I've mainly worked in watercolor before coming to your channel but do use gouache to give my paintings a boost if I need to add white highlights. James Gurney (here on the KZbins) is someone you may want to look into when it comes to gouache painting. I'd consider him a master at this medium (and Casein). I think your painting(s) are excellent and I hope you continue to explore this medium. Also thank you for all the great teaching / lessons in Oil painting and landscapes. They are truly amazing!

I _love_ gouache, the matte finish is gorgeous and it gives me all the qualities of oil paint with none of the faff. Plus you can do hard edge ligne claire or soft romantic washes, or both on the same painting, it's so versatile. I actually started using it for studies for oils and quickly realised I like the studies more than the oils. I think it is very intuitive, most people could get to grips with it after a few tries, it's basically just poster paint like we all used at school, so as long as you are able to make a composition you like and balance the colours in a way you like you'll have no trouble at all.
@SamuelEarpArtist Жыл бұрын
Hey Jake, I totally agree with you. I started using gouache for studies as well. I really liked the results I have been getting with gouache and it is great for quick paintings and trying out composition design ideas and colour studies with investing too much time in it. I’ve been doing a lot more gouache paintings recently 😊

Gouache is cool but I think you should take the next step and instead of Gouache, try Casein. It is one of the more historical painting media used by man, well other than blood, feces, and animal grease mixed with colored dirt🙂 It is all great fun.

I really enjoyed this video. My question is, what is the benefit to using gouache for plein air studies, over acrylic? I'd love to know your thoughts on that.
@SamuelEarpArtist Жыл бұрын
Thank you. You could use either medium for plein air painting. Gouache is probably easier to manage in terms of the clean-up. Both gouache and acrylics will produce different results. I love the vibrant colours and expressive brushwork you can achieve with gouche 😀

I would suggest that instead of regular masking tape for your painting border, use painters (usually blue) tape; it will pull off your paper without damaging it.

Lovely painting :) I love your perspective and colours. I could just hop into your painting and go for a long ride. Awesome ---- I also like how you did the bushes in the foreground and how they become smaller in the background. Looks good :) ------- Would you please explore watercolour at some point? I would like to see what that it looks when you do that. ---Painting with Gouache seems to give a chalky whitish impression, or is that just how it looks on youtube?

Hey Samuel, I have had that problem with the masking tape pulling up some of the paintings surface also. I take the tape and stick to my pant leg and take some of the stickiness away before I stick it to my paintings. Give it a try

Love this! I’ve only just started using Gouache as well and have fallen in love with it! So much cleaner than pastels! Only I seem to be using A LOT of water for rinsing brushes. Not sure if I’m using it correctly. What were the paints you bought? I’m using Art Spectrum Gouache (I’m in Australia) Most Gouache tutorials use the higher end paints -eg Windsor & Newton etc. I’ve now subscribed to your channel. Thank you again for filming this.

Thanks Sam, very nice demo. I paint with acrylics and have been thinking of finishing my acrylic paintings with oils as some artists do. Do you think a Gouache painting could be finished with oils or would the water colour paper be a problem? Cheers!
@marksaint18952 жыл бұрын
Since gouache 'reactivates' (like watercolor does), using oils over gouache would only create a mess as the gouache would reactivate and smear around. Acrylics dry permanently, but gouache isn't stable like that.
@stephenkemp68702 жыл бұрын
@@marksaint1895 I get it now , thanks!
@SpectralViral2 жыл бұрын
Gouache only reactivates with water. Using mineral spirits or mediums over gouache will not reactivate it. Test some swatches to see the reactivation threshold for each liquid art material that you presently have.
@stephenkemp68702 жыл бұрын

The tricky thing about gouache is that the light colours always dry darker than they look when wet and the darks dry lighter than they look when wet. I’m surprised that you were able to go over the dry paint with wet so much without the wet reactivating the dry paint. I wonder if you are using acrylligouache?
@SamuelEarpArtist2 жыл бұрын
I definitely don't think there is any acrylic paint in my gouache as I was able to reuse some old paint that had dried on my palette. Good point about gouache paint 😀
