This is the best UK brewed lager by far. I agree, it looks and tastes like a German Helles lager.

What amazes me is that John Smith and Sam Smith were brothers who set up two brewery's on the other side of the River in Tadcaster North Yorkshire. John smiths beer is probably the more well known of the two, but how different these two brewers are when brewing beer, John Smith's I wouldn't even wash the dishes in this tasteless horrible swill they call beer, where on the other hand Sam Smith brews fantastic beer lesser known of the two but chalk and cheese between the to.

The family owned both breweries, but when John died the smaller older brewery was left to the nephew Samuel .

Not been in a Smiths pub in years. Since they introduced the no phones, no electronics policy. As good as the beers maybe are and how cheap they are I don't want to be told what I can or can't do while enjoying a pint. Not that I am on my phone loads, but I may want to check the football results and don't want to be marched out of a pub for doing so.

I don't think checking the football results on your phone would be problem. Chatting loudly on it or playing music would be a problem for sure.

Agree. That’s why not many around. Out dated mindset. Some people sit in pubs quietly on a laptop having a pint or soft drink and a sandwich. They would be struck by lightening and burn in hell, in 1 of these dinosaur places. People should not talk loudly or play music of course.

@@steve-bk1qd I have not been in one to find out. Once I heard it was no phones, electronics ect I never went back in one. Not that there are many around me. I understand people want to go for a drink and a chat and TV, no music just chatting. But for me life happens and if my phone should ring or if dare to take it out to look at I don't want to be screamed at and threatened with being chucked out.

I'll have to try this. I used to drink in Sam Smiths pubs in central London years ago, particularly the magnificent "Cittie of Yorke" in High Holborn adjacent to the Inns of Court where I was studying. I mainly drank the superb Old Brewery Bitter which has remained a favourite (when I can find a Sam Smiths pub) over 30 years later. I recall back then the only lager they stocked was their "Alpine Lager" which was really rather horrible.

Bloody good brewery Sam Smiths. Quite a few of their pubs, not that far from me where they took over the Melbourn brewery in Stamford, donkey's years ago. Just a shame they only brew one cask ale these days, good though OBB is.

If I'm in central London by myself I always go to the Chandos, a big pub on St Martin's Lane. It's close to Trafalgar square so good for meeting people and going to the museums and theatres. I've done most of my beer drinking in Austria so I gravitate to this lager and the wheat beer. I enjoy the familiarity of the taste, I've drunk a lot of Helles bier in my time so that probably explains why I go for it. Because its a big busy pub I think you could get away with a bit of filming and phone use particularly in the snugs. The Cheshire Cheese on Fleet St is another London favourite of mine for drinking this beer. It's a pity that my local Samuel Smiths pub is on the A6 so I have to restrain myself to one if I visit.

This looks a really good lager, much better than the UK brewed mass produced lager. These speciality lagers brewed by real ale makers are a good way to drink lager in the UK. I'm in the SW, I've tried Sulis lager from Bath Ales, that was delicious.

I like Sam Smith, only half of the pubs though have cask Bitter on ( only cask they do) Joseph Holt of Manchester better option for me, brew a good range of cask, lagers, stout, good bottle selection, 120 pubs n still reasonably cheap compared to most...Good review Simon🍺

Occasionally go to The Oyster Bar in Manchester which is a Samuel Smith pub and used to be a oyster bar back in the day. Used to love "taddys" - £2 a pint at 5% and would stay there all afternoon. Most recently I have been enjoying the stout.

Over 200 pubs, all owned by the Brewery, Sam Smiths inspect all the pubs at regular times, if it's served poorly they are known for moving the pubs staff on within days. It is a step back in time, but the beer is consistent, people in the pub talking and no idiots swearing across the room. Try the stout next time you visit

This is nice in Sam Smith's pubs, but the price is insane in London: a pint for nearly £8. Their cheapest lager is their alpine lager at £4.90 a pint but it's only 3.4%. I've been driven to drinking half pints so as to not break the bank... or Wetherspoon's!

I’d never buy it their practices are shocking the way they treat landlords and the villages they have pubs in. Massive numbers of their pubs are standing empty. Banning people from using mobile phones and devices in this day and age is just crazy, stopping pubs making money from business customers and the self employed etc. Most of the beer is awful and there’s no choice. The pubs are dead. When the bridge washed away in Tadcaster a few years ago Humphrey Smith refused to have one end of the temporary bridge on his empty land so the locals had a massive detour for months. The guy is an idiot. Pubs forced to pay extortionate prices. Just search KZbin for Sam Smiths pubs and you’ll see a small part of it.

Humphrey has destroyed sam smiths pubs, in tadcaster and york, he's closed down most of his pubs. Only know of 2 that are open now. No phones, no texting your mates, no laptops/tablets, no TVs, cash only. Right now He may as well put a small mustache on and do a monty python silly walk while glorifying the aryan race if you get what i mean. Shame because the head brewer knows what hes doing. They have some good/excellent beers
