I agree with you in that. I actually found myself saluting him halfway through the video; he must have been among those who died because he adhered to the Captain's Code to go down with his ship. I wish he could have been reunited with his love as well

Definitely deserved a better fate... I don’t think Bellamy was anti-establishment so much as being against the rich getting richer... Definitely the nicest pirate discussed so far... Where a lot of pirate captains would’ve held all the power, Bellamy decided to go with a democratic style of leadership....

All pirate crews were a democracy. Any captain could be voted out. It's just Bellamy was a chill dude 10/10 roommate who everyone liked. So yea he would never get voted out.

Mine too! Did an ancestry dive and found that a little over 100 years ago there was a split in the Bellamy family where one brother changed the spelling to "Bellomy." I come from that line.

Found out when I was little that Sam is actually a distant relative. Bellamy was in my family's name right up until my Grandma. Her maiden name was Bellamy. And she is also a genealogist

Mad Pyer Could be an uncle or cousin. Like I said, my grandma is member of the Ontario genealogical society, and has been awarded federally for her job in that field. She can trace our family tree to the 1700’s Related to and descendants of are two different things

I've always loved pirates. Much like other history "criminals" much is made up and exaggerated. (Especially with they're sexual assaults of women). From what I've learned is alot of pirates had pay per plunder equal amounts and a fairly democratic system eventually. Such a sad thing to hear each time. Reminds me of a white beard and Rodger from one piece just a lad from poverty trying to make a life loving they're crew and having a family. I hope the familial descendents have they're love one found some day

I love pirate history, but I don't allow myself to fall into delusion. Pirates were all vile. Black Sam was not a good man and was not a Robin Hood figure as he advertised himself to be. The real legend of Robin Hood is he reclaimed stolen money rather than steal. He stole from a corrupt government and returned the money (taxes) back to the people, it's easier to say "stole from the rich, gave to the poor". Nor did he steal from innocent wealthy citizens. Black Sam stole indiscriminately and NEVER helped the poor. He enriched himself and his crew. And, of course, he listened to his crew. He had to or else they'd kill him. Or boot him from the ship, whichever came first. That was normal among pirates. Being a pirate captain was a double edge sword. What really got under my skin was accepting a child to join his crew while the mother begged her son not to go. Granted, that was a naughty boy, but Sam, being a so-called Robin Hood figure could have been noble and refused the boy; 6 months later Sam and the boy are dead. Awesome.

I think Bellamy was from the village of Iddesleigh in Devon, England. My cousin, a Northcote , is the Earl of Iddesleigh and had large landholdings there since 1100. So I could be a very distant relative of Bellamy, now that would be cool.
