The price I mentioned in the video was updated (it was changed after I made the video). Official price for the X-E4 is currently 849$! Just wanted to correct that in case you were wondering :) Also, EVF resolution is NOT identical to X100V. It is slightly lower resolution. I had no info about the specs at the time of the unboxing. For me, the flip up/out/down screen is extremely useful for three situations: 1) Low close up shots of (for example) plants/fungi and really anything that would require a close to the ground POV that would otherwise require the photographer to prostrate themselves belly down ...in public! 2) "Shooting from the hip" with the screen flipped out facing up for less intrusive street photography ...and 3) Photography when in a crowd, especially if you are short like I am. Screen flipped out but facing down, so you can hold the camera high up at arm's length and see over the crowd, almost like a periscope. Great review, I bought one of these a year or so ago. Thumbs up

Can we compare this with the xt-30? They're on a similar price range so I'm kinda curious on what's the difference
@Barrrt3 жыл бұрын
But but but that's a really simple answer isn't it? - Sensor and AF wise it's the difference between the X-T3 and X-T4 - Ergonomically it's the difference between the X-T...0 line and the X-E line, minus the focus mode dial I have an X-T30 and I would buy this in order to have a more uncluttered camera design. I love (and crave) the simplicity of the X-E4. But it saddens me that they removed the physical focus mode dial - it makes it less of a 'photographers camera' to me. I would love that the Q menu button would be better integrated than on the X-T30 where the Q button is too large and you press it accidentally. The X-T30 looks like 'old school technology' to me, and the X-E4 looks like 'old school camera'. I do think the X-T30 has a more functional design with the grip and more buttons. It lacks the flip-up screen (although you can tilt it). So I do think the X-E4 is form over function. But form is hugely important to me. I would choose a more beautiful, compacter camera over 'bigger but better' any day, as long as baseline needs such as fast AF and decent sensor are met.
@stephenelliott70713 жыл бұрын
The XT-30 is the better camera in every way and is still very small - unless you're blogging/taking selfies and require a front facing screen. If you want the smallest possible then go for a fixed 23mm f2 lens option with the X-100 V (which is weather-sealed) and pay a lot more. On paper the X-E4 looks smaller, but when you start adding lenses and a grip then the overall size of the camera gets so much bigger anyway, so you might as well go for the better XT-30 IMO. The X-100 V has a fixed lens/body combination so the lens can be made smaller, as an example the 23 f2 is much bigger than the 23 f2 lens built into the X-100 line of cameras.
@Barrrt3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenelliott7071 X-E4 has X-T4 generation sensor and autofocus, so in that way it's objectively better than the X-T30. The rest is up to taste and personal preference, and use cases.
@stephenelliott70713 жыл бұрын
@@Barrrt no it doesn't. The X-T30 has exactly the same sensor and processor as the X-E4 and has been updated recently in firmware, like the X-T3. The X-T30 has a better grip (on the front and back of the camera) better viewfinder, both front and back command dials, an extra dial on the top, built-in flash, has a switch on the front for M/C/S and I'm sure there are other compromises, this was just a few things I could see immediately.
@Barrrt3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenelliott7071 You're right about the sensor! Gosh I didn't know the X-T30 has the same sensor as the X-T4. My camera is better than I knew 😅 I haven't looked up the processor but I'll assume you're right about that too. Thanks for the correction. Also I hadn't noticed the missing front dial. Personally, I might still love the X-E4 over the X-T30 because I love range finder style cameras. But I see them as complementing each other for different scenarios.

View mode and Focus mode can be put into a function buttons. This camera is so easy to use and most important it is light. I use a thumb grip to assist in gripping the camera. I like this camera so much it has replaced my X-Pro2 as my primary camera.
@buzhichun3 жыл бұрын
The clean, flat front certainly looks amazing but I do think it's a bit of a shame they removed the S/C/M switch. Still, a tilt screen is one of the few things I miss on my X-E3. Also those wide strap lugs look niice, and the angular corners remind me a bit of old Canon screwmount rangefinders, or the Nikon F. Fuji really outdid themselves, they keep making more and more beautiful cameras.
@MikeFilancPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I personally like the minimalist design language Fuji has adapted starting with the X100V! I have to admit I like how similar this camera looks to an X100 now only with the added functionality of an interchangeable lens mount. I bought my X100V thinking I’d shoot B-Roll with it for my channel and maybe a little A-Roll from time to time. I have to say after trying it out, the lack of a dedicated headphone jack is frustrating. Also Fujifilm really needs to improve their manual focusing experience to round out the otherwise very tactile and pleasing shooting experience. I don’t think it’s an accident you chose a Samyang lens as your primary video lens over a Fujinon. 🙃
@SamuelStreetlife3 жыл бұрын
Good observation skills :D I do like focusing manual for video. I personally don't mind not having a headphone jack. My X-H1 doesn't have one too and I got so good at reading the audio levels that I never have any issues. But it would be nice to have of course. You can use a USB to headphone jack adapter with the X-E4 though.

You had the same complaint - lack of dedicated button to switch between LCD, EVF, etc - with the X100V as well. I agree, I wish there was a dedicated button like on the XH1. "you can watch kai's video now" HA! Shots fired! From what I am aware of, you have to pay for both grips - I really don't want to pay £140 in total so I can hold my camera better. It's justifiable with my XH1 as I get more power and vertical functionality but this? feels like fuji they are treating ergonomics as a commodity.... then again I can't talk; also own an M6! I think I'm just going to stick with X Trans III Bodies for now and side-grade my XE2 to the XE3 or better yet, X-Pro 2?!
@SamuelStreetlife3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel you. I thought it comes with all X-E4's... But I have now removed the grip and I would say you really only need the thumbrest to make it more comfortable. Feels like a digital leica M with the thumbrest but a little grippier. X-Pro2 or XH1 are so much bigger than the X-E4 I wouldn't compare them. Flip screen and newer sensor would lean me towards the X-E4 (also same AF system as XT4) if I would want a second camera.

Which JPEGs do you prefer more, the X-E4 (Fujifilm) or the Ricoh GR III? Also being both a Fujifilm and Ricoh camera user, which has given you less technical problems? Thank you Samuel for that great review. I was briefly contemplating selling my X100F and X-T2 and getting this one instead. Until I watched your video. I was still rather convinced until you hinted on the missing manual focus switch. Thank you for bringing this up! That officially kills it for me. I'm using it all the time. Would have been easy for Fuji to keep it just as it was on the X-E3 and on basically all other major cameras. I guess it got sacrificed for a sleek design just like even the little "grip bump" which means you always have to use the accessory making it a bit more bulky at the bottom. Two rather sad decisions on an otherwise amazing camera. Kind of bums me out cause I was looking forward to this.

Why haven't Fujifilm got the message yet that their customers want a thumbrest on their cameras? Buying a separate thumbs-up and losing your hotshoe is just a pain. Failing that, they could install a separate attachment point for an optional thumbrest. This doesn't have to be a hotshoe.
@balboa06213 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The camera looks almost unusable without the thumb grip. The pen f has a flat front, too, but the thumb catch is really good. By making the hot shoe thumb grip essential, Fuji made flash photography with this camera impossible. That and Fuji accessories are stupidly overpriced so they just added 100 to 200 bucks to the price of the camera.
@beepboopbeepboop1903 жыл бұрын
exactly. they also got rid of the mcs selector on the front along with the rear dial. i absolutely love my xe3 and was really hoping the xe4 would just add a flip screen with an updated sensor (weather sealing would have been nice) and instead they killed this on functionality and ergonomics. i'm weirdly way more pissed about this than i should be because it's just a camera, but i really had my hopes up. i use that mcs switch constantly, have zero interest in fumbling with the menu to change it, and there aren't enough assignable buttons to map it.
@aj-wn4ps3 жыл бұрын
To be fair I think some people want it as small as possible?
@beepboopbeepboop1903 жыл бұрын
@@aj-wn4ps wouldn't those people go for an xa or xf line though? or a ricoh gr or similar? and i could see that re: ergonomics if those were the only changes. with the removal of the mcs selector and back dial it feels like these decisions were made by people in the company who don't use the cameras and are just trying to further distance the xe series from the xpro series by comparing features on a spreadsheet. instead of making the xpro better they decrease functionality of the xe.
@balboa06213 жыл бұрын
@@aj-wn4ps a small thumb catch wouldn't have added much of anything to the size. As for the front grip, any lens is going to stick out farther than the grip anyway. The lack of front grip was mostly an aesthetic choice--which is fine, it looks good. But there is no excuse for the lack of a rear thumb catch. Again, look at the pen f. Olympus did the flat front rangefinder thing several years ago. They made up for it with a very good thumb catch that is slightly recessed into the body to not impact the overall thickness. I think Fuji did this to sell their massively overpriced accessories.

This is an awesome review ! I’d love to pick your brain on the following… I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body. Right now I’m shooting on an XT3 and an X100V. Love both. I shoot studio portraits and headshots, personal branding photos and the occasional family session. I used to shoot engagements and weddings, but now it’s almost entirely portrait work. I have fallen in love with the rangefinder style of the X100V, and I am eyeing the XPRO 3 and XE4. I’m having a hard time deciding if I should sell my XT3, and get an XPRO 3, keep the XT3 and get an XE4, or just wait and save for the XPRO3 and have three cameras (XT3, XPRO & X100). I’ve also considered the XT4, but I don’t do video, don’t care about IBIS and I just don’t see the upgrade. I like to work very minimalist, and I only have a handful of lenses. I would love your thoughts as to what you would do in my shoes. I think I’m also feeling kind of burnt out and bored and there’s something about the x100 that just makes me want to shoot more, which is why I’m leaning towards the rangefinder minimalism found in the XE4 and XPRO series. I want the camera to get out of my way, and my work is about connection, simplicity and closeness. Even in the studio, I keep one eye open. I am finding myself shooting in studio with the X100! Would you sell the XT3 and get the XPRO, keep it and go XE4, or just wait and save and get the XPRO as a third? I think there is some piece of me that’s just scared of going entirely rangefinder, considering I’m doing studio for portraits… But maybe that’s just a simple learning curve. And if I sell my XT3 I could probably afford to get another lens, although I’m pretty happy with my combination of 23, 35 and 56. If the focus on the XE4 is as good as the XT3, or better, I’m in. Is it really that fast? Is the XE4 comparable to XT3 in terms of IQ, ability to work with strobes and speed?

Watching too many KZbin videos.. I was tempted to buy the X-E4 instead of the X100V … I didn’t like the 27mm lens so I bought the 35/2 .. but now I lost the compactness and it’s a bit narrow… I’m considering selling my xe4 and get the X100V … what do you think?

What's the build quality like Samuel? Is it anywhere near the X100v or is it plasticity and hollow?
@SamuelStreetlife3 жыл бұрын
Funny you ask because I cut out a section where I talked about just that. I cut it out because I changed my mind. First I found the buttons to be cheap and hollow feeling (and the menu and display button feel hollow! They are also super flush to the body which makes them hard to press) but I think I was a little too harsh because I got used to my Leica M 262 and of course the X-E4 feels cheap then! But compared to the X100V I would say it feels pretty much the same. Maybe sliiiightly cheaper feeling with the battery opening and the two buttons on the back.

Hi again Samuel, I'm definitely thinking of getting this camera. That problem you had with the image flipping?!?! on the LCD screen? was that resolved in the end, or is it something it just does?!?! Samuel? and would you say the XE4 body has a fairly robust build to it Samuel?.....Sorry for all the silly questions but thank you again for your help Samuel.

What would you use for food photography and close portraits? Will the pancake 27 cut it?

You can use some sort of bracket to put the microphone to the side. Sony A6600 users have been doing this for a while.

Nice video! That flat front is definitely an interesting design choice. It looks like the grip and thumb rest do not come with the camera in the USA and they are $90 and $70... ouch.

No IBIS geez!! So you want a weather sealed compact camera, with IBIS and good battery life? It’s would be so impractical to give this camera IBIS and have it the same size. Let alone the price point.

Ha. I watched Kai's video just before yours so there you go 😉. Always enjoy your vids. Something you said triggered a flow of thought (also I'm not taking a swipe at anyone nor trying to start a debate - disclaimer over)... I find it funny how we (humans) often need to categorise (primarily for marketing/promotion) things but give those things unapt nomenclature. Some photographers you've interviewed in the past have discussed this too. (It's like many music genres which were invented by the record industry to better market music sales. Steam punk is one which isn't punk but references cyberpunk which is a subcategory of punk, but steampunk still retains punk in the name). Street photography needing people to be a photograph of the street. I understand the genre/style is meant to be a candid document of the human element of the ✌️street✌️ but why call it "street" when it is about the human element and is the artificial street not human element enough? I think people get hung up on it and I don't think it's a problem to document evidence of human presence but absent of actual humans, even if the manmade environment is the evidence (the street) and call it street photography... and keeping in line with popular definition of "street ", and if needing to distinguish it from urban landscape or architectural where the focus could be popularly defined to represent the urban environment itself or architecture as the name suggests, I don't see why documenting/capturing the same environment where the focus is to draw attention the absence of people in a normally bustling environment would also constitute as Street despite not quite fitting the popular purist definition. I guess that was a long-winded way of saying I think it's fine for you (anyone) to take a photo of the street documenting the absence of people or even plain urban environment and still call it Street - COVID/post apocalyptic Street. Maybe we should be calling it something that alludes to the human element if it is a requirement for the style - but I guess urban social documentary photography doesn't market as well. Ok stream of consciousness over.
