correct exposure. Higher ISO -> more noise. All cameras in this phone have different apertures. In the case of the photo from 13:30min in the video, you overexposed the image (dark front ground) so therefore you got severely washed out background. With correct exposure (making front darker and then lifted in post) you will get much better final image.

Which one should i buy if I am considering the two of them?
@JustinDufrene
@JustinDufrene Жыл бұрын
Personally I'd buy the pixel. My reasons for that: 1) Better camera (for my taste...more true to life photos with great hdr and a lot of detail, able to capture moving objects much better) 2) Voice dictation is unmatched. If you use voice to text a lot, it's hands down the best. 3) smoother and more fluid UI 4) the phone app features: call screening, Hold for Me and Direct My Call. These features are amazing.

I love my S23 Ultra, but it has one but very important cons - shutter lag! I hardly can understand why Samsung continue doing it for years... Why iPhone has correct algorithms of shutter work and can easily do great photos of moving subjects? I don't think that Samsung can't solve this problem but it is a big question why they don't do it yet...

You can adjust shutter lag in camera setting. There is option to take a picture immediately when you touch the button not when you realize it...

Great video👍🏼 I really like all your mobile camera review videos. If its possible can you make a camera review video of Base Samsung Galaxy S23. Will love to see that video. As I am planning to buy it and its in my budget and i also love taking pictures from my mobile, when I'm not carrying my Fujifilm x100v. And If not..then it's totally fine..as I know how much these videos take time to make and post. Keep making these awesome video. Love from India 🇮🇳

Um... shutter speed in auto is determined by light conditions. You literally complain about it and then show the solution. Which is shoot in manual / Pro mode. Almost any camera would have similar "issues" in auto in those lighting conditions with fast moving subjects.
@rogerhitchner6962
@rogerhitchner6962 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Multiple combinations of shutter speed and ISO can achieve the same exposure. This phone prioritizes low ISO, resulting in slower shutter speeds but theoretically less noise, but at the risk of blurred motion

Hi, I'm just watching your videos now and they are awesome. I am torn between the S23 Ultra and the Google Pixel 7 Pro. I want the best camera phone as I do a lot of hiking and travelling. I have watched many reviews, and I am so confused. If you could pick one, which one would you choose? I know that is a loaded question, but I'm going crazy lol.

If you're just using the phone for point-and -shoot photos and not messing around with advanced settings then go for the Pixel. If you are really into photography and are comfortable adjusting the pro settings then go with the S23 Ultra.

How's this camera compare to the pixel 7 pro from your perspective?
@azvisuals
@azvisuals Жыл бұрын
They are very different it is hard to compare. For point and shoot I think pixel is still better because it is able to freeze motion more than the s23u. However from a hardware and pro perspective the samsung def wins due to having pro mode and expert raw, in addition to the 200mp to work with
