Just put a 512 GB SSD on my i7 w/ 16Gb RAM PC (under Windows 8.1) and it boots now for 15 seconds only! Just before I moved to an SSD my old drive was spinning like forever even after loading up the Windows. Now after a full and fresh installation it is lightning fast - 15 seconds for a cold-start boot-up!

I just installed the Samsung 840 EVO 120GB last night. It is my first SSD and my god where has this thing been all my life. Ran some benchmark tests. My old hard drive had a Sequentail read of 26MB/s and Write at 68MB/s Random Read IOPS 198 and Write at 267. After i installed the SSD my Sequentail Read is now 4311 and Write is 3535. Random read IOPS is 105,800 and Random Write is 65903. Windows 8.1 now boots in less than 10 seconds. :O This is with the rapid mode turned on (It is off by default). It came with cloning software and moving all my OS over to the new drive was super easy. It was well worth the $79 from amazon.

I found out my PC is slow because of the harddrive when i opened up Task manager and started opening apps. My CPU was on 15% and my HDD on 100%. With an SSD my 2013 i7 laptop is a beast!! :)
@davidnofsinger34274 жыл бұрын
Usually when you have that low CPU usage/high hard drive usage, you will almost always find that your ram usage is also high (like 85% on up). This is because you're maxing out the ram, and so the computer is compensating by writing the excess to the cache file on the hard drive (your ram will always have a "buffer" that will keep it from absolute max of 100%). If you see this, you'll probably still benefit significantly from a RAM upgrade, because RAM is still A LOT faster than the SSD you installed. Once prices drop again after COVID 19, you might want to check that out.

Guys don't migrate your data like guy on this video if your system had set IDE mode in BIOS, if u had set AHCI everythings good. Or just change it to AHCI and make clean install other way u will get BSOD. And of course YOUR SSD WILL BE FASTER IN AHCI.
@zuan618874649 жыл бұрын
+RaZziaN1 Thanks
@miyu40438 жыл бұрын
+RaZziaN1 No need for clean install. You get a BSOD because Windows doesn't automatically load the AHCI-Drivers during boot, if your SATA-Controller was running in IDE-Mode before. But you can tell Windows to load the driver with a simple change in the registry: If you want to change from IDE- to AHCI-Mode simply open regedit, go to "Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci", doubleclick on the entry "Start" and change the value to 0. After that reboot into your BIOS and change your SATA-Controller to AHCI-Mode. Your Windows will boot up normally, automatically re-detect your SATA-Controller and drives, reboot again and everything will work just fine ... or even better because AHCI-Mode is faster :)

it's only got 1-2,000,000 hours MTBF, wear leveling software built in. i defragged mine a couple times before i heard about this. these drives are meant to write 100GB a day for umpteen years, if you have 30GB data and 5% fragmentation, i doubt a defrag will shorten it's life much. defrag daily, another story...i have purchased 3 more SSDs in the last month to install in other computers, and will buy even more. my 3rd gen i-5 desktop boots win 7 pro 64 bit in less than 10 seconds, linux mint is even faster (dual boot).

SSDs don't need to be defragmented. Doing so shortens the lifespan of an SSD.

yes, you can use sata 3 drives in sata 2 without any other implications than that read/write will be bottlenecked at 200~250mb/s. note that 500mb/s drives can still be useful since slower drives might only have 20mb/s read for 4k files. The only two SSDs I can vouch for are Crucial M4 and Adata SX900(I have also used SP900, which is much(!!) slower for non sequential reads/writes) Everyone please look for benchmarks on many several options before buying an SSD.

One thing to note is that most laptops use sata 2, which would bottleneck most SSDs at around 200~250mb/s. Having a faster SSD in a sata 2 config is however still useful since the speed for small files will be increased significantly. Also, sata 3 drives can be used with sata 2 connectors, it only means that they might hold more performance than you'll get with it in sata 2. There is also no config to make it work in sata 2, just connect and it'll work. (even with sata 1 probably)

I just purchased Dell XPS 8700 SE with 2TB drive and 32gig SSD. I plan to used it for music recording/production, Photoshop Premiere Pro (HD video editing) and Photoshop. I would like to install a 250G SSD drive and use the 2TB hard drive for storage. Dell will ship the reboot cd. Questions - 1) Can I install the boot cd onto the SSD ? 2) which drive do I install the above programs to?

Sandisk ultra plus is also a good buy at the moment, performance is about on par with this drive and it should last a lot longer.

Im still blown away that you even own a laptop that takes long long to fully load. My patience is non existent, any longer than 20 seconds in today's tech world is absurd.

You guys are so lucky there in the states and western Europe because firstly you have access and diversity and BIG competition between sellers and because there are REAL deals. In my country, for example for a mid tier gfx card we have to pay like 40 dollars ,hell I've seen even 90-ish $ more compared to amazon founds, and when there are deals going on(usually 2-3 percent, u rarely see like 20%off), the prices are the old prices cause they rise them before the deals are on.

it was on sale for under $160, but i returned the laptop i was going to install it into. Instead I ordered a Sager with the same ssd in it already. Way better choice. The performance is amazine.

I have a question about what you did at 2:30 and what was the point of activating new simple volume? Also at 4:05 how did you know there was a problem with the boot of the ssd, and how you know it is even working?

the new 850 pro drives come in a flat packed box without the usb adaptor or 3.5" tray adaptor, thankfully I got one of the usb cables with one my samsung 830s so can use that. Upgrading my main rig from an 830 to 850 pro and he 830 will go in my windows 10 testing rig which is dirt slow using a 5400 rpm hdd :) like the author of this video I put a samsung ssd in it about 18 months ago (a samsung 830) and its a huge upgrade from a 5400 rpm hdd.

The comparison should be of New Hard drive VS New SSD Drive. You have used old HDD and new SSD which is little bit not justifiable with HDD. But what-ever SSD drive is faster i agree on this.

It took a long time because I had to use USB 2.0 to CLONE my old drive which was 193 GB. A fresh install will go much faster or if you have external SATA port the clone process will be way quicker too.

I can't wait for when SSDs are standard in all PCs. They really are fantastic.

Thinking about getting an SSD, but are there any compability issues I should know about?

I got sick of my 5400 RPM slow HDD on my Acer TravelMate 5720 last year so the solution was to get an SSD. The old hard drive had 120 GB and the SSD has 128 GB which isn't too bad. I also upgraded my RAM from 2 to 4 GB. SSDs for old laptops with useless hard drives makes a real difference. For a desktop though (which I have), I would still recommend at least a 7200 RPM hard drive, maintaining it properly to maintain it's performance.

Yes, Its actually called cloning and the Samsung software does it. You can get the software if you have a Samsung SSD from the link under this video.

Will SSDs like the Samsung you reviewed here work with older SATA II or even SATA I interfaces? If they do, will the performance improvements still be enough to justify using them?
