SAMSUNG QN90D VS QN85D. Best Samsung For You!

Bought both the QN85D and QN90D for our living room and bedroom, respectively. I see the same thing in this video that we noticed at home: the QN85D actually has richer colors in some cases. Just look at the difference between the blue in the water and sky in your own comparison. The blue and all primary colors look substantially better on the QN85D. Of course, this is just out of the box, but after calibration, this difference becomes even more apparent a lot of the time. We actually prefer the color production of the QN85D, and after some research, I think this boils down to the fact that it has a far better native contrast ratio than the QN90D. The QN85D also has a more natural cinematic image quality, very reminiscent of plasma TVs. We like the image quality so much that we decided to use the QN85D as our main set and the QN90D as the bedroom set. Both have phenomenal black levels, and I cannot really tell a difference between the two unless I'm watching stress-testing demos on KZbin. Even then, they look about the same. The QN90D can definitely get brighter, but this is not important to me because both are brighter than you'll ever really need. I wish you would do some basic calibration for your videos, Brian, because you absolutely did not bring out the best in the QN85D or show its true capabilities. Gamma runs way too low out of the box and absolutely needs to be set to -3 to match the QN90D. If you made this one simple change, you would see a dramatic difference in the comparison between the two. Basically, you have to level the playing field before it's a true comparison, but I understand you're trying to represent what most people will do, which is simply take it out of the box and leave it there. Both are phenomenal TVs. My recommendation would be to go with the QN85D unless you need atypical amounts of peak brightness for a very bright room.

Just finished watching rest of vid. The Qn85D looked totally washed out and not really close in game mode. I’m movie mode with high quality it’s a lot closer… but B…. You have GOT to start showing SDR and low quality picture performance on these comparisons. You should compare the QN90 to TCL QM8. I saw a review where the TCL QM8 actually outperformed the QN90 in controlling blooming and brightness. The QN90 strength was in the upscaling.

Damn, the only copy I have of that movie is on DVD, BUT it still looks good enough on my Z9K. It looked like caca on my old 65 825 TCL but at least the audio always sounded excellent.

Just bought the QN85D in 75" for the bonus room. Great tv for the price point. 1599.99 Costco. Mini-LED is the way to go for sure. Big jump in quality from lower priced TVs and I felt you needed to spend well over 2000$ to feel like you are getting to the next level of visual quality (bright OLED) Saving $200 from the 90D vs 85D was worth it

Great comparison, thank you, I watched it several times! I actually noticed you loose some details in qn90d because of that brightness, but maybe it's just my monitor. As you said, if you look ant qn85d alone - it looks great, but if you put it side by side with qn90d, it looks dimmer. BUT I tried to stop the scenes and look for the differences in details.For example 6:22 - look at the umbrella - Qn90d is white on the left, whereas qn85d has detail. The same is with the top of the umbrella. And later on you can stop the ruins at 6:26 and look how 90d looses detail compared to 85d because of that brightness. Every time there are clouds in the picture, you can stop and see more detail in 85d. I don't know how this looks in real life, but I could see that difference on my monitor. And I also caught one scene where 85d blacks won. Look at 11:52 and 85d has black background whereas 90d didn't catch up that fast and had some gray all around. I believe 85ds bigger contrast ratio compensates that lower number of dimming zones sometimes and wins the comparison between the two. I'm not saying 85d is overall better than 90d, but it can be better at some times.

​@@Staudtenwell I own 55 inch qn85d for a month now. Bought it not long after this video was released. I haven't calibrated the colours, but played with the settings. I settled on a filmmaker mode with some aditional changes and all I can say it's a whole new and superb tv after that. The default settings pale in comparison.

QN90D don't have good calibration by default. rtings gave the default calibration a 6.7 score. after calibration 9.4. they gave QN85D default 8.7 and 9.5 after calibration.

The pictures are relatively close between the two. But the 90D offers a bunch of features the qn85d doesn’t. Things like sound related processors, power etc. 🎉

Qn85 turns white into blue. I don't know why? Maybe it needs calibration. But in my opinion, qn85 has darker black, on qn90 black a little bit brighter but qn90 display white perfectly white

Cant decide between this or S90D. Concerns are blooming on QN90Dor burn in on S90D. Also i noticed judder on S90D in store. How does the QN90D handle this?

I can say on my S90C I notice a bit of jutter, but it’s not a deal breaker to me. And burn in can only really become an issue if watching CNN 8+ hours a day or using as a monitor. These modern OLEDs have improved drastically with preventing burn in. Id go QN90D if watching sports in bright rooms, but for every other use case I’d go s90d, it’s just so good and I have no regrets with my s90c.

I have a 65" QN90D its an impressive set, the blooming is very minimal (almost none), crazy bright, excellent contrast, great viewing angles, Excellent HDR and SDR. I chose the QN90D over the S90D because in SDR the S90D is very dim, I still use my outdoor antenna, also I watch at full brightness in both Dynamic & Movie mode. I know regardless the brightness on the S90D will diminish over time because its on OLED and my viewing habits. I also have a 55" QN90C great TV but does have blooming especially in all the edges and corners of that TV, it really annoys me but its in a bedroom now. I hope this helps. 🙂

You can go in to the clarity settings on the 90C and adjust motion to your preference. I think Classy Calibration said you can unlock extra brightness on the 90C. Ping him over at Classy Calibrations and ask.

Great vid! You can really see the differences. 85d for grandmas viewing habits and the 90d for everyone else? Jk both look great, but the 90d really draws the eyes esp gaming. Would love to see the improved g4 in a vid. It got a huge upgrade. Rting 8.0 to 8.5 upscaling/sharpness and brighter color. Suddely its essentially hits most of their hdr color benchmarks right on where before they were not so close to thier minimal value for good hdr except whites.

This video kind of surmises what I have seen in person. The QN85D looks a bit washed out compared to the QN90D and the likes of the U8N and QM8. Still solid and you can grab an 85 inch for a song via Samsung EPP.

This is simply because for whatever reason out of the box gamma runs extremely low on the QN85D. It must be set at -3 In order to match the QN90D out of the box.

@@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY You didn't perform any calibrations at all-not even adjusting the gamma, which is absolutely critical for a fair comparison. As I mentioned, I own both the QN90D and QN85D, and the QN85D's gamma runs significantly low out of the box. Setting it to -2 aligns it with the QN90D’s default gamma, and this one simple adjustment makes a dramatic difference. Without it, your comparison is inherently flawed. Many of us, myself included, have pointed out that the QN85D can deliver better picture quality, and I have to believe someone in your position understands the importance of native contrast ratio. Rerun the comparison making one simple change, -2 gamma on the QN85D and stock gamma on the qn90D.

@armylrs2391 i actually won't do that. The TV'S are what they are for the average consumer. I can make each look however I like, but that doesn't help the people buying. I spent the time to show each preset to give each TV a chance. Lowering gamma and settings of that nature isn't the intent of the manufacturer. If i pump one up or down over the other, then that is a flawed comparison.

Samsung EPP deals has the 85" QN90D for around $500 more than the QN1XD (QN85D). I've read about the QN85D having much better native contrast ratio, better PQ EOTF, and better color gamut. Is the QN90D still worth the premium in spite of the QN85D being stronger in those areas? I watch a lot of TV while it's still light outside in a south facing room with bright windows, which seems to be a strength of the QN90D.

What's your thoughts about qn90c 65 inch with VA panel versus qn90d? Consider that currently, the QN90C is priced close to the QN85D, even slightly cheaper. (In Europe and asia version, qn90c has a VA panel in 55-inch and 65-inch models)
