Samsung Tab S8 Ultra - Why THIS IS your next computer!

The Samsung Tab S8 Ultra has so much potential. But is it being misunderstood? As I use the Tab S8 Ultra more and more I get to discover how powerful this is. Using Samsung Dex and multitasking, the Tab S8 Ultra is allowing me to run many of my workflows. Whilst being a great device for consuming content too! Is it better than the Microsoft Surface Pro, or the Apple M1 iPad Pro? Well, I am not sure it is trying to do any of those things!

In general I agree. But for the apps I care about the most, they’re actually on par. Mostly are just productivity and work related apps really. I do wish there was a way of sharing data between them sometimes (iOS and Android) so we don’t have to buy multiple or pay for subscriptions twice. But that’s a niche problem I guess as most people will have one or the other.

I actually like the keyboard-cover for the S8 Ultra. If you intend to carry the tablet around and use it otsude the stationary stand, or have other things to keep in mind, like pet cats, for example - I feel like being able to cover the screen with a hard surface is very important. What the keyboard cover offers on top of this is the ability to have a mouse-keayboard everywhere, even if you don't have the main wireless KB+M setup with you. It is at the very least a safety net in terms of functionality, even if you don't use the built-in keyboard as the main input device. One thing that makes me hesitate when considering a tablet like the S8 (or even the iPad) as a desktop replacement is longevity. I have a desktop PC and I spend a lot of time on it each day. And at least twice a week, I edit and render videos that are about two hours long. Since tablets lack a fan or the more advanced cooling technologies desktops and laptops do, they probably can't withstand heavy-duty use over the long haul.

I spent years buying and replacing computers and laptops with the best setups to find it was completely unnecessary. I use three devices for work/productivity. A spec'd out desktop for heavy lifting, an e-ink writer tablet to take handwritten notes, and now the Tab 8 Ultra as a portable laptop for meetings, events, and light work in between. Loving it. I love mine. The keyboard case is awesome and awful at the same time though. It's backlit with awesome key action, but it's so large and thin that it gets awkward to use it anywhere but on a large flat surface, like a table. It does work great to pop the keyboard off and play Xbox games on it. The screen is freaking beautiful on it.

This is the reason why I went with the smallest table. The tab s8 is the perfect size for a tablet. I got the Logitech keyboard and mouse if I want a computer feel with dex. I also got the Samsung keyboard case if I want to do something different. If I need a bigger screen I could connect the tablet to any bigger monitor. Samsung nailed it with this year tablet. I have no complaints.

For average users like myself, who comprise 90% of all users, a tablet is enough. Essentials for average users are social media apps, KZbin, email, MS Office, internet, netflix, and spotify. All of which are available on a tablet. That said, a tablet can already replace a laptop for most users. I have totally ditched PC’s and laptops for years now. Only been using my iPad. I switched from an iPhone to the S22 Ultra. I am considering the S8 Ultra to replace my iPad.

For the same price as that tablet, I'd get myself an S22 or S22+ and a NexDock 360 lapdock. If I really want a tablet with that size, Android won't be my choice. I'll definitely go Windows with Microsoft Surface Pro 8.

It’s a fair option for Dex I suppose. I do like the aspect ratio of this display (for media consumption/light gaming) for everything else the iPad Pro is just as good to be fair

Great for both gaming and media consumption, I did a few videos about it - check the iPad playlist - but just be aware of the selection of games. The tab s8 is more immersive and indoors with no sunlight involved is a delight too

Nah this won't replace a laptop or even a surface pro for me since it doesn't run on windows OS. There are still a lot of windows apps that are not yet available in android.

It is true. Windows is obviously much more capable. Think what I'm trying to say here is that for a lot of simpler workloads this will definitely negate the need for a laptop. It still has some way to go from a software perspective but is definitely going in the right direction, especially with Dex. For instance, since getting this tablet I only really use my Windows virtual machine when I need to use Microsoft Visio. I'm excited to see how this develops!

I love creating these videos and try to keep my bias in check 😊 I’m genuinely impressed by this device, and it’s hard to replace certain apple ecosystem features altogether without completely ditching every apple product but man this device is a delight to use. Do you like the apps in Chrome are the more like mobile or desktop like to use a a replacement laptop on travel and download docs can you do pdf ?

I use Acrobat for PDFs so haven't tried the Chrome app for that. But in general, the chrome apps feel a bit "laggy" which is the best way I can explain. They will do the job when nothing else is available, but I like using the Android native stuff. For me, it's 90% Microsoft Office apps when I use Dex, and note taking/standard apps like GMail, Spotify, KZbin, Netflix, etc. when I am not using Dex.

I don't get what all the fuss is about with these totally unergonomic tablets. Personally I can't stand using them. People buy them then buy peripherals to make work like laptops but end up with a weaker operating system, slower hardware, less storage and a smaller screen with a price tag of a better laptop. Once you add the peripherals its about the same weight as a more capable laptop but more hassle to carry around and set up. Thin powerful laptops are the way to go. Tablets should be left to children to watch cartoons and teenagers to watch porn.

The display is lovely to use, I don’t get any eye strain. It has plenty of different configurations that you can change to suit your preference in terms of color profiles and brightness

I have the same feeling about this device. iPad Pro 12.9 is a really great tablet and fits very well into the Apple ecosystem (I own MB and iPhone, AirPods, Apple TV, and Homepods minis) but I always felt like it was a waste of money for me since I'm not in a creative industry. I'm sure illustrators, photographers, videographers and such take all the money spent on the iPad Pro 12.9 back from how much work they actually do on that device, but for me - I always felt like I spent so much money, and all I use it for is to watch videos and sometimes as a 2nd screen and note-taking, basically same stuff as I might do on iPad 9 for 4 times less cost. I got this S8 Ultra with the intention to try and honestly with prejudice that it will be a much worse experience compared to iPad Pro 12.9 considering how am I used to apple products. But surprisingly, even though it is definitely not as polished as iPadOS, and there are annoying things here and there, overall it is much more useful for my use cases than iPad Pro was. I utilize it much more and even though I spent practically the same money as on iPad Pro I have no that weird guilt anymore.

You absolute nailed it on the head!! I love my iPad too but I barely get to use it’s incredible power. I do use Lightroom on it sometimes and some light photo editing, but mostly it’s watching content and taking notes like you. Not many apps out there that can actually take advantage of all this processing power. I was probably unfair to Apple because the app developers have to develop apps that make the most of it, but I think Apple could do better with their own software like Final Cut Pro for video editing or Logic Pro for music creators. Instead we get LumaFusion which is ok but nowhere near as capable and Garage band or whatever. Literally stuff that we could do back in 2012 😂 Anyway..I live in hope that we will get to use the iPad with a second screen and one day get decent pro apps for it 🙏🏼

Excellent review, well presented about the S8. FYI: It is beyond me why KZbin content creators think it cool or necessary playing music over their voice. Quickly the background music becomes very annoying. Understand, many folks have some form of hearing difficulties, the music makes it more difficult for them to hear and understand the presenter. Okay, they can turn up the sound, doing that also increases the music as well. Many folks I know, when they hear background music, they stop the video and move on.

I’m an apple guy 99% of the time.. apple is simply more stable and more reliable for everyday use. Samsungs android tablet is great for gaming use, and for PS Remote play. Other than gaming android is unreliable and quite honestly stupid. I’d never buy an android ever if I wasn’t a gamer. I have Samsung galaxy tab S8 Ultra is GREAT for gaming use.. iPad Pro is the best tablet for everyday non gaming use. (Although iPads are quite capable of gaming too, but I own the S8 Ultra because of its massive size being better for PS Remote Play..

Great video! Is it my imagination or did you show Dex running on an ultrawide monitor? I tried previously on the Tab S7+ and everything was stretched because the resolution wasn't natively supported. Has that changed with a recent update?

Yes it works great in my Ultrawide! There’s a setting now to enable the monitors native resolution. This is such a cool feature, I will never understand why apple doesn’t allow it on iPads…

The biggest problem is that after a few years, Samsung will stop supporting it with any kind of updates, making it a massive security risk. At least with a laptop, you know it will be good for several more years than that ever will be.

There's no way this replaces any PC...all the features you highlighted are typical tablet features. "Updating antivirus" lol...dude windows defender has eliminated the need for anti-virus and malware for the past 8 years at least. Hope your not paying for that crap. the tablet costs 1200 euro with 250gb and 6gb ram without the possibility of extending the storage and the ram, plus the cost of the keyboard that goes with it, now you can have for 1300 euro a laptop with an rtx 3060+i5 12th gen +16 gb ram, all in a small chassis, so people want to make samsung richer than it already is go ahead , buy this product , a tablet should not exceed 500 euros regardless of its use, since it will never have the potential and the usefulness of a laptop .

Hi Rob! I agree with you in some aspects. The keyboard cover is definitely overpriced, like Apple's but the Magic Keyboard is just much better. I refuse to pay that much for the Samsung one. I actually discussed that in my latest video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4rQYa2IdrZ4Y9k. There are definitely better options. And it can replace certain workflows as I've done it myself. All my office type apps and basic note taking like Evernote, Notion, etc. is done on this tablet. I only reach for my Windows VM if I need Microsoft Visio but as soon as I can use something like draw . io (which I am trying to learn) I will get rid of that VM. The only thing that is left that I can't do on any tablets is my video editing but even my photo editing is 100% doable on this tablet so it can definitely replace some laptops in my view.

I came from the Tab S7, and it was capable enough to replace most of the stuff I do with my laptop. For the past year that I've been using it, I only use my laptop if I wanted a big screen. I might switch to the Tab S8 Ultra soon.

i only use my laptop for complex office document. creating and editing office document was super easy on pc with no glitch issues like on mobile version.other than that email calendar calculator notes,games and zoom calls was pretty much all I do on TabS

@@AlexGTech future android must run atleast full desktop version of microsoft office. its the only thing that stopping it from being a laptop replacement. tho i wanted the s8ultra i went with s8plus. i was originally waiting for s8 ultra 256gb 5g unlocked but it seems like they will never release a 256gb 5g unlocked of it. all they have for all tabSline was 128gb locked with carriers. 128gb is too small for me even if theres sd card slot cause apps are getting bigger and bigger and not all apps are moveable on sd card

Pretty decent camera at the back but really depends on the conditions. For recreational purposes I’d say it’s good enough, but if you are using for professional work or high quality social media stuff then a smartphone will be better

Any Bluetooth keyboard will work. I use a Logitech one. Virtual classroom software should work too, but of course it will depend on the app itself. I use Zoom for work without issues

Thats a pretty nice setup, I am currently using a Galaxy Tab S7 FE and I use an aluminum Magnetic stand made by Lululook, plus a wireless backlit keyboard that came with a 3rd party case. If you get a chance try launching DeX using your keyboard (Fn + Start + W) and see if it works for you. Keep up the good work on the reviews.

And thanks for the tip on the decks shortcut I’ll give that a go. To be honest Dex launches automatically when I connect to an external monitor so that’s been pretty neat.

@@AlexGTech I have been watching a few different videos and checking out the variety of stands. For my use the one I found was perfect. I have used dex casting to a tv but not to a monitor yet. Primarily I use it on the device screen mounted on the stand with the keyboard.... usually for media consumption or quick Photoshop edits on the fly.

I agree. I have a 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro and I love its display and performance, but you can never realise its full potential due to the limitations of iPad OS. I want to run emulators and virtual machines on my iPad, but Apple's compartmentalized view of the computing world frustrates every step you take. Universal control isn't about improving workflow, but rather encouraging you to buy both an iPad and a MacBook so you can realise the workflow and use cases that you can already achieve on a single device running Windows, Linux, etc.

I actually think this device is too compromised. Why didm't Samsung go all out and make it much more practical with a few simple additions? - 3.5 mm jack - another usb c port - let notification light - wireless charging - anti reflective coating - a bit thicker chassis that would fit some cooling tech. It is ridiculous that this Snapdragon Gen 1 throttles much more than it does in some phones, despite being put in a huge tablet.

I do agree on the ports, given this size and how much it’s capable of (and the fact there aren’t many nice USB-C stands for it) another port would be great. Also agree on the cooling issue but haven’t come across any issues (yet). With the other points I think it’s gonna come down to each person, for me they don’t make too much of a difference.

Transferring data, pix, file's to the Tab S8 Ultra 512gig from a 750 gig Microsoft windows laptop, would it be best just to transfer to a 1TB SD card in the Tab rather than try and guess, pick and choose what will fit to the internal storage?? Also, will all windows folders transfer on to a SD Card??✌️

But 2nd hand iPads up to 12.9 ipad pros are so abundant and resale value are high and almost always sold in a week! 🤯 Even in stores in malls, there are so many people in apple product distributors but in Samsung there are very few...and many people comes out of store of powermac who bought apple products. Samsung is more of a niche here. People prefer Xiaomi here. Weird, 4 years ago, Samsung is preferred over all other android brands. I hipe Samsung reconsiders their pricing and make their tablets have high mac brightness because it's unbearably dim in brightroom where I'll use tablet most of the time. Samsung dex is nice but there are tru touch screen laptops with better specs and also OLED with higher brightness

It isn't next computer, this tablet cant replace surface pro, surface x, and can't replace Apple MacBook Pro, becouse it is mobile applications. Android donnt have professional full desktop application from Adobe and from Microsoft. This tablet don't have software for normal design UX UI , don't have developers software , IDE, for developing and compiling apps. You cant working with special professional software. This tablet for not creating content and programs, this tablet for looking TV, Vodeos, and for simple working in mobile Office Applications... Thats all good tablet - not for working. Fantastic video my friend! Really really high production quality!! I had an S7+ that I loved BUT there was no autocorrect when typing using the keyboard.. frankly, that made it unusable for my professional workflow. Can you confirm if there is a functional auto correct when using a keyboard (possibly a Bluetooth keyboard) - if so it would be a viable option to replace my laptop!
